Use an unlisted test live stream: YouTube says unlisted live streams do not send notifications. Set up Live Redirect on the test stream in YouTube Studio, then end it and check what an observing viewer sees. YouTube does not explicitly guarantee that every Redirect scenario works identically with an unlisted source, so verify the controls and destination for your particular setup before relying on the test.
Why unlisted is the best low-notification test
YouTube’s notification guidance says, “It’s not possible to disable public live stream video notifications. However, unlisted live streams will not send notifications.” YouTube Help: Skip sending upload notifications
That makes unlisted the documented choice for testing without notifying subscribers. Public is not a reliable silent-test setting: creators cannot switch off public live-stream video notifications, even though whether an individual subscriber receives one depends on their settings and other platform factors.

Visibility settings and notification behavior are described in YouTube Help on live-stream settings and YouTube Help on video privacy. Unlisted is not private: keep the test link limited to the intended viewers.

What you need before setting up the test
- A YouTube channel eligible to send Live Redirects. YouTube Help currently says the sending creator needs more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes. This requirement is for sending a redirect, not receiving one.
- A destination that you control or have permission to use: an upcoming Premiere or an eligible live stream. If the destination is on another channel, that channel must allow your channel to redirect to it.
- A test viewer who can open the unlisted source link and observe what happens after the source ends. YouTube describes the redirect as occurring after the source event ends; there is no documented preview simulator.
For another channel’s redirect permissions, the recipient can allow channels it subscribes to, all channels, or specific approved channels. YouTube states that the manually approved list supports up to 100 channels. Check the current YouTube Live Redirect requirements and settings; Studio options can depend on eligibility and destination permissions.
Set up and run an unlisted Live Redirect test
- Create or choose a short source live stream. In YouTube Studio, create a live stream or select an upcoming one. Set its visibility to Unlisted before starting. YouTube supports public, private, and unlisted stream privacy settings and recommends a test stream; see YouTube Help on test streaming.
- Prepare the destination. Choose an upcoming Premiere or an appropriate live stream. If it belongs to another channel, ask that channel to permit your channel to redirect. Confirm it is available to select in the source stream’s Redirect menu.
- Add the redirect to the source event. In YouTube Studio, go to Content > Live, open the source stream with Edit, then choose Customization > Redirect > Add. Select the destination and save the change.
- Start the source and have a viewer join. Share the unlisted URL only with the test participant. Confirm they can watch the source stream before ending it.
- End the source stream and observe the result. The viewer should remain on the source watch page while YouTube reloads or transitions to the destination. Allow a few seconds; autoplay settings can affect what the viewer sees. The redirect applies when the source event ends, not as a preview while it is running.
The Studio path and redirect behavior are documented in YouTube Help: Live Redirect. The same article advises allowing a short reload interval after the source ends.

If Redirect or the destination is missing
- Redirect controls are absent: verify the sending channel has more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes. Then check that you are editing the intended upcoming source stream in Studio.
- The destination does not appear: confirm it is an eligible Premiere or live stream, is available for selection, and—if hosted on another channel—that channel permits your source channel.
- The other channel’s permission mode is unexpected: subscription visibility can affect the recipient’s default permission mode. Ask the destination channel to check its redirect settings directly and explicitly allow your channel if needed.
- The viewer does not see an immediate transition: wait several seconds for the watch page to reload, and account for the viewer’s autoplay settings. Confirm the source actually ended and that the selected destination is the intended one.
- You need to confirm a production-specific setup: YouTube documents unlisted test streams and Live Redirect separately, but does not explicitly guarantee identical behavior for every redirect configuration with an unlisted source. If the relevant controls do not appear or the test result is inconclusive, verify current Studio behavior for that configuration rather than assuming a public stream would behave the same.
