Transfer files from Android to a Windows PC with USB
Use a cable that supports data, not just charging. A phone may charge normally with a cable that cannot transfer files.
- Unlock your Android phone. Keep it unlocked while setting up the connection.
- Connect the phone to the PC or laptop with a data-capable USB cable.
- On the phone, swipe down to open notifications.
- Tap Charging this device via USB, or the equivalent notification.
- Under Use USB for, choose File Transfer.
- On Windows, open File Explorer.
- Select your phone under This PC.
- Open internal storage, browse to the required folder, and copy or drag the files to a folder on the PC.
- When finished, use Windows’ eject option if available, then unplug the phone.
Some phones use different wording. Motorola, for example, labels the setting Transfer files. Do not choose Transfer photos (PTP) unless you only need camera pictures and videos; PTP does not provide the same general file access.

Samsung Galaxy: enable file transfer and copy files
On recent Galaxy phones, USB mode may default to charging only. Samsung says that, starting with One UI 8.0, the default connection is Charging phone only.
- Connect the Galaxy phone to the PC.
- Pull down the Quick panel.
- Tap the USB for charging phone notification.
- Tap it again if necessary to display USB options.
- Select Transferring files / Android Auto.
- Open File Explorer on Windows and select the Galaxy phone under This PC.
On older Samsung software, wording may differ; choose the option that allows file transfer rather than charging only.
Copy files with Samsung My Files first
To organize files on the phone before connecting it to the computer, use Samsung’s My Files app. Open it, choose a category such as Images, Videos, Audio files, Documents, or Downloads, then touch and hold a file or folder.
Choose Copy to or Move to, select a destination, and confirm. Samsung notes this operation must be performed in My Files; it is not directly available from apps such as Gallery. Encrypted music and some purchased content may also be blocked from being moved to external storage.
Transfer files with Google Quick Share
Google Quick Share can send files between nearby Android devices and Windows computers. Google says transfers are encrypted and incoming transfers require approval. Google lists these requirements: a 64-bit Windows 10-or-later PC and Android 6.0 or later; ARM-based PCs require Windows 11 or later. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi or Ethernet must be on, both devices should use the same network, and they should be within 5 meters.

Google directs Samsung PC owners to Samsung’s Quick Share app from the Microsoft Store; Google’s Windows app is intended for non-Samsung PCs. Availability is restricted in Cuba, Iran, North Korea, and Syria.
- Install and open Google Quick Share on a compatible Windows PC.
- Sign in, choose a device name, and set receiving visibility.
- On Android, select the files and choose the PC as the recipient.
- Accept the transfer if prompted. Files received on Windows go to Downloads\Quick Share.
To send from Windows to Android, open the Windows app, select or drag in files, choose the visible phone, and wait for acceptance. Consider setting visibility to Contacts or Your devices rather than everyone. Check the sender and received files even when using encrypted transfer.
If discovery fails, check Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, network, visibility, and distance. Some office networks block device-to-device sharing; Google suggests turning on the phone hotspot and connecting the PC to it. You can also bring devices closer or restart the app or devices.
Transfer files with Phone Link
Microsoft’s file-sharing workflow for Phone Link and Link to Windows lists Windows 10 with the May 2019 update or later, Android 10 or later, Link to Windows version 1.24032.518.0 or later, and Phone Link version 1.24032.156.0 or later. Files received on Android are stored in Downloads\Sent from your PC; files received on the PC go under Downloads\Phone Link, with a configurable PC storage directory.
Only locally saved files are shared as files. When sharing cloud-stored files, Microsoft says links to their cloud locations are shared. Phone Link’s separate drag-and-drop feature is limited to supported phone brands and workflows: the PC and phone need the same Wi-Fi network, and Microsoft documents a limit of up to 100 files at a time and no single file larger than 512 MB. Folders and files backed up to the cloud cannot be dragged and dropped. Availability depends on phone brand, Android apps, and Windows version.
Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, including free updates, technical assistance, and security fixes; its support page recommends moving to Windows 11.

Use a Google Account to access files across devices
Google documents using a Google Account to access files on both a phone and computer, including Drive for files and folders and Google Photos for photos and videos. This is useful when you want access across devices rather than a one-time direct copy. Storage amounts, prices, upload limits, and sync behavior are not covered here.
Move versus copy: which should you use?
| Option | Result | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Copy | Leaves the original file on the phone | Backups and checking that the transfer worked |
| Move | Removes the original after the operation completes | Freeing storage after verifying the destination |
For important photos, documents, or recordings, copy them first. Open several transferred files on the computer before deleting the phone originals.
Android phone connected but not showing in File Explorer
1. The phone is locked
Unlock the phone after connecting it. Android commonly hides its storage from the computer while locked. Keep it unlocked until Windows finishes detecting it.
2. It is still in charging-only mode
Open the USB notification on the phone and select File Transfer, Transfer files, or the equivalent option. On Samsung One UI 8.0, select Transferring files / Android Auto.

3. The cable only charges
Try a different cable known to support data. A phone can charge normally even when the cable has no data connection.
4. The USB port or adapter is the problem
Try another USB port on the PC. Avoid an unreliable hub while troubleshooting. If using a USB-C adapter, test a direct cable or a different adapter.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo you need USB debugging?
No. USB debugging is not required for standard Android-to-Windows file transfer. The normal wired connection uses the phone’s USB notification and File Transfer option. Enabling developer settings or USB debugging will not fix a charging-only cable or a phone left in charging mode.
Transfer photos only
If you only need camera photos and videos, you can choose Transfer photos (PTP) on phones that provide the option. For documents, downloads, music, folders, and general file access, choose File Transfer.
