Use Samsung Smart Switch to move data from your old Android phone to a Galaxy A35. On the A35, choose Receive data; on the old phone, choose Send data. Samsung prefers wireless transfer, but a cable or a PC/Mac backup and restore are alternatives. The transfer is selective, so check important apps and files before wiping or trading in the old phone.
Before you start
- Charge both phones, keep them close together, and make sure you can unlock the old phone.
- Check that the A35 has enough free storage for the items you plan to move.
- Install or update Smart Switch on the old Android phone. It is generally preloaded on a new Samsung phone; if it is not on the A35, open Smart Switch directly or look under Settings > Accounts and backup.
- For wireless transfer, enable Bluetooth and connect both phones to Wi-Fi, or ensure they have sufficient mobile data. A stable connection helps the transfer proceed smoothly.
Menu names can vary by Android and One UI version or region. Follow the prompts shown on your phones if they differ from the paths below. Samsung’s Android switch guide and transfer instructions describe the supported routes.
Transfer directly with Smart Switch
- On the Galaxy A35: Open Settings > Accounts and backup > Bring data from old device, or open Smart Switch. Tap Receive data, choose Galaxy/Android, then select Wireless or Cable.
- On the old Android phone: Open Smart Switch, tap Send data, and choose the same connection type. Approve the connection when prompted.
- On the A35: Select the available categories you want to transfer and start the copy. Keep the phones together and follow the progress on screen. The time depends on the amount of data and the connection.
Choose wireless or cable
Wireless is Samsung’s preferred method and does not require a data cable. If pairing is unreliable, or a wired connection suits your setup better, select Cable. A cable supplied with the new phone may be enough. If the old phone has a different port, a compatible USB cable and possibly a USB OTG adapter may be needed. Check both phones’ ports and confirm the cable supports data transfer before buying an accessory.
Use a computer instead
If direct phone-to-phone pairing is inconvenient, Samsung also supports Smart Switch for PC or Mac: install the computer app, connect and back up the old phone, then connect the A35 and restore the saved data. See Samsung’s Smart Switch instructions for the computer route.

What transfers—and what may need separate handling
Smart Switch lets you select from the categories available for your devices; it does not make a perfect clone. Samsung says most app data can transfer, but secure or encrypted data—including WhatsApp chats—will not transfer through Smart Switch. Some apps keep data on their own servers, sideloaded apps may need to be installed manually, and app credentials such as banking logins may not come across. Be ready to sign in again and use each app’s own backup or restore process when needed. Samsung explains these limits in its transfer guide.
Android’s own setup-copy process has its own coverage and exclusions; these are not a complete inventory of Smart Switch. Google lists items such as apps and some app data, music, photos, videos, contacts, messages, many settings, wallpaper, and call history as possible transfer content. Its setup copy may omit downloads such as PDFs, media in hidden folders, apps outside Play Store, data from apps that do not use Android backup, non-Google accounts and their data, contacts or calendars synced elsewhere, and ringtones. Restore WhatsApp separately
For the Google cloud restore route, Google says WhatsApp chat and data can be restored after you sign in on the new Android phone and open WhatsApp, provided WhatsApp backups were enabled on the old phone first. Use WhatsApp’s current in-app backup, migration, and restore prompts for your account; Smart Switch alone does not bring over encrypted chats.
If Smart Switch will not connect
- Restart both phones and move them close together.
- Check that both have adequate charge, Bluetooth is enabled, and Smart Switch is installed and up to date.
- For wireless transfer, confirm both phones share Wi-Fi or have sufficient mobile data. Move other nearby phones running Smart Switch farther away.
- If wireless pairing still fails, try Smart Switch over a compatible USB cable. Samsung lists these steps in its connection troubleshooting guide.
If you are using Android’s setup-copy flow rather than Smart Switch and Wi-Fi is slow or unavailable, Google recommends trying a cable when the device offers that option. Google says cable transfer works with most Android devices running Android 5.0 or later; consult its transfer troubleshooting page for setup-specific issues.

If the old phone is missing or setup was skipped
The old phone is unavailable
If Google One device backup was enabled before the old phone became unavailable, you may be able to restore that backup while setting up the A35. Select the relevant backup and the data types to restore. Without a pre-existing backup, that cloud route cannot recover data that was never backed up. Google describes the restore options in its Android copy and restore guidance.
You already set up the A35
Look for Finish setting up on the A35 or open its Accounts and backup transfer settings to start Samsung’s after-setup Smart Switch route. Android’s setup-copy options vary by device and software version; Google warns that some devices may require returning to setup or resetting the phone to copy data that way. Check the relevant Samsung Smart Switch steps or Google setup-transfer guidance for the route available on your device.

The old phone has a broken or unresponsive display
The ordinary Smart Switch steps require you to operate and approve prompts on the old phone. Samsung provides separate assistance for a damaged device, but the outcome depends on the phone and damage; the standard transfer flow does not guarantee recovery.

Verify the transfer before retiring the old phone
- Open the A35’s contacts, gallery, messages, and other important apps; check a sample of recent and older items.
- Look for files in Downloads and any folders or apps you know store important data, including hidden folders.
- Sign in to apps that require it and complete any app-specific restore, especially WhatsApp.
- Keep the old phone intact until you have confirmed the information you need is available on the A35.
