Deliver a book bought from Amazon
- Sign in to the Amazon account used to purchase the book.
- Open Manage Your Content and Devices, then select the Content tab.
- Choose Books from the content-type drop-down.
- Find the book, select Deliver or Remove from Device, choose one or more registered Kindle devices or apps, and confirm the change.
The book is associated with the purchasing account, so use this delivery method rather than treating the purchased title as a freely transferable file. Whether you can download a separate EPUB or PDF depends on the book’s DRM status and Amazon’s eligibility rules.
Send your own EPUB, PDF, or document with Send to Kindle
Send to Kindle can add personal documents to your Kindle library at no additional cost. Amazon lists web upload, email, Kindle apps for iOS and Android, desktop apps for Mac and Windows, and a Chrome extension for sending web content. With the web option, upload a document no larger than 200 MB. Select Add to your library if you want the document available on linked devices rather than only sent to a single device. Formats and layout
Amazon’s Send to Kindle page lists HTML/HTM, RTF, TXT, JPEG/JPG, GIF, PNG, BMP, PDF, and EPUB. Its USB help page also lists DOC and DOCX. Format availability can differ by transfer route and Kindle feature; support for a file does not guarantee identical layout, conversion, or annotation behavior on every model.

Send a file to Kindle by email
- Find the Send to Kindle email address assigned to the compatible Kindle device or app in your Amazon account or Kindle settings.
- In Manage Your Content and Devices, add the address you will send from to the Approved Personal Document Email List.
- Attach supported files to an email addressed to the Kindle’s Send to Kindle address. Amazon currently allows up to 25 attachments in one message, with a total message attachment size of 50 MB or less.
- Connect the Kindle to the internet so the document can be delivered.
If the documents exceed the email size limit, Amazon advises compressing them into a ZIP file. Email transfer requires an approved sender address; an unapproved sender can prevent delivery. Amazon Send to Kindle email help
Copy books or documents over USB
Windows
Connect the Kindle with a USB data cable. Amazon says the device should appear as external storage in File Explorer; use its file system to copy files. If Windows does not recognize it, disconnect and reconnect the cable. Keep file paths below 256 characters.

Mac
Amazon’s Mac instructions use the supplied Kindle USB cable and the Send to Kindle app’s USB File Manager to drag files to or from the Kindle’s Documents folder. Kindle Scribe and Kindle devices released in 2024 require a separate application for Mac USB transfer under Amazon’s guidance; the USB help page describes exceptions for older devices. The Mac USB File Manager has a limit of 2,000 files per USB transfer. Amazon USB transfer help
If the Mac transfer does not connect, close other USB transfer applications, use the File Manager’s connect control, and reconnect the cable. USB copies are local to the device; use Send to Kindle with Add to your library when you want cloud-library access across linked devices.

Understand DRM before moving a purchased book elsewhere
A Kindle purchase is not necessarily a portable ebook file. Amazon KDP says DRM can restrict a book to Kindle apps and devices. Its guidance states that, effective January 20, 2026, verified purchasers can download EPUB and PDF files for qualifying books confirmed as DRM-free. Books published before December 9, 2025, where DRM was not applied, are not automatically included in that new download option. Check the book’s purchase or account options rather than assuming that every Kindle purchase can be copied to another e-reader. Amazon KDP: DRM and book downloads

Fix common Send to Kindle conversion problems
- Password-protected or secured file: Remove password protection or security settings before sending.
- Word document fails to convert: Remove ink drawings and try again.
- Complex document: Large or complex tables can cause conversion problems; simplify the document if necessary.
- Kindle Scribe annotation limitation: Amazon notes that multimedia, mathematical equations, nested footnotes, or linear gradients may not work with certain on-page annotation features. This is a feature-specific limitation, not a blanket statement that those elements fail on every Kindle or in every transfer. Amazon Kindle Scribe document guidance
