Sometimes you can continue a save in a remaster, but there is no universal transfer method: support depends on the exact game, edition, and platform pair. Check the publisher’s compatibility instructions before moving data, back up the original save, and confirm what the remaster actually carries over.
First, identify the kind of transfer the game supports
“Transfer” can mean several different things. A remaster might read the original save directly, offer an in-game import, sync progress through a cross-save feature, or merely detect an old save to grant a bonus. A console’s data-transfer or USB feature moves files within its supported scope; it does not make an incompatible game save usable.
Look up the publisher’s support page for the exact original game and remaster, then check the source and destination platforms, including console generations or PC storefronts. Do not assume that support for one platform pair means support for another.
- Direct compatibility: the remaster can use a save from the original game.
- In-game import: you start a named import process in the remaster; this may carry over only selected data.
- Cloud or cross-save: the game syncs data through a supported account or service, often for specific platform pairs.
- Platform-level transfer: a console copies saved data between systems, but the game must still support that save.
- Save-data bonus: the remaster recognizes a prior save to award a specified item or other bonus, without continuing the old campaign.
Check whether your game supports save transfer
Some remasters reject the original save
Bethesda says that The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered does not support save files from the original Oblivion, so progress cannot be transferred. See Bethesda’s support answer.

Compatible saves may still change during import
CD PROJEKT RED says existing The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt saves work in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered, but skills reset because the skill system was overhauled. A save loading successfully does not guarantee every progression detail will remain unchanged. Check the official Remastered FAQ for the applicable version and territory.
Cross-save can be platform- and account-specific
For Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song Remastered, Square Enix documents cross-save between PS4 and PS5 when both use the same PSN account. Its instructions do not provide save compatibility between other platforms, and trophies do not transfer. The company’s platform-compatibility FAQ gives the supported scope.

A prior-save bonus is not a campaign transfer
Square Enix’s Japanese FAQ for Final Fantasy VII Remake says levels and items from the previous title do not carry over. Instead, the title-screen “SAVE DATA BONUS” feature can recognize specified prior save data and grant listed summon materia bonuses: Leviathan for the listed Remake versions and Ramuh for FF7R EPISODE INTERmission. This is a bonus-data feature, not a way to continue the previous campaign. See Square Enix’s Japanese FAQ.
Back up your original save before starting
Use a backup or cloud method supported by your platform, and keep the original save until you have checked the remaster’s result. Do not delete or overwrite saves unless the game’s official instructions explicitly require it. An upload, download, or copy can affect which version of a save is available, so confirm the source and destination before proceeding.

Follow the game’s stated transfer steps
For Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song Remastered cross-save
- On the source PS4 or PS5, launch the game and choose Cross Save from the title screen.
- Upload the save using the same PSN account you will use on the other console.
- On the destination PS4 or PS5, choose Cross Save from the title screen and download the save.
- Load the intended slot and check the expected checkpoint before removing or replacing the original save.
Square Enix documents this flow for PS4 and PS5. It does not transfer trophies, which must be earned again, and the FAQ does not establish cross-save compatibility with other platforms.
For PS4 saved data moving to PS5
Sony documents three routes for supported PS4 saved data: console-to-console transfer, downloading from cloud storage for PlayStation Plus members, or copying PS4 saves to a USB drive and then to PS5 storage. For the USB route, Sony says the drive must be formatted as FAT or exFAT, not as USB extended storage; not all USB devices work. If the same game already has saved data on the PS5, the USB save can replace it. Sony also says PS5 saved data cannot be copied from a PS5 console to USB. Follow Sony’s current PS4-to-PS5 transfer instructions and PS5 storage guidance.

This is a platform transfer route, not a compatibility guarantee: the remaster still needs to accept the save. A USB drive cannot convert a save format or bypass a game’s restrictions.

After the remaster recognizes or imports the save, load the relevant slot and check the expected character, location, and checkpoint. Then review any progression the publisher says may differ, such as skills or trophies. Keep the source save until you are confident the destination version is correct.
