The best way to transfer contacts depends on where they’re stored and which phones you’re switching between. If they’re synced to an account such as iCloud or Google, add that same account to the new phone and enable Contacts. For a new phone, you can also use its setup transfer process. Check that your contacts appear on the destination phone before erasing or giving away the old one.

Choose the right transfer method

Phone change Recommended method What to verify
iPhone to iPhone Sync the same iCloud or other contacts account on the new iPhone. If your contacts are in Google, add that Google Account and enable Contacts sync. Confirm the intended account is enabled and the contacts appear in the Contacts app. Google’s iPhone sync instructions; Apple’s SIM contact guidance.
Android to Android Use the same Google Account if it holds your contacts, or follow the new phone’s setup transfer instructions. The exact transfer route depends on the phone and the setup method. Android’s switching guidance; Google’s Android setup guidance.
Android to iPhone For a new iPhone, use Apple’s Move to iOS setup flow. Alternatively, add the Google Account that holds your contacts to the iPhone and enable Contacts sync. Move to iOS is a setup migration; Google sync keeps the account as the contacts source. Apple’s Move to iOS instructions; Google’s iPhone sync instructions.
iPhone to Android Follow the new Android phone’s setup transfer flow, using cable or wireless if offered. Samsung Galaxy users can also use Smart Switch. Supported devices and transferable data vary by method. Android’s switching guidance; Google’s Android setup guidance; Samsung Smart Switch instructions.
Contacts stored only on a SIM Import them from the old SIM on the iPhone. The SIM must support contact storage, and only information actually saved to it can be imported. Apple’s SIM contact guidance.

Before you transfer: find where your contacts are stored

Contacts may be associated with a cloud account, stored locally on a phone, or saved on a SIM. Start by opening the Contacts app on the old phone and checking which accounts are shown or enabled. If you use Google Contacts, the account may be the source of the address book across devices; Google says edits sync to the iPhone and other places where you’re signed in. Google explains how to sync Google Contacts with an iPhone.

Don’t assume contacts are on the SIM just because you move the SIM to the new phone. Apple states that an iPhone does not store contacts on the SIM; its SIM import option is for contacts previously saved there by a phone that supports SIM contact storage. Apple’s instructions for importing SIM contacts.

Sync Google Contacts to an iPhone

  1. On the iPhone, open Settings > Apps > Contacts > Add Account > Google.
  2. Sign in to the Google Account that contains the contacts.
  3. Turn on Contacts sync and save the account.
  4. Open the Contacts app and check that the expected names and numbers appear.

If the Google Account is already on the iPhone, open its account settings and make sure Contacts sync is enabled. Menu labels may differ slightly between iOS releases. With account sync, later contact changes can sync to the iPhone and other signed-in locations; this is different from making a one-time copy during phone setup. Google’s sync instructions.

Move contacts from Android to a new iPhone

Use Move to iOS during iPhone setup

If the iPhone is new and still in its initial setup, follow Apple’s Move to iOS instructions and select the supported content you want to transfer. Apple includes contacts among the data covered by this migration flow. Because it is tied to setup, it is not the same as ongoing Google Contacts sync. Follow Apple’s Move to iOS guidance.

Use Google sync instead

If your contacts already live in Google Contacts, or you want to continue managing them there, add that Google Account to the iPhone and enable Contacts sync using the steps above. Choose this route when you want the Google account to remain the source of your contacts, rather than relying on a setup-time migration. Google’s iPhone sync instructions.

Move contacts from iPhone to Android

On the new Android phone, follow its on-screen setup transfer instructions. Google documents cable and wireless options for supported flows and lists contacts among transferable data, but the available data depends on the method and device. Its newer transfer experience is limited to select Pixel and Samsung devices; a classic flow is available for other Android phones. Check the instructions for your specific model instead of assuming every Android phone has the same steps. Android’s switching guidance; Google’s setup guidance.

Wired or wireless transfer?

Use whichever option the new phone’s supported setup flow offers. A cable is optional, not a requirement for every phone pair; check that both phones’ ports and the cable are compatible with the instructions for your devices. If the setup flow offers wireless transfer, you do not need a cable for that route. Google’s Android setup instructions.

Import contacts from a SIM to an iPhone

  1. Insert the old SIM into the iPhone if it fits and supports contact storage.
  2. Open Settings > Apps > Contacts > Import SIM Contacts.
  3. Choose a destination if prompted, then wait for the import to finish.

If setup is already complete or contacts are missing

Some migration routes are part of a phone’s first-time setup. If you have already finished setup, use an account sync where available or follow the manufacturer’s current instructions for transferring content after setup. For example, you can add the Google Account that stores your contacts to an iPhone and enable Contacts sync. Android transfer availability depends on the phone and method. Google’s iPhone sync instructions; Google’s Android setup guidance.

If expected entries are missing, check that the right account is enabled on the new phone and that you’re viewing its contacts in the Contacts app. Also check the old phone: contacts stored only on the device or on a SIM may need a different method from account-synced contacts. Transfer flows do not guarantee identical handling of every field, label, duplicate, or device-only contact across all models.
