Use Samsung Smart Switch to move supported content to your Galaxy tablet. Start Smart Switch on the tablet, choose to receive data, connect to your old device by wireless, compatible cable, iCloud (for iPhone or iPad), or external storage, then review the items found before transferring. What moves depends on the source device and transfer route: Smart Switch does not clone every app, password, or account’s private data.
Before you start
Charge both devices and connect them to Wi-Fi if the chosen route requires it. For a cable transfer, the devices cannot charge through the cable connection, so Samsung advises charging them fully first. Check the ports on both devices before choosing a cable: USB-C-to-USB-C or Lightning-to-USB-C may connect directly when compatible; other combinations may require a USB OTG adapter. Samsung’s Smart Switch transfer guide describes supported connection options and setup.
- Install or update Smart Switch on the old Android device if needed. The app is available on the Galaxy tablet through Settings or the Samsung folder.
- Have credentials ready for accounts whose data is synced online. Smart Switch does not copy data that remains in an external account; that information usually appears after you sign in on the tablet.
- If you are transferring from an iPhone and need messages, turn off iMessage before starting. If iCloud Photos has Optimize Storage enabled, download and keep the originals on the iPhone first if you want Smart Switch to copy those photos from the device.
Samsung’s iPhone guidance explains the iMessage and iCloud Photos checks: transfer data from an iPhone or iPad to a Galaxy device.
Choose a transfer method
| Method | Best suited to | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Wireless | Moving data without a compatible cable, or keeping devices connected to chargers during transfer. | Both devices need Smart Switch for an Android-to-Android transfer. Keep them nearby; Samsung’s US instructions for that workflow specify within four inches. |
| USB cable | Connecting devices directly when the correct cable is available. | Match the cable to both ports. Some combinations need a USB OTG adapter. Devices cannot charge while connected for the transfer. |
| iCloud | Importing supported iPhone or iPad data stored in iCloud. | Sign in to iCloud and complete verification when prompted. The items available differ from a cable import. |
| microSD card or USB OTG storage | Backing up the old device to removable storage, then restoring that backup on the tablet. | Confirm the devices support the storage method and that the storage has enough free space. Some models do not support microSD; a USB card adapter may be needed. |
Wireless is useful when charging during a large transfer matters. Cable can be a straightforward option when the connectors match, but it ties up the devices during the connection. Samsung documents these routes and their setup limits in its Galaxy tablet setup guidance and Smart Switch instructions. No method guarantees a faster result for every device pair.

Transfer from an Android phone or tablet
- On the Galaxy tablet, open Settings and select Accounts and backup > Bring data from old device or open Smart Switch from the Samsung folder. Screen labels can vary by model and software version.
- Choose Receive data, then select Galaxy/Android as the source.
- Choose Wireless or Cable. For wireless, install Smart Switch on the old device, open it, and choose Send from this phone; on the tablet, choose Receive on this phone. Follow the prompts to connect.
- After Smart Switch scans the old device, select Everything, choose available categories, or use Custom to select items individually.
- Start the transfer and leave the devices connected until it finishes. Then check the tablet’s contacts, photos, messages, and other selected categories.
For the wireless Android workflow, Samsung’s US guide specifies keeping devices within four inches. This is a setup instruction for that workflow, not a requirement for cable or iCloud transfers. See Samsung’s step-by-step transfer instructions.
Transfer from an iPhone or iPad
Use a cable
- On the Galaxy tablet, start Smart Switch, choose Receive data, and select iPhone/iPad.
- Connect the devices with a compatible Lightning-to-USB-C or USB-C-to-USB-C cable, as appropriate.
- Unlock the Apple device and approve the Trust prompt if it appears.
- Review the available categories on the Galaxy tablet, select what you want, and begin the transfer.
Import from iCloud
- On the tablet, start Smart Switch, choose to receive data from an iPhone or iPad, and select the iCloud option.
- Sign in to the Apple account and complete any verification steps.
- Select the available data to import and start the transfer.
Use wireless transfer
Samsung also documents wireless transfer from iPhone or iPad. Its Ireland instructions say Smart Switch must be installed on the Apple device for this route. Follow the prompts on both devices, then review and select the scanned content. Available items depend on the route; consult Samsung’s iPhone and iPad transfer guidance for the documented workflows.

Transfer through a microSD card or USB OTG storage
- On the old device, open Smart Switch and choose the backup option for an SD card or USB storage.
- Connect or insert storage with enough free space, then create the backup. Samsung’s USB OTG safety note says the source device should have at least 20% charge before this operation.
- Move the card or USB storage to the Galaxy tablet. Use a compatible card reader or adapter if the tablet has no card slot or its connector differs.
- Open Smart Switch on the tablet, choose the restore option, select the backup, and choose what to restore.
microSD support varies by model, so verify compatibility for both devices before relying on a card. Samsung describes the backup and restore process in its Smart Switch guide.

From Android
Potentially transferable items include contacts, schedules and calendar entries, messages, memos, call logs, clock data, images, DRM-free music and videos, documents, apps, and some settings. Some content is limited to Galaxy-to-Galaxy transfers. App data stored in private storage cannot be backed up, so an app’s internal state or login session may not carry over.
From iPhone or iPad
Depending on the route, supported items can include selected contacts, calendars, notes, call history, bookmarks, photos, DRM-free videos, documents, recommended Android apps, voice memos, Wi-Fi details, and alarms. Messages may be available by cable; Samsung’s iCloud list does not show messages in the same way. Apple apps do not transfer as apps, though Android equivalents may be suggested or downloaded. Passwords and Apple Keychain data do not transfer through this process.

If something is missing
- Contacts or calendar entries: Check whether they were synced to an account, SIM, or work service, then add or sign in to that account on the tablet.
- iPhone messages: Confirm iMessage was turned off before transfer. Messages are route-dependent; Samsung lists them for cable transfer, not in the same way for iCloud import.
- iPhone photos: If iCloud Photos used Optimize Storage, originals may have been stored only in iCloud. Samsung recommends choosing Download and Keep Originals on the iPhone before transferring those photos from the device.
- App progress, logins, or passwords: Smart Switch cannot copy private app data or Apple Keychain passwords. Use the app’s own restore process or sign in again where available.
- Transfer will not connect: Recheck the cable and adapters against both device ports, unlock the source device, approve any trust or permission prompts, and keep both devices powered while the transfer runs.
