Connect the Seagate One Touch Portable to your computer, open its drive in Finder on a Mac or File Explorer in Windows, then copy or drag files into it. The drive is preformatted as exFAT for use with both platforms, and you do not need Seagate Toolkit for a manual file transfer.
Transfer files with Finder or File Explorer
- Connect the drive. Use the supplied USB-C-to-USB-C cable, seating both ends firmly. If your computer has only USB-A ports, you will need a USB-C-to-USB-A cable; Seagate says one is not included for this model, and the USB-A port must support USB 3.0 or higher. - Open the drive volume. On Mac, open Finder and select the mounted Seagate drive in the sidebar. On Windows, open File Explorer and select the drive under This PC.
- Copy the files. Drag files or folders into the drive window, or use your file manager’s copy-and-paste commands. Wait for the copy to finish, then check that the files appear on the drive. Keep the originals on your computer until you have confirmed the copies.
- Eject before disconnecting. Use the operating system’s eject control for the mounted drive, wait until it is safe to remove, and then unplug the cable. Menu labels and locations vary by operating-system version.
Seagate’s getting-started instructions use Finder or File Explorer to access the drive. The ordinary copy workflow does not require Toolkit.
Understand the drive’s format before changing it
Seagate says, “Your device is preformatted with exFAT (Extended File Allocation Table) for compatibility with both Mac and Windows computers.” That makes the supplied format suitable for moving files between modern macOS and Windows computers. Seagate notes that exFAT is not compatible with Windows File History or macOS Time Machine; those built-in backup tools may require a file system native to the operating system. Read Seagate’s formatting guidance before making a change.
Formatting erases the drive’s existing contents. If you plan to reformat it, first copy any files you need to another location and verify that they are safe there. Choose a format based on how you will use the drive: retain exFAT for cross-platform file exchange, or consider a native format only if your intended backup tool requires it.

Use Toolkit only if you want automated backup or mirroring
Seagate Toolkit is optional. For One Touch Portable, it can set up a Windows backup plan and create a mirror folder on Windows or Mac. A mirror keeps paired folders synchronized: additions and edits are reflected between them, and deletions are synchronized too. That is different from a one-time copy, where the destination remains unchanged if you later edit or delete the source.

Troubleshoot a drive that is missing or transferring slowly
- Drive does not appear: Check that both cable ends are fully seated and try a supported port directly on the computer. If the computer has only USB-A, use a USB-C-to-USB-A cable with a USB 3.0-or-higher connection. If a hub causes detection or disconnection problems, connect the drive directly instead.
- Transfers are slow: Seagate says performance improves when connected to a USB 3.0-or-higher port; USB 2.0 operates at slower USB 2.0 transfer rates. Actual transfer time varies with the port, connection, files, and computer, so there is no single expected speed or duration.
- Copy reports a filename error: First check the drive’s actual file system. Seagate’s warning about characters such as
? < > / :applies to FAT32 volumes; the One Touch Portable is normally formatted as exFAT, so the FAT32 warning may not explain an error on an unchanged drive.
Seagate’s One Touch Portable FAQ covers transfer errors and connection troubleshooting. Exact hardware revisions or supplied cables can differ, so check the model information if your drive does not match these connection details.
