1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBefore choosing a treatment system, get laboratory results that match the decision you need to make. Define whether you are checking permit compliance, diagnosing a process, evaluating pretreatment, or designing treatment; identify the relevant metals and limits; then have a qualified laboratory confirm the approved method, dissolved or total-recoverable fraction, reporting limits, and sampling instructions. A generic “metals” result is not enough to select a treatment method.
Start with the decision the test must support
The right test depends on why you are testing and where the wastewater is discharged. For permit compliance, check the permit and applicable regulatory requirements first: they may specify analytes, sampling points, analytical methods, or limits. For troubleshooting or treatment design, define the process question and the conditions the treatment must handle. A compliance sample and a process-diagnosis sample may not answer the same question.
EPA lists methods approved under Clean Water Act section 304(h) and published at 40 CFR Part 136. The applicable method depends on the regulatory program and permit, so confirm requirements with the regulator or receiving laboratory before sampling. EPA Method 200.8 advises users to establish data-quality objectives before analysis; compliance users should consult the applicable CFR provisions and current Federal Register announcements.
Choose which metals to test
Build the analyte list from permit conditions, process knowledge, prior results, and likely metal inputs. Do not assume every facility needs the same panel. EPA Method 200.8 covers multiple elements, including arsenic, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, mercury, nickel, selenium, silver, thallium, vanadium, and zinc, among others. That coverage does not establish which metals are relevant at a particular site.

Ask the laboratory whether its proposed panel includes every required analyte and whether its reporting limits are low enough for the applicable limit or treatment objective. If the target is a specific form of a metal—for example, hexavalent chromium—say so: a general chromium result does not by itself establish the concentration of that form.
Decide whether you need dissolved or total-recoverable metals
These fractions answer different questions. Under EPA Method 200.8, dissolved concentration is defined by passing the sample through a 0.45 µm membrane filter before acidification. Total-recoverable analysis uses an unfiltered sample and may require digestion to bring metals associated with particulate material into solution.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Dissolved: Useful when the decision concerns the fraction passing through the specified filter. Method 200.8 describes suitable filtration followed by acid preservation.
- Total recoverable: Includes metals in the unfiltered sample that can be brought into solution through the method’s preparation. If metals are present in particulates, digestion or extraction is required.
Do not treat the two results as interchangeable or assume one is always the right choice. The permit or treatment question should determine the fraction. If you are unsure, ask the laboratory and regulator before collection. Filtering a sample changes what is measured; it is not a neutral handling step.
Match the analytical method to the analytes and requirements
EPA lists several approved methods for metals analysis. ICP-MS and ICP-AES are laboratory techniques, not treatment options, and the presence of a method on EPA’s list does not by itself establish that it is appropriate for every analyte, reporting limit, matrix, or permit.

| Method | Technique or target | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| EPA Method 200.7 | ICP-AES | Confirm analyte coverage, required reporting limits, sample preparation, and acceptance for the applicable permit. |
| EPA Method 200.8 | ICP-MS; multi-element analysis of trace elements in waters and wastes, including dissolved and total-recoverable measurements | Confirm fraction, matrix suitability, reporting limits, and method-specific preparation. Revision 5.4 dates to 1994. |
| EPA Method 200.9 | Graphite furnace atomic absorption | Confirm that the method covers the target analyte and meets the applicable reporting and regulatory requirements. |
| EPA Method 218.6 | Analyte-specific method for dissolved hexavalent chromium | Confirm that this is the required form and fraction for the decision or permit. |
No single method is established as universally superior for wastewater. Detection limits and working ranges depend on the sample matrix, instrument, and operating conditions. Matrix and spectral interferences can affect results, so ask the laboratory to identify relevant flags, corrections, or preparation requirements rather than selecting by instrument name alone.
Get laboratory instructions before collecting a sample
Use the receiving laboratory’s instructions for containers, preservatives, sample volume, holding time, shipping, and analyte-specific exceptions. Do not infer these details from a generic sampling guide: preparation is method-specific. Method 200.8 describes filtration and acid preservation for dissolved analyses; total-recoverable analyses use an unfiltered sample, with digestion or extraction when particulate metals are present. The method also calls for samples to be well mixed and homogeneous before aliquoting.

- Confirm the sampling point and purpose. Match the collection location and timing to the permit or process question.
- Agree on analytes, fraction, method, and reporting limits. Have the lab confirm these against the permit or treatment objective.
- Obtain the lab’s collection and shipping instructions. Follow its requirements for preservation, containers, holding time, and any filtration.
- Document the sample and chain of custody. Record the requested analyses and handling details using the lab’s procedures.
A 0.45 µm filter assembly is relevant only when the sampling plan calls for dissolved-metal analysis. Do not filter a sample simply because a filter is available; confirm the plan with the lab first.

A field kit or handheld screen can help flag a possible issue, but it should not be presented as a substitute for an applicable Clean Water Act Part 136 method or permit-required laboratory result. The EPA methods discussed here are laboratory analytical methods. If a screen suggests metals may be present, use the required laboratory method to obtain decision-quality results.

Review the laboratory report before acting on it
Ask for the information needed to interpret the result, not just a list of concentrations. Method 200.8 calls for quality-control information with results and notes that performance depends on the matrix and operating conditions.
- Analyte names and units
- Whether each result is dissolved or total recoverable
- Detection and reporting limits
- Quality-control information and any qualifications or matrix-interference flags
- The method and sample preparation used
Compare results only with limits and objectives that apply to the same analyte, fraction, units, and sampling context. A result below a reporting limit is not automatically proof that a permit limit or treatment target has been met; check the reported limit against the relevant threshold.
Choose treatment only after the testing context is clear
Metals concentrations alone do not establish which treatment technology is best. Before comparing options, assemble representative results alongside flow, pH, competing constituents, variability over time, solids-handling needs, and residual-disposal constraints. Use the applicable discharge or receiving-system limits and treatment goals to define performance requirements, then evaluate alternatives with a qualified process engineer. Analytical methods establish how to measure metals; they do not establish comparative treatment performance.
