Use Google Search Console to see which countries generate Google Search impressions and clicks. Then use Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to see what visitors from those countries do after they land. The two tools answer different questions, so keep them separate until you have a reason to combine them. Country is only a reporting dimension. It tells you where activity came from. It does not tell you whether the right localized page, language, or market setup is behind it.

Step 1: Measure Google Search visibility by country in Search Console

Open the Search results Performance report. It shows four metrics:

  • Clicks: visits from Google Search results to your site.
  • Impressions: how often your pages appeared in results.
  • CTR: clicks divided by impressions.
  • Average position: a directional visibility measure. It is an average, not a promise that users saw a fixed rank. Read it next to queries, pages, and impressions.

Group the results by country, then pick a market and inspect its queries and pages. Search Console supports both country comparison and date comparison (Google Search Console Help, “How are you performing on Google?” and “Performance report (Search results)”).

These numbers describe Google Search only. They do not cover other search engines and are not total visits to your site.

Make the comparison fair

  • Use identical date ranges, such as the last 3 months against the previous 3 months.
  • Keep the same page or property scope in every comparison.
  • Split by device category where mobile and desktop behavior differ between markets.

Interpret what you see

  • High impressions with low clicks in one country can mean the result is not appealing or relevant there. Check the query mix and which URL is shown.
  • A strong average position built on a few queries is a different situation from the same position across many queries. Look at the queries before concluding anything.
  • Compare each market with its own baseline and goals. Google publishes no universal international benchmark, so avoid one.

Step 2: Check that the intended local page is the one that appears

This is the check that country-level numbers cannot do for you. For each market, filter by country and open the Pages view. Ask whether the URL you built for that audience is the one receiving impressions and clicks.

If a different locale’s page dominates, the cause is usually setup, not demand. Check these points, based on Google Search Central’s guidance on multi-regional and multilingual sites:

  • Each locale variant should have its own distinct, crawlable URL.
  • Describe the language and region relationship between variants with hreflang annotations or in sitemaps.
  • Avoid locale-adaptive delivery, where the same URL changes content by visitor. Google says this can make some versions harder to crawl or index. It also says IP analysis is difficult and unreliable for adapting content.

Do not use the retired country setting

Google’s documentation states: “The International Targeting report has been deprecated.” Its Search Console country-targeting feature is no longer supported, while hreflang remains supported. Guides that tell you to set a target country in Search Console are out of date. Use URL structure and hreflang instead.

Step 3: Measure on-site behavior by country in GA4

Search Console stops at the click. GA4 shows what happens next, provided your tagging and key events are set up correctly. Its sessions, engagement, and key events are not interchangeable with Search Console clicks.

GA4’s traffic-source dimensions have user, session, and event scopes. To ask what brought a visit, use the session scope, for example the session default channel group filtered to Organic Search. Break that down by the Country dimension. Then look at engagement and the key events that matter to each market, such as sign-ups, purchases, or lead forms.

Organic Search in GA4 includes all search engines, not only Google. Expect its totals to differ from Search Console for that reason as well as the others covered below.

Step 4: Optionally link Search Console and GA4

If you want landing-page search data and analytics data in one place, link the correct Search Console property to your GA4 web data stream. The integrated Google Organic Search Traffic report associates landing pages with both sets of measures. It can be broken down by country and device.

  • Publishing: the Search Console report collection is unpublished by default in GA4. An editor or administrator may need to publish it.
  • Dimensions: the Queries report drills down by Search Console dimensions, not arbitrary Analytics dimensions. Integrated Search Console measures work with a restricted set of dimensions.
  • No time series: according to Google’s integration help, these reports do not provide time-series charts.
  • Retention and delay: Search Console data is kept for up to 16 months. It can take up to 48 hours to appear in Analytics after Search Console collects it.

Because of the missing trend charts and the 16-month limit, export or preserve a consistent series if you need long-term or cross-system reporting. Search Console’s Performance report offers export options.

Step 5: Compare the two tools correctly

Google’s guidance on using Search Console and Analytics together recommends matching country and device filters when you compare them. Also match date windows and page scope. The table shows which tool answers which market question.

Question for a market Best source What to read
Are we visible on Google there? Search Console Impressions, average position, query mix
Does the result earn clicks? Search Console Clicks and CTR by page and query
Is the intended local URL showing? Search Console, filtered by country, Pages view Which URLs get impressions and clicks
Do organic visitors engage or convert? GA4 Session-scoped organic traffic by country, engagement, key events
Landing page search and behavior together? Linked integration Google Organic Search Traffic report by country and device

Step 6: Account for data quirks before calling something an error

  • The newest Search Console data can be preliminary, so do not treat the last few days as final.
  • Chart and table totals can differ because of aggregation differences. Small gaps do not by themselves indicate a tracking fault.
  • Search Console clicks and GA4 sessions will not match. They are measured differently, and GA4 depends on your tagging.

Step 7: Build a repeatable review routine

  1. Record a baseline for each priority country: clicks, impressions, CTR, top pages, top queries, and GA4 engagement and key events.
  2. Review on a fixed cadence, such as monthly, using the same date logic each time. Google does not prescribe a schedule or target, so pick one that fits how quickly your markets change.
  3. Annotate changes to localized URLs, content, technical setup, hreflang, and local campaigns so that a trend has context.
  4. Export the figures regularly so history survives beyond the 16-month window.
  5. When a country moves, check the local page and hreflang setup first. Then check query mix and device split.

Country data cannot prove that localization caused a change. Treat shifts as signals to investigate, not as conclusions. If you need coverage beyond Google Search or scheduled multi-market reporting, a third-party rank tracker or reporting tool may fill the gap. Verify what a given tool actually covers before you rely on it.
