To transfer data, start your Nothing Phone’s setup, connect it to Wi-Fi or mobile data, then choose the Android transfer or “Copy apps and data” option shown on screen. Follow the prompts to pair the phones—by cable or QR-assisted wireless setup, depending on the flow offered—and select what to copy. Keep the old phone until you have checked your important data on the Nothing Phone.
Before you start
- Charge both phones and unlock the old Android phone. Keep its PIN, pattern, or password handy in case setup asks you to confirm it.
- Connect the Nothing Phone to Wi-Fi or mobile data. Nothing says the transfer will not copy data if the new phone is offline.
- Check that the Nothing Phone has enough available storage for the data you want to move.
- If possible, back up the old phone to the Google Account you plan to use on the Nothing Phone. Nothing recommends using a Google Account for downloading apps and copying content.
- If you intend to use a cable, check that it fits both phones and supports data transfer. If it does not fit, a compatible adapter may help; otherwise use wireless setup if the phone offers it.
Nothing’s instructions describe both a cable-based transfer and a QR-assisted setup flow. Google’s general Android instructions also support cable and wireless transfer. The exact screens and available options can vary by device and Android version, so follow the choices displayed on your Nothing Phone. Transfer data during Nothing Phone setup
- Start the Nothing Phone. Turn it on and follow the setup screens. Connect to Wi-Fi or mobile data when prompted.
- Choose the Android transfer option. When setup offers “Copy apps and data” or a similar Android-device transfer choice, select it.
- Pair the phones using an available method.
- By cable: Connect the phones using a data-capable cable that fits both devices. Unlock the old phone and approve the connection if prompted.
- By QR code: If the Nothing Phone displays a QR code, scan it with the old Android phone and follow the pairing prompts.
- Sign in and choose what to copy. Sign in to the Google Account you want associated with the Nothing Phone, select the data categories offered, and start the transfer.
- Wait for setup to finish copying. Keep the phones connected and follow any remaining prompts. Nothing says apps that do not transfer can be downloaded from Google Play.
- Check the result before retiring the old phone. Open important items on the Nothing Phone—such as photos, videos, contacts, messages, calendar entries, and apps—before resetting, trading in, or recycling the old device.
Google says its general Android setup flow supports both cable and wireless transfer and that the methods support the same data. A cable may need an adapter if its connectors do not fit both phones. - Apps and certain app data
- Music, photos, and videos
- Contacts stored on the phone or SIM
- Text messages, including multimedia in messages
- Call history
- Wallpaper and most phone settings
Settings coverage varies by phone and Android version. Nothing specifically names texts, videos, contacts, calendar, and music in its cable-transfer instructions, but neither manufacturer documentation promises that every app or private app data will move intact. You may need to sign in to apps again, or use an app’s own backup or migration process.

- Downloads such as PDFs and media stored in hidden folders
- Apps that were not installed from Google Play
- App data from apps that do not use Android backup
- Non-Google accounts and their data
- Contacts or calendars synced with services other than Google
- Ringtones and certain settings
For WhatsApp, Google says chats and data can restore from the cloud after you sign in and open WhatsApp on the new Android phone, provided WhatsApp backup was enabled on the old phone first. Follow the app’s own restore prompts as a separate step. Google’s list of copied and excluded data
How long the transfer can take
Transfer duration depends on the amount of data and the method. Nothing describes its cable transfer as taking a few minutes to over an hour, and its newer Android transfer instructions give a typical estimate of five minutes to one hour. Google says direct copying may take a few minutes to a few hours. These are procedural estimates, not guarantees.

If restoring from a Google backup instead of copying directly, Google says the full restore can take up to 24 hours. Keep the phone connected and allow background restoration to finish. Restore from a Google backup
If the old phone is unavailable, you may be able to restore a prior Android backup to the Nothing Phone during setup. Sign in with the Google Account that holds the backup and choose the available restore option. You may be asked to confirm the old phone’s screen lock. The result depends on what was backed up and whether that backup is compatible with the new device.

Google notes that backups and restores vary by phone, Android version, and app; some apps do not back up or restore all settings and data. Restoring a backup from a newer Android version to an older one can also result in an incomplete transfer. Check what the backup contains before relying on it. Look for a post-setup transfer option
If you skipped the copy step, Google says some devices show a “Finish setting up” option after initial setup. Google also documents a post-setup copy option on Android 17 and later, and on select devices running earlier versions. Availability depends on the device manufacturer and Android version, so this option is not guaranteed on every Nothing Phone. Google: Troubleshoot data transfer to a new Android device

Verify your data before erasing the old phone
Open the important items on the Nothing Phone and confirm they are present and usable. Check photos and videos, contacts, messages, calendar entries, and essential apps; also confirm app-specific content where applicable. Google advises erasing the old device only after confirming that the data has copied. Google: Switch to a new Android device
