AirDrop, iCloud Photos, and export to an external drive are alternatives. First confirm the clip is actually ProRes RAW: the Camera app’s ProRes setting records standard ProRes, while ProRes RAW recording uses Final Cut Camera or certain third-party apps.
Copying a file does not guarantee that your computer can play or edit it. Windows playback of ProRes RAW also depends on Apple’s playback component and a compatible application.
Check that the footage is ProRes RAW
“ProRes” and “ProRes RAW” are different formats. Apple’s built-in Camera app can record standard ProRes; that setting alone does not mean a clip is RAW. Check the recording app and the file’s codec before choosing a workflow. Apple says its Final Cut Camera app requires iPhone 17 Pro or later and external storage to record ProRes RAW. Apple’s ProRes guidance and the Final Cut Camera User Guide describe these distinctions.
Apple’s iPhone User Guide says: “On iPhone 17 Pro models and iPhone 18 Pro models, you can record videos in ProRes RAW using applications such as Final Cut Camera to maximize the amount of detail and information captured by the camera system.” This describes recording capability, not a transfer method. Transfer footage directly to a Mac
- Connect the iPhone to the Mac with a suitable USB-C or Lightning cable.
- Open Image Capture on the Mac and select the connected iPhone as the source.
- Choose a destination folder, select the clips, and import them.
- Check that the copied files are present and usable before deleting or offloading the originals from the phone.
Apple identifies Image Capture and a USB-C or Lightning cable as a Mac transfer route. The verification step is a practical safeguard: confirm the destination copy before removing the source. Apple’s transfer instructions.
Transfer footage to a Windows PC
- Connect the iPhone to the PC with a suitable cable and unlock the phone if prompted.
- Use an application compatible with the iPhone’s media and the file type to import the video. Apple does not name one universal Windows importer in its transfer guidance.
- For ProRes RAW or ProRes RAW HQ playback, install Apple ProRes RAW for Windows and open the clip in a compatible application.
- Test the actual file in the intended playback or editing application before relying on it in a project.
Apple ProRes RAW for Windows version 1.3 lists Windows 10 64-bit and enables playback in compatible applications. Apple names Adobe After Effects, Adobe Media Encoder, Adobe Premiere Pro, and Adobe Premiere Rush. This is a playback-support statement, not a guarantee of every import, editing workflow, codec combination, or current application version. Check the compatibility of the software you intend to use. Choose another transfer route
AirDrop to a supported Apple device
- In Photos, select the ProRes clip and tap Share.
- Open Options, turn on All Photos Data, and tap Done.
- Choose AirDrop and send the clip to a supported recipient.
Apple says AirDrop can send the original ProRes video to supported iPhone, Mac, and iPad models. A recipient outside the supported group may receive a HEVC or H.264 version instead, so a successful transfer does not by itself prove that the received file remains ProRes. Use iCloud Photos for access across devices
iCloud Photos can make the original full-resolution video available across devices. On a Mac, open Photos settings and select Download Originals to this Mac to keep full-size originals locally. With Optimize Storage enabled, the Mac may keep space-saving versions while originals remain in iCloud. Allow time for syncing and make sure the Mac has enough storage for the originals. Export an unmodified original to external storage
- Connect the external drive or other storage device to the iPhone.
- In Photos, select the videos you want to export.
- Tap Share and choose Export Unmodified Original.
- Select the drive under Locations and tap Save.
This command exports the unmodified source. If a video has been edited, the exported file will not have those edits applied; export a rendered or shared version separately when you need the finished edit rather than the source media. Apple iPhone User Guide: Import and export photos and videos.

Plan for large files and recording requirements
ProRes footage can be up to 30 times larger than HEVC footage, and Apple says at least 10% of the iPhone’s storage must be free to record ProRes. For ProRes RAW at 30 fps, Apple gives examples exceeding 10 GB per minute; ProRes RAW HQ at 30 fps may exceed 15 GB per minute. These are examples, not fixed sizes for every frame rate or recording configuration. Check available space on the phone and destination before transferring. Recording requirements are not the same as transfer-speed requirements. Apple’s general external ProRes recording instructions specify exFAT formatting, do not support password-encrypted drives, and recommend a USB 3 cable rated at least 10 Gbit/s. For the cited recording modes, Apple specifies minimum drive write speeds of 220 MB/s for 4K60 ProRes and 440 MB/s for 4K120 ProRes. Those speeds apply to recording in those modes, not to every file copy.
Final Cut Camera’s guide separately describes external-storage recording support from iPhone 15 Pro or later, with a USB-C cable rated USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbit/s) or better for ProRes RAW or ProRes 4K at 120 fps. ProRes RAW recording itself requires iPhone 17 Pro or later and external storage. Troubleshoot common transfer problems
The clip is standard ProRes, not RAW
Check the codec and recording app. The Camera app’s ProRes setting is standard ProRes; ProRes RAW uses Final Cut Camera or certain third-party apps. Apple; Apple iPhone User Guide.

The iPhone does not appear or clips are unavailable
Reconnect the phone, unlock it, and check the cable and import application. Apple identifies the cable-and-app transfer path but does not specify one universal Windows importer or a single fix for every connection problem. Apple transfer guidance.
Windows cannot preview or open the clip
Check that the chosen application supports ProRes RAW. For playback, install Apple ProRes RAW for Windows and confirm the application is compatible with the component; its version 1.3 page lists Windows 10 64-bit. Apple ProRes RAW for Windows.
An AirDrop copy has a different codec
Confirm that All Photos Data was enabled and that the receiving device is supported for original ProRes transfer. Other recipients may get HEVC or H.264. Apple ProRes guidance.

The destination runs out of space
Check free capacity before copying. Apple’s 30-fps examples exceed 10 GB per minute for ProRes RAW and 15 GB per minute for ProRes RAW HQ; actual size depends on the recording configuration. Final Cut Camera User Guide.
The exported file does not include edits
Export Unmodified Original returns the original source. If you need edits baked into the result, export a rendered or shared version instead. Apple iPhone User Guide.
