Test pagination by checking the expected URL, active-page indicator, and records at each representative state, then compare screenshots of those states against saved baselines. Screenshot comparisons catch visual changes; they do not prove that pagination returned the right data or selected the right page, so keep functional assertions alongside them.
Build a pagination test around states, not just clicks
Cover the first, a middle, and the last page. Also include empty or filtered results when those states exist in your app, and verify how the controls behave at the boundaries: “Previous” should be disabled or absent on the first page, and “Next” should be disabled or absent on the last. Adapt the state set to the app’s model, whether it uses numbered pages, cursor navigation, or a “Load more” control.
For every navigation step, assert the resulting URL or query parameter, the active page, and representative records before taking a screenshot. That makes it easier to tell a data or navigation failure from a purely visual difference.
Write a Playwright Test with functional and visual assertions
The example below assumes a product listing with numbered-page links, a product-list test ID, and a “Next page” link. Replace the route, labels, test IDs, and expected records with the ones in your app. Playwright’s toHaveScreenshot() stores a reference on its first run and compares later runs against it. Check the API against your installed Playwright version; the page screenshot assertion is documented from v1.23 onward.

});The example’s expected record is illustrative: use data that reliably belongs on the target page in your own test fixture. Retry-enabled Playwright assertions wait for a condition to become true until their timeout, which is preferable to an arbitrary sleep when content updates asynchronously.
Extend coverage to the last page and boundaries
Add a separate path to the last page, using a known last-page link or a sequence of next-page clicks. Assert its URL, current-page marker, and expected records, then capture a name such as pagination-last-page-desktop.png. Verify the boundary control explicitly, for example that the next link is disabled or absent. Test the first-page previous control in the same way.

Include empty and filtered results when applicable
If filtering can yield no records, assert both the empty-state message and the pagination behavior before capturing it. If a filter changes the result count or resets the current page, assert that behavior too. Give each state a descriptive, stable screenshot name so a visual diff points to the relevant scenario.
Make screenshot comparisons repeatable
- Keep environments consistent. Run baseline creation and comparisons with the same browser and operating environment where practical. Playwright notes that OS, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode can affect rendering; maintain separate references for different browser or platform projects.
- Control inputs and page state. Fix the viewport, data, locale, timezone, and relevant app state. Wait for the functional assertions that establish readiness rather than relying on timing alone.
- Know what screenshot stabilization does.
toHaveScreenshot()waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparison. Its default behavior disables CSS and Web Animations, but that does not replace assertions for your application’s loaded state. - Mask only irrelevant variation. Locator masks or a screenshot stylesheet can hide volatile items such as a timestamp or rotating avatar. Do not mask the pagination controls or records whose visual correctness is under test.
- Choose the capture area deliberately. Use a viewport screenshot for the visible pagination experience, or a full-page screenshot if layout below the fold matters. A focused element screenshot can reduce unrelated visual noise when the component itself is the target.
- Review before updating references. Inspect changed images before running
--update-snapshots. Accept updates only when the visual change is intended, and keep reference files under version control for review.
Choose tolerances and diagnose visual failures
Playwright provides comparison controls such as maxDiffPixels and a color difference threshold. Calibrate them against the rendering variation in your actual project: a permissive threshold can hide a real regression, while an overly strict setting can flag harmless variation. Stabilize the environment and inputs before loosening comparisons.

When a test fails, inspect the URL, active-page state, and displayed records first. If one of those is wrong, investigate pagination behavior or test data; the screenshot is reporting the resulting page, not identifying the underlying cause. If functional state is correct, inspect the image diff for a genuine layout or styling change, or for uncontrolled rendering variation.
