You can transfer data to a Google Pixel 3a from an Android phone or an iPhone during the Pixel’s initial setup. Google recommends using a cable for Android transfers to this older Pixel; an eligible Android phone can also transfer over Wi-Fi. For iPhone, Google’s classic setup flow uses a cable for the broadest selection of data. Before copying, check the Pixel’s on-screen list because what transfers depends on the source phone and method.
Before you start
- Charge both phones, keep them nearby, and have a Wi-Fi connection available. Back up or sync the old phone’s data before you begin.
- Use a cable that supports data, not just charging. The connector you need depends on the old phone.
- Start the transfer while setting up the Pixel 3a. Google’s instructions group it with Pixel 7 Pro and earlier devices for Android transfers, and with Pixel 9a and earlier for the classic iPhone transfer flow.
- If moving from an iPhone, turn off iMessage and FaceTime before you start. This helps ensure new messages reach the Pixel.

How do I transfer data from Android to Pixel 3a?
Google recommends a cable for this older Pixel setup path. The Wi-Fi option is available only when the old phone runs Android 5 or later and the Pixel runs Android 12 or later.
- Insert the SIM card if applicable, turn on the Pixel 3a, and tap Get Started.
- At Copy apps & data, tap Next, then Copy your data. For the cable path on Pixel 7 Pro and earlier, Google notes that you may need to tap the screen image five times to reveal the USB-C cable option.
- Tap Next at Use your old device, connect the phones with the Android charging cable, and follow the prompts.
- On the Pixel, choose Express to transfer your Google Account and backed-up data, or Customize to select items. Tap Copy to begin.
To use Wi-Fi instead, tap No cable? and then Copy without cable on the Pixel. Open the setup notification on the old phone and follow the prompts on both devices. This method requires Android 5 or later on the source phone and Android 12 or later on the Pixel.

What Android data can transfer?
Google lists texts, photos, music, contacts, calendars, and apps as examples. Its broader transfer information also includes files, call history, and WhatsApp history, but app data and some other items have qualifications: manufacturer-specific app data may not transfer; notes, passwords, and alarms may depend on whether you use Google apps; and apps must be available through Google Play to be copied. Review the Pixel’s item list before confirming the copy.
How do I transfer data from iPhone to Pixel 3a?
Use Google’s classic setup flow for Pixel 9a and earlier. A cable supports more of the data types Google lists than classic wireless transfer.

- On the iPhone, turn off iMessage and FaceTime.
- Turn on the Pixel 3a and begin setup. Choose iPhone or iPad or Copy your data, depending on the wording shown on the setup screen.
- Connect the iPhone’s charging cable to the Pixel. Use a compatible adapter if the cable and Pixel connectors require one.
- When prompted on the iPhone, tap Trust. On the Pixel, select the data types to copy and tap Copy.
- Keep the iPhone on its transfer screen until the copy finishes.

Apple Passwords do not automatically transfer. Export them from the iPhone and import them into Google Password Manager or another password manager. Google also cautions that some app data, in-app purchases, paid apps or apps unavailable from Google Play, DRM-protected music, and Safari bookmarks may not copy.
Choose a compatible cable or adapter
Google’s cable guidance says a USB-C-to-USB-C cable works for Android phones and newer iOS devices without a Quick Switch Adapter. For iPhone X or older, Google lists either a Lightning-to-USB-C cable or a Lightning-to-USB-A cable used with the Quick Switch Adapter. Confirm that the cable carries data: some charging cables only supply power.

The original Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL retail boxes included a USB-C cable and Quick Switch Adapter, according to Google’s Pixel box contents information. That does not mean an adapter will be present with a used or replacement phone.

Messages from an iPhone are missing
Confirm that messages were selected during the transfer. Google says messages can take up to 24 hours to appear. If they are still missing, use Google’s documented post-setup transfer option for the device. Keep iMessage turned off when switching so new messages can reach the Pixel.

The Pixel reports a cable problem
Reseat both ends of the cable and try another data-capable cable. A cable that charges a phone may still lack data support.
The transfer pauses or stops
A Pixel with insufficient free storage can pause a transfer. Check available storage, keep both phones powered, and leave them connected while copying.

Photos or app content did not copy
Check whether the photos are stored in iCloud or Google Photos, and whether the app’s data was backed up or is transferable. Not every app or type of app content moves automatically.
WhatsApp history is missing
Google’s iPhone guide describes a cable-based WhatsApp migration. WhatsApp may need to be transferred after initial Pixel setup, so follow the WhatsApp-specific prompts rather than assuming its history moved with the general copy.
The SIM or eSIM did not move
Phone data transfer does not guarantee that a SIM or eSIM will move with it. eSIM transfer depends on carrier and device support; use the carrier’s process if a transfer option does not appear.
