You can transfer data from an old Android phone to a Google Pixel during the Pixel’s initial setup, either wirelessly or with a compatible data-capable cable. Charge both phones, connect to strong Wi-Fi, check the Pixel’s free storage, then follow the on-screen pairing prompts and choose what to copy. Pixel 9 and later also support adding data after setup.
Choose a cable or wireless transfer
Google supports both methods, and its general Android guidance says they can transfer the same types of data. The choice is mainly about what you have available and which connection is reliable in your situation.
| Method | What you need | When it makes sense |
|---|---|---|
| Wireless | Both phones nearby, powered on, and connected to strong Wi-Fi. Follow the Pixel’s pairing prompts; on some Pixel setup flows, you’ll scan a QR code. | Choose this if you do not have a compatible data cable or prefer not to connect the phones physically. |
| Cable | A cable that supports data transfer and fits both phones; an adapter may be needed if their ports differ. Google also mentions a Quick Switch Adapter when one is needed. | Choose this if you have the right cable and want a direct physical connection. |
Check the ports on both devices before using a cable. A charging-only cable may not support data transfer. Google’s instructions are model-specific: Pixel 8 and later use a newer guided pairing flow, while Pixel Fold, Pixel 7 Pro, and earlier models have different setup screens. For older-model wireless instructions, Google specifies Android 5 or later on the old phone and Android 12 or later on the Pixel. See Google’s Pixel transfer instructions and Android’s cable and wireless guidance.
Prepare both phones before transferring
- Back up and sync what matters. Sync apps with your Google Account, save passwords and passkeys so they’re available on the new device, and back up the old phone’s data.
- Charge both phones and keep them nearby. Connect them to strong Wi-Fi, especially if you plan to transfer wirelessly.
- Check the Pixel’s free storage. A transfer can pause if the Pixel runs out of space. Free storage before starting if needed.
- Check messaging on the old phone. Update Google Messages and set it as the default messaging app. If older messages are stored on the SIM, move them to the phone’s main storage if necessary.

Transfer during Pixel setup
Pixel 8 and later
- Turn on the new Pixel and begin setup. Choose the option to copy data from an Android or Pixel phone when prompted.
- On the old phone, respond to the setup notification and follow the pairing instructions on both screens. The newer flow can use a QR code.
- Unlock the old phone with its screen lock when requested.
- Choose the data you want to copy and let the transfer finish. If using a cable, connect the phones when the Pixel prompts you.
Pixel Fold, Pixel 7 Pro, and earlier
These models use a different setup flow, with cable and Wi-Fi paths shown in Google’s instructions. Follow the prompts displayed for your particular Pixel rather than expecting the same screens as Pixel 8 and later. For wireless transfers on these models, the old Android phone must be running Android 5 or later and the Pixel Android 12 or later.

What transfers—and what may not
Google lists these types of data among the items that can be copied:
- Google Accounts and device settings
- Contacts, calendar events, and call history
- Text messages and attachments
- Photos, videos, audio files, files, and folders
- WhatsApp chat history
- Eligible apps
Some items depend on where they are stored or which service you use. Google Keep notes and Google Password Manager credentials, for example, are tied to Google services. Apps are eligible when they were downloaded or purchased through Google Play. Data in apps made specifically for another phone manufacturer may not transfer, and you should not assume that every app’s private data or settings will be copied. Review Google’s transferable data details for the categories and qualifications.
Transfer data after setup or without the old phone
Adding data after setup on Pixel 9 and later
If you already completed setup, Pixel 9 and later can add more data using Settings > Accounts and backup > Android Switch. Follow the prompts to connect the previous Android phone and select the data to transfer. Google describes this as a way to add data after initial setup.
Restoring when the old phone is unavailable
If you can’t use the old phone but have a Google Account backup, sign in with the same Google Account during Pixel setup and restore from that backup. The available data depends on what was backed up.

- The transfer pauses or stops: Check that both phones remain powered on and connected as prompted. For a wireless transfer, keep them close and verify the Wi-Fi connection. For a cable transfer, check that the cable is seated and supports data.
- The Pixel runs out of space: Free storage on the Pixel before trying again. Google warns that a full device can pause a transfer.
- Messages are missing: Update Google Messages on the old phone, make it the default messaging app, and check whether older messages are on the SIM rather than the phone’s main storage.
- An app or its content is not there yet: Some apps take time to download and install, so their icons or content may appear after the main transfer finishes.
- The cable does not fit: Check both phones’ ports and use a compatible data cable or an appropriate adapter. Google mentions a Quick Switch Adapter when needed; whether you need one depends on the devices’ connections.
- You already finished setup: On Pixel 9 and later, use Android Switch in Settings to add data after setup. If the old phone is gone, use an available Google Account backup during setup.
