To track German industrial production and construction, start with Destatis and select the series that matches the activity you mean. Use seasonally and calendar-adjusted data to assess month-to-month movement; use unadjusted data when original levels or year-on-year comparisons matter. Destatis’ Economic Dashboard and GENESIS-Online are the durable access routes: its Short-term indicators index is scheduled to stop being updated from October 2026 and be deactivated at the beginning of 2027, although the data remain available elsewhere.

How do I track German industrial production?

Use the monthly production index from Germany’s Federal Statistical Office, Destatis. It measures price-adjusted output. Be precise about scope: the broad production-sector measure covers mining and quarrying, manufacturing, energy and construction. If you mean industrial production in the narrower sense, select the industry-specific series rather than treating the all-sector production total as manufacturing alone. Destatis explains the output measures on its Output background page.

Find the official series

  1. Start at Destatis. Use the Economic Dashboard or GENESIS-Online to locate and download German official data. The Destatis Short-term indicators open-data index lists available production-industry and construction indicators, but it is being phased out; use the Dashboard or GENESIS-Online as your main route.
  2. Choose the right scope. Select an industry series for industrial production, a broad production-sector series when you want the wider measure, or a construction-specific series for building activity.
  3. Record the series and vintage. Note the series name, reference month, adjustment type, release or access date, and whether the latest observation is provisional. This makes later revisions visible rather than silently changing the basis of your comparison.

Where can I find Germany’s construction output data?

For realized construction activity, use the construction production index. It can be broken down into building construction, civil engineering and specialised construction activities. The Bundesbank’s production-sector series listing, dated 7 September 2026, identifies construction-only and more detailed construction series, with CSV and SDMX-ML 2.1 download options.

Destatis’ construction indicators also include orders received, orders on hand, building permits, employment and turnover. These help explain the pipeline or conditions around construction, but they do not measure the same thing as completed monthly output. Destatis provides topic information on its Short-term indicators page.

Use Eurostat for cross-country comparisons

Eurostat’s construction production index covers NACE section F and measures monthly price-adjusted output. Its construction production overview states a 2021=100 index base (overview published 18 September 2026). For comparisons between Germany and other EU countries, align the series, adjustment and base year rather than comparing values from unlike versions.

The index is an estimate of activity, not a count of projects. Eurostat notes that monthly construction volume value added is not directly observable and must be approximated, for example using deflated gross production or inputs such as labour and raw materials.

Should I use seasonally adjusted or unadjusted figures?

Series form Best use What to watch
Seasonally and calendar-adjusted Assessing month-to-month movement where this form is available. Label the adjustment and compare against the same form of the series.
Calendar-adjusted Use when a series provides this form but not seasonal and calendar adjustment, or when calendar effects are the adjustment relevant to the analysis. Do not describe it as seasonally adjusted.
Unadjusted Original reported levels or comparisons such as year-on-year change. Seasonal patterns and calendar effects remain; do not compare raw values directly with adjusted values.

For short-run monthly momentum, prefer the seasonally and calendar-adjusted observation when available. Monthly activity can follow seasonal patterns and calendar effects, so the raw series may obscure the movement you are trying to assess. Some series are offered in multiple forms, while others may have only calendar adjustment. Destatis’ building-construction table, for example, displayed X13 JDemetra+ and BV 4.1 adjusted series in a snapshot dated 8 June 2026; it also reported a 2021=100 base. Those details describe that dated table presentation, not a current observation. See the Destatis production index in building construction table for the series.

How should I interpret new readings and revisions?

Do not assume the latest number is final. The Bundesbank says, “The latest data are usually provisional and contain estimates.” Historical values can also be revised. When citing a particular movement, retain its reference month and data vintage, and check the provisional or revision status shown with the series.

Keep related indicators separate in your analysis. The production index describes realized output; orders received and building permits can indicate future activity, while employment, actual hours worked and turnover provide supporting context. For industry, productivity and labour-cost indices can add context. The Bundesbank’s Economic activity and prices listings include these related measures. Each answers a different question, so do not combine their changes into a single output measure.

Which source should I use for each task?

Need Best starting point Why
German national production or construction indicator Destatis Economic Dashboard or GENESIS-Online National official statistics and downloadable records; the Short-term indicators index is a guide to series availability but is being deactivated.
Series listing and machine-readable downloads Bundesbank Statistics Portal Its listing distinguishes production-sector, construction and construction-segment series and provides CSV and SDMX-ML 2.1 options.
Germany versus EU countries Eurostat short-term business statistics Common statistical framework for comparison; align series scope, adjustment and base year.

Release dates can change. Check the current Destatis or Bundesbank release calendar rather than assuming a fixed publication date for an individual indicator.
