Before handing over an old iPhone, back it up, transfer what you need, then sign out and erase it using the built-in reset process. That protects your data and removes the account lock that could prevent the next owner from activating it. After the phone is ready, compare a trade-in quote with the likely net proceeds and effort of a direct sale.
Back up and transfer your data first
Make a backup and confirm your important information is available on your replacement iPhone or in the backup before erasing the old device. Apple’s preparation steps for selling, giving away, or trading in an iPhone explain how to protect your information before a handoff.
Do not try to prepare the phone by manually deleting photos, contacts, or other synced iCloud content while still signed in. Apple warns that deleting synced content this way can also remove it from iCloud and your other connected devices. Erase the iPhone as a whole instead.
Prepare the iPhone for its next owner
- Unpair an Apple Watch, if applicable. Use the Watch app on the iPhone to unpair it before you move on.
- Sign out of your Apple Account and Apple services. Follow Apple’s instructions for the iOS version installed on the device.
- Erase the iPhone. Open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset, then tap Erase All Content and Settings. Follow the prompts. Apple says this process turns off Find My and Activation Lock, so the next owner can set up the device.
- Handle the eSIM prompt. If the iPhone uses an eSIM and you are selling or trading it in, choose the option to erase the eSIM profile when prompted. Coordinate any service transfer or cancellation with your carrier; erasing the phone does not itself settle your cellular account.
- Remove it from your trusted devices. Check your Apple Account’s trusted-device list and remove the old iPhone once it is no longer yours.
- Deregister iMessage if switching to a non-Apple phone. This helps ensure messages sent to your number can reach your new device.
Apple’s iPhone user guide to erasing an iPhone gives the reset path. If you no longer have the phone, Apple’s preparation article advises contacting the new owner to erase it, removing it from your trusted-device list, changing your Apple Account password, and deregistering iMessage if you have moved to a non-Apple phone.

Check the phone before choosing a trade-in
If considering an Apple trade-in, look under Settings > General > About for Parts and Service History. Apple says an item marked Finish Repair must be addressed before the device can be traded in. For a mail-in trade-in, follow the instructions included with the supplied kit and do not send accessories Apple says it will not return.
Apple Trade In estimates are conditional. Under Apple’s U.S. Trade In terms, the vendor may revise the original quote if inspection differs from your description, Find My iPhone has not been removed, or the device is not received within 14 days of delivery of the trade-in box. The 14-day period is a condition in the terms, not a general delivery guarantee.

Compare a trade-in with a direct sale
A trade-in is a more straightforward route: you submit the device for an offer and follow the provider’s return or shipping instructions. A direct marketplace sale puts more of the work on you, including preparing a listing and communicating with a buyer. Swappa describes its service as user-to-user, with listing review and seller fees when an item sells; see its seller guidance.

There is no universally best-paying route established here. Compare a current trade-in offer with comparable completed sales for the same model, storage capacity, condition, and region, then account for fees and the time and effort of a direct sale.

Make the handoff safely
- Finish the backup, sign-out, and erase before shipping or meeting a buyer; do not hand over a phone that remains tied to your Apple Account.
- For a marketplace listing, describe the condition honestly and share an IMEI only privately when there is a good reason, such as a buyer checking carrier compatibility.
- For an in-person sale, choose a cautious public handoff and complete the reset before transferring the device. Local guidance on suitable exchange locations varies, so check official advice for your area.
