Use Google Search Console to measure visibility on Google News, and your site’s existing analytics to examine visits to article pages. The tools report different things: Search Console counts Google News clicks, impressions and click-through rate, while website analytics records on-site activity and may identify Google News referrals from the HTTP referrer.
Which tools measure Google News traffic?
Use the tools together, but keep their roles separate:
- Google News Performance in Search Console: Measures how your property’s content performs on Google News surfaces, including news.google.com and the Google News apps on Android and iOS. It reports clicks, impressions and average CTR.
- Your website analytics: Measures activity on your site, such as article-page visits and sessions. Google documents
news.google.comandnews.url.google.comas referrers from the Google News app and browsers. Whether a particular visit is attributed to those sources depends on the referrer information available to your analytics implementation.
Google Search’s News tab is a separate surface. To measure it, use Search Console’s Search Performance report and set Search type to News; do not add those results to Google News app and site metrics without labeling the different surfaces.
How to check Google News visibility in Search Console
- Open Search Console and select the verified property for your site.
- Open the Google News Performance report. Review clicks, impressions and average CTR.
- Use the available page and country breakdowns or filters to investigate particular articles and audiences. Adjust the date and time granularity to suit the question: the 24-hour view offers hourly data, daily view can help investigate a spike, and weekly or monthly views make broader trends easier to see.
- For Google Search’s News tab, open Search Performance and select Search type = News. Keep this report’s results distinct from Google News Performance.
The Google News report’s click is a click from Google News that lands on your property. An impression is counted when a link to your site is scrolled into view. Moving away from and back to that link, or paging away and back, does not count a second impression during the same session. Average CTR is clicks divided by impressions.

How to find Google News referrals in website analytics
In your analytics tool, review visits or sessions for article pages and examine the HTTP referrer or referral-source dimension available in your implementation. Look for news.google.com and news.url.google.com, the referrers Google identifies for traffic from Google News apps and browsers. Then analyze the article-page activity using the metrics your analytics tool records.
A visit may not be identifiable as a Google News referral if the referrer is unavailable or your analytics implementation attributes it differently. Google recommends publishers use their own on-page analytics for further analysis of standard HTML and AMP articles; the Search Console report remains the source for Google News visibility metrics.

How to compare the reports without misleading yourself
Compare trends and article URLs, not just headline totals. Search Console clicks and analytics sessions are different measurements: they come from different systems, cover different events, and need not match one for one. Check these factors when a comparison looks surprising:
- Surface: Confirm whether you are looking at Google News app/site data or Search Performance filtered to Search type = News.
- URL attribution: Search Console assigns page metrics to the canonical URL, which may differ from the exact URL a visitor landed on. Duplicate, mobile and desktop URLs can therefore be grouped under one canonical page.
- Date and time zone: Google News report daily dates use Pacific Time. The 24-hour view uses your browser’s local time zone. Google also notes that Search Console and Analytics time-zone settings can differ.
- Processing delay: Google News report data normally becomes available after two to three days. The default view covers the last three months; recent data can be preliminary, so avoid treating it as final.
- What the report excludes: Swipes between stories inside the Android and iOS apps and notifications are not counted as clicks or impressions in the report.
- Chart and table totals: Search Console charts and tables can differ because tables may be limited or truncated and because totals may be grouped differently.
For a useful comparison, align the date range and canonical article URLs, distinguish the two Google surfaces, and look for direction and timing of changes. Do not treat a difference between clicks and sessions by itself as proof that either system is broken.

What changed in Publisher Center
Google said publication pages in Google News transitioned to automatically generated pages in March 2025. Its announcement also described the removal of Publisher Center functionality for feed-rendered in-app reads, including custom Analytics tracking IDs and third-party tracking pixels. Google said the change did not affect Search Console’s Google News reports and pointed publishers to their existing website analytics for traffic measurement. A new manual publication-page setup or feed-based in-app rendering is not required for the workflow above.

The reports describe performance on the documented Google News and Search surfaces; they do not establish total exposure across every possible Google surface or explain why an individual article did or did not appear. Analytics tracking measures and analyzes visits; it does not control inclusion or ranking. Google describes News ranking as algorithmic, with factors including relevance, prominence, authoritativeness, freshness, usability, location and language.
