To track a Bitcoin or BNB Smart Chain transfer, look up its public address or transaction ID on an explorer for the network that carried it. Use a transaction ID or hash to check one transfer; search an address to see activity associated with it. Never enter a seed phrase or private key into an explorer.

Choose the right network and lookup method

First identify the network used to send the funds. A token name or familiar-looking address does not prove which chain carried a transfer. Bitcoin activity belongs in a Bitcoin explorer; a BNB Smart Chain (BSC) transaction belongs in a BSC explorer. Other networks, including opBNB, have separate explorers.

For BSC, BNB Chain’s configuration documentation lists mainnet as Chain ID 56 and links to BscScan. BSC testnet is Chain ID 97 and uses a separate explorer. See BNB Chain’s wallet configuration before choosing a network.

  • One transfer: Search its transaction ID on Bitcoin or its transaction hash on BSC.
  • Address activity: Search the public address to see transactions associated with it.

An explorer’s address view is not necessarily the same as a wallet app’s history. For example, Bitcoin Core’s listtransactions command returns recent transactions associated with that wallet, while Mempool.space documents address-history lookups. Bitcoin Core documents the command in its version 26.0 RPC reference.

Track a Bitcoin transaction

  1. Copy a public identifier. From your wallet or transfer record, copy the Bitcoin address or transaction ID. Do not copy recovery words or a private key.
  2. Open a Bitcoin explorer. For example, use Mempool.space. Search the address to inspect associated activity, or search the transaction ID to inspect one transfer.
  3. Check whether it is confirmed. A transaction shown in the mempool is unconfirmed; it is not yet part of confirmed history. Mempool.space documents separate endpoints for unconfirmed address activity and confirmed address history. Its confirmed-history results can be paginated, so a long history may require additional pages. See the Mempool.space REST API documentation.
  4. Compare the transaction details. Check the recipient or output, amount, fee, and status against the sending wallet or transfer record. If you already use Bitcoin Core, its gettransaction RPC can return details for a transaction known to that wallet; it is not a general lookup for arbitrary transactions. See the version 27.0 RPC reference.

Track a BNB Smart Chain transaction

  1. Confirm which chain was used. Check the sending wallet or exchange withdrawal record for the network. Do not assume a BNB-branded token or an address format identifies the chain.
  2. Open the matching explorer. For BSC mainnet, use BscScan at bscscan.com. BSC testnet and other BNB Chain networks use different explorers.
  3. Search the transaction hash or address. Use the hash for a particular transfer, or search the public address to inspect related activity.
  4. Check success and destination. Verify the transaction succeeded and that the recipient address and token match the intended transfer. BNB Chain’s token troubleshooting FAQ recommends checking the transaction and recipient when tokens do not appear.
  5. Check the receiving wallet’s network and token display. If the explorer shows the transfer but the wallet does not show the token, make sure the wallet is set to the network where the funds were sent and that it supports or displays that token. A wallet display issue and an on-chain transfer are different questions.

Interpret status and finality carefully

On Bitcoin, distinguish a mempool transaction from one in confirmed history. A mempool listing means the transaction has been broadcast but is not confirmed; do not describe it as settled.

On BNB Chain, status and finality terminology is network-specific. BNB Chain’s developer documentation describes probabilistic and economic finality, rather than establishing one confirmation threshold that applies to every use case. An exchange or recipient may also apply its own crediting policy. See BNB Chain’s BSC API and finality documentation.

Troubleshoot missing or incomplete history

  • No result: Check the copied address or ID/hash for errors, then confirm you selected the network that actually carried the transfer.
  • The transfer appears, but the funds are missing: Check transaction success, recipient, token, and network. If these match, check the receiving wallet’s network selection and token support or display.
  • The wallet shows less activity than the explorer: Wallet history may be limited to activity the wallet recognizes. Bitcoin Core’s documented list command, for instance, is wallet-scoped; an explorer can provide address-associated history.
  • The Bitcoin transfer is pending: Check whether it is still in the mempool or has entered confirmed history. A pending entry is not a confirmation.
  • You may have used a different chain: BSC, opBNB, and other networks have distinct configurations and explorers. Look up the transfer on the chain named in the sending record.

Understand the privacy and security trade-offs

Blockchain transactions and addresses are public, but a public address alone does not establish the identity of its owner. When you query an address through a third-party explorer, that service may learn which address you looked up. Bitcoin Core’s privacy documentation explains that a wallet querying a server can reveal addresses to that server; see Bitcoin Core’s privacy overview.

For an ordinary explorer lookup, use only public information such as an address or transaction ID/hash. Never provide a seed phrase or private key to an explorer, wallet support contact, or anyone offering to trace funds. The BNB Chain FAQ and Mempool.space lookup documentation describe searches using public identifiers, not recovery credentials.
