You can track activity on a government-linked crypto address by starting with an official case record, checking the address or transaction it identifies in the relevant blockchain explorer, and recording what the ledger shows at a specific time. The chain can show transfers and balances; it cannot, by itself, prove who controls an address, whether funds are in government custody, or whether they have been legally forfeited.

Start with an official case or forfeiture notice

Choose a specific seizure, forfeiture, or other asset event before looking for a wallet. Begin with an announcement or record from the Department of Justice (DOJ), a U.S. Attorney’s Office, the FBI, the U.S. Marshals Service (USMS), or another relevant agency. Record the agency, publication date, case name or number, asset and network, and the legal stage described.

Forfeiture.gov can help locate public federal notices. Its search supports keywords and filters including asset type, description, seizure dates, court case number, and asset ID. The site says it lists pending federal forfeiture notices; it is a discovery tool, not a live or comprehensive inventory of government-held crypto. Reconcile a notice with the related case record: Forfeiture.gov.

Find the address or transaction named in the record

Search the official announcement, complaint, court filing, or other case document for a wallet address, transaction hash, amount, or account of how investigators traced the funds. Use only the address-level evidence the record actually provides. If the public record does not identify an address, do not treat a third-party analytics label as an established government wallet; clearly identify the label’s publisher and its limits.

The DOJ’s June 7, 2021, DarkSide ransomware announcement offers a case example: investigators followed Bitcoin ledger transfers to an address for which the FBI held the private key. DOJ said authorities seized 63.7 bitcoin in the matter. That amount describes the seizure announced in that case, not a current government-wide balance. See the DOJ DarkSide seizure announcement.

Inspect the address on the correct blockchain

Once an official record supplies an address or transaction, use a public blockchain explorer that supports that asset and network. Check that the address and network match the case record; similar-looking addresses on different networks are not interchangeable. For each observation, capture:

A blockchain records transactions associated with addresses. It does not name the person or agency behind an address. A crypto wallet is software that manages keys and can use multiple addresses, so one address or balance is not necessarily a full wallet or entity inventory.

Separate ledger observations from provider labels

Analytics providers may group addresses under an entity name such as “U.S. Government.” Treat that as the provider’s attribution, not as a government-certified identity or a raw blockchain fact. Arkham publishes U.S. Government labels and case examples; its 2026 holdings overview estimates approximately 325,000 BTC attributed to the U.S. Government and says its grouping includes wallets linked to federal agencies regardless of legal status. This is Arkham’s estimate under its definition, not an official government total: Arkham’s U.S. Government holdings overview.

When relying on a provider label, name the provider and corroborate important addresses against case documents. Compare whether an address appears in a primary agency or court record, whether the figure is an explorer observation or a vendor’s entity aggregation, when it was observed, what networks it covers, and whether the cited assets are seized, finally forfeited, or merely associated with a provider-defined entity.

Describe the legal status precisely

Seizure, forfeiture, custody, and eventual sale or other disposition are distinct. A seizure announcement says authorities took control under legal process; it does not, by itself, establish final forfeiture or prove the assets remain in custody. A forfeiture complaint may allege that property should be forfeited. A court’s final forfeiture order is a separate later legal event. Check the current docket or agency statement before describing an asset as finally forfeited or still held.

The difference is visible in two DOJ examples. The 2020 Silk Road release described a civil forfeiture complaint and allegations, not a final order: DOJ’s Silk Road complaint announcement. By contrast, DOJ’s 2026 Helix announcement reported that a court entered a final order of forfeiture. Its figure of 354,468 bitcoin refers to bitcoin Helix processed on behalf of customers, not government holdings: DOJ’s Helix forfeiture announcement.

Keep a dated tracking ledger

A small case ledger makes it possible to distinguish what the chain showed from what a source said about the address. Include the source and observation time for each entry; update observations rather than overwriting old ones.

  • Address or transaction hash identified in the record.
  • Block and time, amount and unit, and transfer direction.
  • Attribution source: case record, explorer observation, or named analytics provider.
  • Observation timestamp, observed balance, and transfers since the prior check.
  • Legal stage and any unresolved uncertainty.

USMS Office of Inspector General reporting has described limitations in the agency’s CATS system for recording cryptocurrency type, valuation changes, fees, and forks, with staff supplementing the system using spreadsheets. That finding is a reason to preserve clear, dated provenance in your own tracking; it is not evidence that any particular public address is currently held by the government. See the USMS cryptocurrency audit.

Understand what on-chain tracking cannot establish

  • A displayed balance is a snapshot. It describes the address at the explorer’s observation time, not necessarily an agency’s current custody or legal inventory.
  • There is no established official portfolio-wide live balance here. Any aggregate should be attributed to the named provider, its definition, and its observation date—not presented as an official total.
  • Tracing can be incomplete or complicated. Transfers to custodial services, address reuse, privacy techniques, and cross-chain activity can make a simple address lookup insufficient. The Silk Road complaint’s description of a tumbler illustrates why investigators may need evidence beyond a public ledger.
  • Historical provider figures are not current balances. Treat dated analytics announcements as historical snapshots unless a provider supplies a newer, clearly defined observation.

The practical standard is provenance: identify the official case record, quote only the address-level evidence it supports, document the explorer observation and timestamp, and label any analytics attribution as a provider’s claim. That lets readers verify the transaction trail without confusing visible blockchain activity with identity, legal status, or present custody.
