To trade directly between Pokémon Ruby and Pokémon Sapphire, connect two Game Boy Advance systems with a Game Boy Advance Game Link Cable. In each game, go upstairs in a Pokémon Center and use the Cable Club trade counter. The GBA Wireless Adapter does not work with these games.
What you need for a Ruby–Sapphire trade
- Two Game Boy Advance systems, with Ruby running on one and Sapphire on the other.
- A Game Boy Advance Game Link Cable connecting the systems. Check that the cable is made for GBA systems; similarly named cables for the original Game Boy may not be compatible.
- In each game, the Pokédex and at least two Pokémon in the party, as listed by this specialist walkthrough.
Use the link cable rather than the GBA Wireless Adapter: the adapter is not compatible with Ruby and Sapphire. The direct method described here uses two Game Boy Advance systems, not Nintendo DS systems. The Cable Club is on the second floor of Pokémon Centers, and link-cable trading also connects Ruby and Sapphire with Emerald, FireRed, and LeafGreen.
How to trade between the games
- On both systems, start the game and make sure each save has the Pokédex and at least two Pokémon in its party.
- Connect the systems with the Game Boy Advance Game Link Cable.
- In each game, enter a Pokémon Center, go upstairs, and speak to the attendant at the middle counter to enter the Cable Club and choose a trade.
- Follow the on-screen prompts. The games will ask you to save; then select the Pokémon you want to offer, review the other player’s offered Pokémon, and confirm the exchange.
Compatibility and alternatives
Trading between different language versions
Ruby and Sapphire have no language restrictions on trading. Restrictions on mixing records between Japanese and non-Japanese games are separate and do not prevent a Pokémon trade.
Trading through a GameCube game
Pokémon Colosseum and Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness can connect to Ruby or Sapphire using a Nintendo GameCube–Game Boy Advance cable. That is a separate workflow through the GameCube game’s Trade Center; it is not needed for a direct trade between the two GBA games. See the game connectivity reference.

Moving Pokémon to a later-generation game
Migrating Pokémon to a Generation IV game is not the same as trading between Ruby and Sapphire. The Pokémon Platinum manual describes migration after obtaining the National Pokédex; once migrated, Pokémon cannot be returned to a GBA game.
