For historical levels, follow its Historical Inventory link to the Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) monthly table and download the series history.
Check the current SPR inventory on the DOE site
- Open the DOE SPR Quick Facts page.
- Select Current inventory to view DOE’s current inventory destination.
- Read the date attached to the displayed inventory and record it with the barrel figure. A level without an as-of date can be misleading because inventory changes over time.
For example, DOE’s site-by-site inventory table dated August 20, 2026, reported a total of 294.1 million barrels across Bayou Choctaw, Big Hill, Bryan Mound, and West Hackberry. Treat that as an August 20 snapshot, not as a live figure.
Find historical SPR inventory in EIA data
- On DOE’s Quick Facts page, select Historical Inventory.
- On the EIA table, use Download Series History to obtain the historical data.
- Compare observations by their reported dates. EIA’s cited table is monthly, with stocks reported as of the last day of each month—not daily or weekly.
The EIA table showed a September 30, 2026 release date when checked. That is the table’s displayed release date; individual inventory observations are month-end values.
Choose the right official source for the question

Keep inventory separate from other SPR measures
Inventory is the oil currently held
Inventory is a quantity of petroleum in the reserve, expressed in barrels. DOE’s site table is a dated stock snapshot. A separate DOE import-protection note uses 411 million barrels as of December 31, 2025; that figure is not the same snapshot as the 294.1-million-barrel site table dated August 20, 2026.

Capacity is not inventory
DOE lists 714 million barrels of authorized storage capacity. This is a capacity figure, not the amount of oil currently in the reserve.
Drawdown capability is not an instant delivery promise
DOE lists a maximum nominal drawdown capability of 4.4 million barrels per day. Its FAQ says deliveries could begin within 13 days after an emergency sale announcement. These describe operational capability and timing, not current inventory or a guarantee that a particular amount will be delivered on a given day.

Days of import protection is a calculated ratio
DOE explains that days of import protection are calculated by dividing SPR inventory by EIA-reported net petroleum imports per day. It is a derived measure, not another stock count; it can change when either the inventory or the import rate changes.
Account for new announcements without mistaking them for inventory
On September 29, 2026, DOE announced an exchange solicitation for up to 40 million barrels, with deliveries under awarded exchanges scheduled for November and December 2026. An exchange announcement is operational context, not a measurement of barrels currently held. To find the resulting inventory, check a later dated DOE snapshot or EIA observation.

Use DOE reports for program context
DOE’s Reports to Congress provide slower-moving background on physical capacity, petroleum type and quantity, withdrawal and distribution capability, acquisition history and costs, and planned upgrades or maintenance. They are useful for understanding the program, but they are not a substitute for the current-inventory page or EIA’s dated historical series.
