You can get a file to a device in TWRP using USB OTG, MTP, ADB push, or ADB sideload. Choose OTG or MTP to browse for a file, ADB push to copy and keep a file on the device, or sideload to send and install a ZIP without first saving it to internal storage. Support depends on your device, recovery build, mounts, and encryption.
Choose a transfer method

These are general approaches, not a compatibility guarantee for a particular phone. The video published March 9, 2023 describes all four methods, but the exact recovery menus, available storage, and paths vary by device and build.
Use USB OTG to install from removable storage
- Copy the file to USB storage that your device can read through USB OTG.
- Connect the storage to the device using a compatible connector or adapter.
- In TWRP, open Install and browse to the attached storage. Select the ZIP only if it is a flashable package intended for your device.
- Follow the recovery prompts to install it.
OTG avoids relying on internal storage or a working MTP session, but only if the device and recovery can read the attached storage. TWRP’s precise options can differ across builds. The video’s four-method overview identifies OTG as one option.
Use MTP to copy from a computer
- Boot into TWRP and connect the device to the computer with USB.
- If the recovery exposes storage through MTP, open the device’s file-transfer view on the computer.
- Copy the ZIP or other file to a location that is accessible in TWRP.
- For a flashable ZIP, return to TWRP, choose Install, browse to the copied file, and follow the prompts.
MTP may be unavailable if recovery does not expose storage, or if the storage is not mounted or accessible. Large-file behavior has also been an implementation concern: Team Win’s December 22, 2014 release notes for TWRP 2.8.3.0 say MTP would report the filesystem’s correct maximum file size, which “may fix transfer of large files.” That historical note does not establish behavior on every current device or build. Use ADB push to copy and keep a file
- Enable or allow the ADB connection in recovery, if your TWRP build requires it.
- Connect the device to the computer and use Android platform tools. Check that the computer can see the recovery-connected device with
adb devices. - Push the file to a destination that exists and is accessible in recovery. Android Developers gives this example:
adb push myfile.txt /sdcard/myfile.txt. - In TWRP, browse to the copied file. Use Install for a flashable ZIP; other file types are simply copied unless an appropriate recovery action is available.
The example destination is not universal. Whether internal storage is mounted or decrypted, and which path is usable, depends on the device and recovery. Team Win specifically recommends using adb push or another copy method when you want a sideloaded ZIP stored on the device. Android Developers: Android Debug Bridge; Team Win TWRP FAQ
Use ADB sideload to send and install a ZIP
- In TWRP, open Advanced > ADB Sideload and start sideload mode.
- On the computer, run
adb sideload /path/to/file.zip, replacing the example path with the ZIP’s actual path. - Wait for the transfer and recovery operation to finish, then follow any prompts shown by TWRP.
Team Win describes sideload as a way to “push and install a zip using one command from your computer.” For TWRP 2.8.2.0 and later, its FAQ says the ZIP is streamed from the computer rather than stored on the device. If you need the ZIP to remain available in device storage, use ADB push or another copy method instead. Team Win TWRP FAQ

Understand sideload mode limits
Sideload is a separate ADB mode, not a normal file-copy session. The Android Open Source Project says that while recovery is in sideload mode, no ADB commands other than sideload work; its examples include logcat, reboot, push, pull, and shell. Version notes in Team Win’s FAQ
Team Win’s FAQ names TWRP 2.3 or higher as the minimum for sideload support. It also specifies ADB binary version requirements, including 1.0.32 or higher for TWRP 2.8.2.0 and later. These are documented version requirements, not a guarantee that every device or custom recovery build will work identically. Team Win TWRP FAQ

Check compatibility and avoid the wrong package
- Use a recovery build intended for your exact device and a ROM, firmware, or ZIP intended for that device. General transfer instructions cannot establish whether a specific package is safe for your model.
- If a destination does not appear in TWRP or a copy fails, check whether the relevant storage is mounted and accessible. Encryption handling and mount behavior vary, so do not assume a particular path will work.
- If MTP is unavailable, try ADB push only if ADB is exposed and a destination is accessible; otherwise, OTG may be an option if both the device and recovery support the attached storage.
- Do not treat an official manufacturer OTA update as interchangeable with a custom flashable ZIP. Team Win warns that differential updates may behave unexpectedly on modified systems and recommends returning to stock—including replacing TWRP with stock recovery—before applying an official update.
