Have water from a DIY atmospheric water generator (AWG) tested before drinking it. Condensation does not make water sterile: a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) study of one commercial generator found elevated microbial counts in treated water. The practical next step is to contact a state-certified drinking-water laboratory, describe your system, and follow its sampling instructions. A home kit can screen only the parameters it measures; it cannot establish that AWG water is safe to drink.
Why AWG water needs testing
Airborne moisture can condense into water, but that process alone does not ensure the output is microbiologically or chemically suitable for drinking. The EPA’s 2018 evaluation of atmospheric water generation technology examined untreated condensate and treated water from a commercial Watergen GEN-350 over three months. Weekly samples did not detect the targeted opportunistic pathogens, but treated water had elevated heterotrophic plate counts. EPA interpreted the counts as evidence of inadequate disinfection and/or microbial regrowth after treatment, indicating microbial instability and conditions favorable to growth.
The report states that “atmospheric condensate is not sterile and should be treated adequately prior to potable use.” Its findings concern one commercial model under the study conditions; they do not establish the safety or risk of every DIY design, location, or maintenance regime. The GEN-350 had sediment and carbon filtration, ultraviolet disinfection, mineralization, and polish filtration, yet the study still found microbial concerns. That is a reason to test water as dispensed and consider the tank and plumbing—not proof that a particular DIY treatment setup is adequate.
How to arrange a meaningful test
- Contact a state-certified drinking-water laboratory. In the United States, EPA recommends independent testing through a certified laboratory. Use EPA’s drinking-water laboratory certification information to find or confirm a lab, and ask whether it is certified for the analyses you want. Explain that the sample comes from an AWG. Describe the air intake and its location, water-contact materials, treatment stages, storage tank, and recent maintenance. The EPA’s laboratory-contact guidance was last updated August 11, 2026.
- Ask specifically about microbial testing. Tell the lab or local health authority about the EPA AWG findings and ask which microbial indicators or analyses are appropriate for your system. Do not treat clear appearance, acceptable taste, a total-dissolved-solids (TDS) reading, or an at-home strip as evidence that microbial quality is acceptable.
- Discuss a basic chemical screen, but do not mistake it for an AWG standard. EPA recommends annual testing of private wells for total coliform, nitrate, TDS, and pH. That guidance applies to private wells, not atmospheric water generators. You can use those parameters as a starting point for a conversation with the laboratory, not as a validated AWG panel or required testing schedule.
- Add analytes that match your circumstances. EPA’s private-well guidance ties testing to local risks and changes in water characteristics. For example, discuss metals if mining or plumbing corrosion is a concern, volatile organic compounds near relevant fuel or industrial sources, and other analyses for unusual taste, odor, color, or local contamination concerns. For an AWG, also describe the materials that contact water and the treatment train so the lab can advise on relevant tests.
- Collect and deliver the sample exactly as instructed. Ask the laboratory for its specified container, collection procedure, preservation, and delivery timing—especially for microbial samples. There is no single sampling protocol established here for all DIY AWGs, so the laboratory’s instructions should control.
- Review the result by analyte and concentration. EPA says laboratory results should report concentrations and may indicate whether they exceed applicable drinking-water standards. A satisfactory result speaks only to the analytes tested in the sample collected; it does not certify every possible contaminant or future output.
Home test kits: useful for screening, not certification
A consumer kit or strip may help check a listed parameter such as pH, TDS, or nitrate. Before using one, verify its analytes, method, detection range, and directions. EPA’s private-well owner guide explains common testing considerations, but generic multi-parameter strips should not be presented as a complete safety test for AWG water. A kit covers only what it measures, and a basic strip does not replace certified laboratory analysis—particularly when microbial quality is a concern.

| Testing route | What it can tell you | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Home kit or strip | Screening results for the specific parameters listed by the product, such as pH, TDS, or nitrate. | Coverage, methods, and detection ranges depend on the product; it cannot by itself establish drinking-water safety. |
| Certified drinking-water laboratory | Analysis for the analytes requested, using laboratory methods; results can be considered against applicable standards. | Confirm certification for the specific analyses, follow the lab’s sample instructions, and remember that results cover only the sample and analytes tested. |
When to test again
No universal retesting interval for DIY atmospheric water generators is established by the cited EPA sources. The annual schedule for total coliform, nitrate, TDS, and pH is private-well guidance, not an AWG requirement. Consider arranging a new test after changing treatment or water-contact components, making repairs, noticing unusual water characteristics, or suspecting contamination. Ask the certified laboratory or local health authority what routine frequency makes sense for your system and circumstances.

The certification and lab-finding guidance above is U.S.-focused. In other countries, use the relevant national or regional drinking-water regulator’s laboratory directory and standards. Neither U.S. private-well recommendations nor the results from the GEN-350 study should be treated as universal requirements or as evidence about every AWG.
