Track AI search visibility with official reports where available, then use a fixed set of prompts to monitor services those reports do not cover. Keep impressions, brand mentions, citations, traffic, and conversions separate: they measure different outcomes, and a change in visibility alone does not prove that a site edit caused it.
Choose what you want to track
“AI visibility” can mean several things. Decide which outcome matters before choosing a report or building a spreadsheet.
- Page appearances or impressions: whether and how often pages appear in supported AI search features.
- Brand mentions: whether an answer names your brand, whether or not it links to your site.
- Citations: whether an answer links to your domain, and which exact page it cites.
- Traffic and conversions: whether visibility is followed by site visits or business outcomes. Measure these in your analytics tools rather than treating a mention as a visit.
Do not combine these into one “AI ranking” score. A brand mention is not a citation, and a citation is not evidence of a click or conversion.
Use official reports for Google and Bing
Google Search Console
Google Search Console has a dedicated generative AI performance report for Google Search, covering AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google announced the report on June 3, 2026, and said the rollout reached websites worldwide by August 31, 2026. See Google’s announcement and the report documentation.

Use the report to review impressions by page, country, date, and device; device is available for Search results. Export the data periodically if you want to preserve a longitudinal record. Interpret the report with its stated limits in mind:
- The newest data may be preliminary.
- The ordinary Search performance report’s row and time-period limits apply.
- Chart and table totals can differ because they aggregate data differently.
- The date dimension uses Pacific Time.
Bing Webmaster Tools
Bing Webmaster Tools’ AI Performance report shows cited pages, visibility trends, and grounding queries for AI-generated answers across Copilot and partner experiences. Review it for page-level citations and trend context; its trend data is observational and does not establish the effect of a particular content edit, model change, or platform update. Monitor other AI services with a consistent prompt set
Google’s report covers Google Search features, and Bing’s covers its documented Copilot and partner experiences. They do not provide one universal view across every AI answer service. For platforms that matter to your audience but lack suitable reporting, run the same realistic prompts on a schedule and preserve the individual observations.
Build the prompt set
Use questions drawn from real audience tasks, such as informational queries, comparisons, troubleshooting, and product or service selection where relevant. Keep each prompt’s wording and the platform constant between runs. If you add, remove, or revise prompts, give the set a new version label; changing the mix can shift an aggregate rate even when the answers to unchanged prompts do not.

Log one observation per prompt and platform
A spreadsheet is enough to start. Include these fields so a later comparison is interpretable:
- Date, platform, prompt, and prompt-set version
- Whether your brand or site is mentioned, with enough answer context to explain the mark
- Whether a citation appears and whether your domain is among the citations
- The exact cited URL or URLs—not just the domain
- Other domains that are frequently cited
- Relevant site edit date and changed URL
- Notes about changed answers, platform changes, or unusual results
A site can be cited at a different URL from the page you expected, so preserve URL-level details. A paid monitoring platform may reduce collection work or offer historical trends and benchmarking, but check what it actually measures and which platforms it covers; it should not replace a clear definition of the metric.

Calculate rates without hiding the underlying observations
- Mention rate: prompts where the brand is named divided by prompts checked.
- Citation rate: prompts where your domain is linked divided by prompts checked.
Report the prompt set, platform, and date range with each rate. Keep the underlying rows because one summary number can conceal inconsistent answers or a change in the prompt mix.
Set a review cadence and investigate changes carefully
Repeated runs are more useful than a one-off answer. An industry workflow suggests daily scans for anomaly detection and weekly rollups for trends; treat that as a suggested operating cadence, not a requirement from Google or Bing. A smaller team may use a weekly or monthly schedule that it can sustain, while retaining individual observations.

- Compare like with like. Check the same platform, prompts, prompt-set version, and reporting dimensions across periods.
- Check the exact URL. Determine whether the same page is cited, another page on your domain has replaced it, or the citation has disappeared.
- Record relevant changes. Note the edit date and URL, along with any known platform or answer changes.
- Look for corroboration. Compare prompt observations with available Google or Bing reporting and, if the business question concerns outcomes, with analytics data for traffic and conversions.
- Allow for processing time. Google says crawling can take “anywhere from several days to several months,” depending on how often its systems determine a page needs refreshing. A same-day before-and-after check may be too early to assess a change. See Google’s guidance on AI features and your website.
A citation change occurring after an edit is a correlation, not proof of causation. Bing explicitly cautions that its trend observations do not determine the impact of an individual change. Use careful language in reports: describe what changed, when, and on which platform, but do not attribute the result to a site edit without evidence that can support that conclusion.

Before choosing a paid service, check whether it answers the question you actually have. Compare platform coverage, whether it measures mentions, citations, impressions, or traffic, whether its data is page-, URL-, or prompt-level, its historical and export support, geographic or device breakdowns, and whether it reports official platform data or sampled observations.

Troubleshoot misleading or missing signals
- A prompt suddenly shows no citation: rerun the same prompt on the same platform and retain the answer. Then check whether another URL on your domain appears and whether official reporting shows a corresponding trend.
- Your aggregate rate changed after adding prompts: compare only the prompts shared by both prompt-set versions, or report the versions separately. A changed prompt mix can create a rate shift.
- Google and Bing totals do not match: they cover different platforms and measures, so treat them as separate views rather than expecting a shared total.
- A site edit has not changed the result immediately: retain the revision date and check again over time; Google’s stated crawl and processing window ranges from several days to several months.
- A citation increase appears to follow an edit: describe the timing but do not claim the edit caused it based on timing alone. Check prompt consistency, URLs, and other available signals.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a brand mention count as an AI search citation?
No. A mention names the brand; a citation links to a source. Track them separately.
Can these reports show whether AI visibility produced sales?
They do not establish conversions by themselves. Pair visibility reporting with analytics for visits and conversion outcomes.
