Use Samsung Smart Switch to move supported content from your old Android phone to your Galaxy A17 5G. You can transfer wirelessly or with a compatible cable; the items available depend on the phones, so review Smart Switch’s selection and check important data on the A17 before erasing the old phone.
Before you start
- Keep the phones close together. For a wireless transfer, Samsung specifies keeping them within four inches.
- Charge both phones before starting. Wireless transfers let both phones remain connected to chargers; a wired transfer does not.
- Use the A17’s setup prompt to copy data from a Galaxy or Android device. If you have already completed setup, open Smart Switch on the new Galaxy instead. Samsung notes that setup screens can vary by setup method. See Samsung’s Galaxy A17 5G setup guide.
Transfer wirelessly with Smart Switch
- Open Smart Switch on both phones. On the old Android phone, select Send from this phone, then Wireless.
- On the Galaxy A17 5G, select Receive on this phone, choose Galaxy/Android, then choose Wireless.
- Follow the pairing prompt on the phones and allow them to connect. Keep them within four inches during the transfer, as Samsung’s wireless instructions specify.
- Review the available content, select what you want to copy, and start the transfer. Wait for Smart Switch to finish before disconnecting or closing the app.
Wireless is useful when you do not have a compatible cable or want both phones to stay on chargers. Samsung’s instructions do not publish a general transfer-speed or duration benchmark; Smart Switch displays an estimate during the transfer. Transfer with a cable
- Connect the phones with a compatible data cable. Depending on the phones and cable combination, you may also need a USB-OTG adapter.
- On the old Android phone, open Smart Switch and select Send from this phone, then Cable.
- On the A17, select Receive on this phone, choose Galaxy/Android, then choose Cable.
- Accept any connection prompt, review the content Smart Switch offers, select what to transfer, and start.
Samsung recommends wired transfer because it can transfer the most types of data, according to its Smart Switch support guidance. That is a vendor recommendation, not a guarantee that every item from every Android phone will transfer. A wired transfer can take a while, and the phones cannot both remain connected to chargers during it. Check your old phone’s port before choosing or buying a cable; the right cable or adapter depends on that model. See Samsung’s wired transfer guidance.
What Smart Switch can transfer—and what to check
Depending on the connected devices, Smart Switch may offer contacts, messages, call logs, photos, videos, music, documents, settings, and applications. The available selection varies by device, and some content or app data is transferable only between Galaxy phones. Samsung does not promise that every listed item or app’s internal data will move from an Android phone of another brand. Check the scan results on the A17 rather than assuming all data is included. Verify important items before you wipe the old phone
- Open several transferred photos and videos on the A17.
- Check that important contacts, messages, and call history are present.
- Open essential apps and confirm their data and sign-ins. Some app data may need to be restored or set up separately.
- Keep the old phone intact until you have confirmed the items you need on the A17.
These checks are prudent because Smart Switch’s available content depends on the phones and does not guarantee that every item transfers.
