Use the Galaxy A57’s setup wizard and Samsung Smart Switch to copy eligible data from an old Android phone or iPhone. You can transfer wirelessly or by cable; iPhone users also have an iCloud option. Apps may need to be installed or signed into again, and some app data will not transfer, so keep the old phone until you have checked the essentials.
Before you start
- Connect the A57 to Wi-Fi during setup, and keep both phones nearby.
- Charge both devices and have the old phone’s screen lock and account credentials ready. Samsung US says Smart Switch requires at least 20% battery; a wired transfer cannot charge through the connected cable. Samsung’s Android transfer guidance
- Install or update Smart Switch on the old phone if prompted. Allow the requested permissions on both devices.
- If you use an iPhone, make sure you can access your Apple Account for the iCloud route. For WhatsApp, do not sign in on the A57 before completing the iPhone chat-transfer flow.
Start the transfer during A57 setup
- Turn on the Galaxy A57, choose a language, and follow the terms and setup prompts.
- Choose Easy setup, then select Galaxy or Android device or iPhone or iPad.
- Scan the QR code displayed on the A57 with the old phone if prompted, then follow the instructions on both screens.
- Choose the data categories to transfer and start copying. Keep the phones close and connected until Smart Switch finishes.

If the A57 is already set up
- On the A57, open Settings > Accounts and backup > Smart Switch. You can also look for Smart Switch in the Samsung folder.
- Tap Receive data, then choose the old phone type.
- Connect the phones wirelessly or by cable, select the categories you want, and begin the transfer.

Choose the transfer method that suits you

Use a cable for Android or iPhone
Android to Galaxy A57
On the A57, choose Receive data > Galaxy/Android. Connect the old phone when prompted, choose the available categories, and start the transfer. Samsung supports wireless and wired Android transfers. A suitable USB-C to USB-C data cable may already be available; check the old phone’s port and confirm the cable supports data before buying another. Some Galaxy source devices may need an adapter. iPhone to Galaxy A57
Choose iPhone or iPad in the A57 transfer flow. Samsung documents a Lightning-to-USB-C or USB-C-to-USB-C cable; many USB-A cables require an OTG adapter. Follow the prompts on both devices and grant requested permissions. Alternatively, choose the iCloud route in Smart Switch. Samsung’s iPhone transfer instructions
What transfers—and what may not
Smart Switch displays categories you can select, and what is available depends on the connected phone. Some apps may look dimmed while they are still installing, so wait for installation to finish before opening them. Samsung describes most app data as transferable, but it does not promise a complete clone of every phone or app. Samsung UK’s app and data limitations

- App data and sign-ins: Secure or encrypted data may not transfer. Server-based apps may require their own backup and a fresh sign-in; banking and other apps may not retain login details.
- Apps outside Google Play: Apps not downloaded through Play Store may need to be installed manually.
- iPhone apps: App stores have different selections. Smart Switch may offer an Android equivalent only when one exists; an iOS app with no Android version cannot be moved as an app.
- DRM-protected content: Samsung says DRM content cannot transfer.
- WhatsApp from iPhone: Use the latest iOS app and complete the chat-transfer process before signing in to WhatsApp on the A57. If you sign in first, Samsung says the chats cannot be transferred through that flow. Samsung’s WhatsApp transfer instructions
Check the A57 before wiping the old phone
- Open Contacts, Gallery, Messages, and important document locations; confirm the content you need is present.
- Open each important app. Sign in again where requested and use that app’s own migration or cloud-backup process for anything Smart Switch did not bring over.
- Keep the old phone unchanged until you have confirmed your essential files, accounts, and app data work on the A57.
If Smart Switch gets stuck
- Confirm both phones have Wi-Fi access for a wireless transfer, stay close together, and check that Smart Switch is installed where needed.
- If using the QR flow, check that the old phone’s camera can scan the code. Restart both devices if the transfer fails.
- For a cable transfer, check the ports, cable, and any required adapter. Start with adequate battery because the cable connection cannot also charge the phones.
- If transferring to external storage, check its remaining capacity; transfer fewer categories first and move the rest later if needed.
- During A57 setup, confirm SIM or eSIM activation with your carrier where relevant; eSIM availability depends on carrier support. Samsung A57 troubleshooting guidance
