Use Samsung Smart Switch on the Galaxy S25 to receive data from your old Android phone, either wirelessly or with a compatible cable. It can move a broad range of personal content, but no transfer guarantees every app’s private data, account content, or protected media. Back up WhatsApp separately and verify your important files on the S25 before erasing the old phone.
Before you start
- Charge both phones and keep them nearby until the transfer finishes.
- Make room on both devices. Samsung UK states that its described Smart Switch transfer requires at least 500 MB of free internal memory on each phone. This is a Samsung UK support requirement, not a universal Android standard. Samsung UK’s transfer instructions also state that a wired transfer requires USB MTP media-transfer support.
- Install or update Smart Switch on the old phone if prompted. The S25 is the receiving device; your old phone sends the data.
- Back up WhatsApp separately if you use it. On the old phone, enable a WhatsApp backup before setting up WhatsApp on the S25. Google’s guidance says chats and data are restored from the cloud after signing into the new Android device and opening WhatsApp; follow the current prompts in the app. Google’s Android copy guidance
- Choose a connection. Wireless avoids cable and port issues. A cable may suit you if you have compatible hardware and can keep both phones connected as needed.
Transfer wirelessly with Smart Switch
- On the Galaxy S25, open Settings > Accounts and backup > Bring data from old device, or open the Smart Switch app. Menu labels can vary by software version.
- Tap Receive data, then choose Galaxy/Android.
- Choose Wireless and follow the S25’s instructions to connect the phones.
- On the old Android phone, open Smart Switch, tap Send data, choose the wireless option, and approve connection or permission prompts.
- Review the content categories offered, select what you want to move, and start the transfer. Keep the phones close and do not interrupt the process until Smart Switch indicates it is finished.
Samsung Australia says Smart Switch uses Wi-Fi Direct, so the phone-to-phone wireless connection does not require internet access or access to a local Wi-Fi network. Transfer with a cable
- Connect the phones with a compatible data cable. Depending on the old phone’s port and the cable, you may need a USB adapter; a particular cable is not required for every Android-to-S25 transfer.
- On the S25, open Smart Switch, tap Receive data, choose Galaxy/Android, and select the cable option.
- On the old phone, open Smart Switch, tap Send data, and follow the on-screen instructions. Approve any connection and access prompts.
- Select the offered data to transfer and wait for the process to finish before disconnecting the phones.

What transfers—and what may not
Depending on the source phone and its software, Smart Switch can transfer personal content such as contacts, calendar entries, messages, notes and call logs; photos, videos, music and documents; apps; and some settings. - Account-synced data: Items synced to an online account are not transferred by Smart Switch itself. Sign into the relevant account on the S25 and allow its data to sync.
- Private app data: Some apps do not let Smart Switch copy their private storage. You may need to sign in again or use the app’s own backup and restore process.
- Protected media: DRM-protected content may not transfer. Check the service or app that provides it for how to access it on the new phone.
- Downloads and hidden folders: Google lists PDFs and media in hidden folders among items that may not copy through its Android setup-copy process. That is a separate setup flow, so do not assume its exclusions describe every Smart Switch transfer. Check important files yourself.
- WhatsApp: Restore chats through WhatsApp’s own cloud-backup process rather than assuming Smart Switch will copy every chat.
Check the S25 before wiping the old phone
Open the relevant apps on the S25 and confirm that the information you depend on is present. In particular, check contacts, recent messages, photos and videos, documents and downloads, and any app data that matters to you. Confirm that WhatsApp has restored the expected chats. If something is missing, keep the old phone intact while you check the account sync, app-specific backup, or Smart Switch transfer options. Erase or trade in the old phone only after you have verified what you need.
