Yes—you can send an EPUB to a Kindle. Amazon recommends using Send to Kindle, which accepts EPUB files up to 200 MB each. USB transfer is another option, but the steps depend on your computer and Kindle model.
Choose a transfer method

Transfer an EPUB with Send to Kindle
- Open Amazon’s Send to Kindle service or use another Amazon-documented Send to Kindle option.
- Select the EPUB file and send it to the Kindle account or device you want to use. Amazon lists EPUB as a supported format and sets a maximum of 200 MB per file.
- Connect the Kindle to Wi-Fi, then sync or check its library. The book should appear in the library associated with the account or device you selected.
If the book does not appear
- Confirm the file is an EPUB and is no larger than Amazon’s 200 MB per-file limit.
- Check that you sent it to the Amazon account or device you are using.
- Reconnect the Kindle to Wi-Fi and sync or refresh its library.
Transfer an EPUB over USB
Amazon recommends using the USB cable included with the Kindle when transferring files by cable. The exact steps depend on the computer and Kindle model.
On Windows
- Connect the Kindle to your computer with a USB cable that supports data transfer.
- Open File Explorer and locate the Kindle as an external storage device.
- Place the EPUB in the appropriate Kindle folder, following the folder structure available on your device.
- Use the Kindle’s on-screen Disconnect button if it appears; otherwise, unplug it as Amazon instructs.
Amazon says Windows users generally do not need a separate application for USB transfer. Keep the complete Windows transfer path under 256 characters.

On Mac
Check your Kindle model before connecting it. Under Amazon’s current instructions, Kindle Scribe and Kindle models released in 2024 require the Send to Kindle app’s USB File Manager to manage USB files. Earlier models generally do not. Amazon’s Mac USB Manager supports Intel and M1–M3 Macs running macOS 12 or later; very old Macs or Kindle models may have distinct instructions.
- Install or open Amazon’s Send to Kindle for Mac app and connect the Kindle by USB.
- Open USB File Manager.
- Drag the EPUB into the Kindle’s Documents folder.
- Disconnect using the on-screen Disconnect button if available, or unplug as Amazon instructs.
The USB File Manager supports drag-and-drop rather than more advanced file operations. Amazon’s instructions are on its Connect, Browse, and Transfer Files on E-Reader page.

Troubleshoot a USB transfer
- Check the folder. Confirm the book is in the appropriate Kindle folder. In Amazon’s Mac USB File Manager workflow, that folder is Documents.
- Check the cable. A cable that charges but does not transfer data will not work for file transfer. Start with the cable supplied with your Kindle; if you need another, check connector type and data compatibility for your exact model.
- Check the file’s DRM status. Amazon says transferred book files must be free of DRM and placed in the correct folder type in its KDP book-preview transfer instructions. That guidance is specific to its preview workflow, so it should not be treated as a universal explanation for every USB transfer problem. See Amazon KDP’s preview transfer help.
- Keep file operations on your computer. Amazon advises renaming, compressing, or extracting files on the computer, not within the Kindle file system.
What EPUB support means for reading features
EPUB compatibility does not guarantee identical features across Kindle devices and apps. Amazon’s personal-document notes guidance distinguishes annotation features among Kindle Scribe, other Kindle e-readers, and apps. Amazon specifically says Kindle Scribe does not currently support handwriting features in EPUB comics, manga, and children’s books.
