Test reflection and serialization in the same minified, obfuscated artifact you plan to ship—not only in an unminified debug build. Exercise every runtime-discovered class and member, verify serialization in both directions with current and historical data, and keep the matching build’s mapping file so failures can be diagnosed. The examples below focus on Android R8 and Gson; adapt the checks and rules to the shrinker, optimizer, serializer, and versions your project actually uses.

Build the artifact that needs testing

A passing test against an unminified build does not establish that reflection will work after shrinking. Gson’s Android guidance is explicit: “If you do want to make Gson work with minification, you must test your code after minification has been applied.” Google Gson’s troubleshooting guide treats testing the minified code as necessary.

Run the relevant tests against the same release variant and R8 settings used for distribution. If you use Android R8 full mode in production, validate full mode; a test under a different mode does not cover its assumptions. A debug-versus-release comparison is useful for isolating a minification-related regression, but the release artifact is the decisive check.

Exercise every reflective access path

List the code paths that discover or invoke types and members at runtime, then make tests reach each one. Static analysis may not see a dependency that is expressed only through reflection, so R8 can remove or rename something the runtime expects unless applicable rules or library metadata preserve it.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Classes discovered by name or through a registry or framework.
  • Constructors invoked reflectively, especially no-argument constructors not called directly elsewhere.
  • Methods and fields accessed by reflection.
  • Annotations and generic signatures inspected at runtime.

Android’s keep-rule examples show that a reflection-only no-argument constructor can be removed, causing an InstantiationException. Test the actual reflective call rather than assuming that keeping the model class is sufficient: in R8 full mode, keeping a class does not implicitly keep its default constructor.

Test serialization in both directions

For each representative model, check both what the serializer writes and what the application can read. A round trip using a newly created object alone may miss renamed output keys or breakage in data saved by an earlier app version.

  1. Serialize representative instances and assert the expected JSON field names and values.
  2. Deserialize known payloads and assert the resulting fields and defaults.
  3. If the app reads data persisted or delivered by earlier releases, deserialize fixtures captured from those versions and verify the expected result.

For Gson, stable @SerializedName values can decouple JSON keys from Java or Kotlin member identifiers. When a field name has changed and older payloads must remain readable, Gson documents @SerializedName(value = ..., alternate = ...) as a way to accept an earlier name. Whether to support an alternate name or migrate stored data depends on the app’s compatibility requirements.

Android app not working in Release mode; random property names

If JSON keys or release behavior differ after minification, compare the serialized output with the expected names and inspect the applicable keep rules, annotations, serializer behavior, and Gson version. Gson identifies random property names in release builds as a possible R8/ProGuard configuration symptom. A mapping file from that exact build can help determine whether a field name was obfuscated.

Android app unable to parse JSON after app update

Test a fixture written by the previous release, not just JSON produced by the current model. Gson documents failures to parse earlier-version JSON as a possible configuration or compatibility issue. Check whether serialized names changed and whether the application needs an alternate accepted name or an explicit data migration.

Cover generic types and runtime metadata

If the application relies on Gson TypeToken, Retrofit generic response types, annotations, or other reflected metadata, exercise those exact paths in the optimized artifact. R8 full mode can strip signatures and other attributes unless applicable rules preserve them, which can affect code that inspects generic types at runtime.

Check the actual serializer and networking-library versions before adding keep rules from a generic example. Current library versions may bundle consumer rules; duplicating or broadening rules without checking can be unnecessary. R8’s FAQ for version 8.2.22 discusses compatibility and full modes, as well as Gson and Retrofit cases.

Compare configurations to isolate the cause

Use only comparisons relevant to the project. Each comparison answers a different question; they are not interchangeable tests.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Comparison What it helps isolate
Unminified debug versus minified release Whether the failure is associated with optimization or obfuscation rather than the tested code path alone.
R8 compatibility mode versus full mode, if both are supported or relevant Whether the failure depends on the mode’s different assumptions about constructors, reflection-only classes, or attributes.
Current payload versus earlier-release fixtures, if the app handles saved or received historical data Whether an update changed serialization compatibility.
Reflection-based serialization versus explicit adapters, if the project uses both Whether the failure is specific to reflective access.

R8 documents differences between compatibility and full mode; do not infer full-mode behavior from a compatibility-mode test. The production configuration should be represented in validation.

Keep only what the runtime needs

When a test demonstrates that a reflective element is removed or changed, add a rule for the required class, member, or metadata. Avoid a broad rule such as -keep class ... { *; } unless the application genuinely needs every member: Android warns that broad rules prevent optimization of members that do not need to be retained.

For Gson, its guidance recommends constraining reflected models, including needed no-argument constructors and fields annotated with @SerializedName, or avoiding reflection with explicit adapters. Apply the guidance that matches the library version and behavior in your project, then rerun the optimized-artifact tests.

Investigate failures with the matching mapping file

Preserve the R8 mapping file generated for each tested build. R8 describes mapping files as a way to translate optimized stack traces back to original source information; Gson also notes their value when investigating obfuscated field names. A mapping belongs to the build that generated it: do not use one from another build to interpret a crash or unexpected JSON key.

When a test fails, use the symptom to narrow the investigation:

  • Reflective construction fails: check whether the invoked constructor is present and retained under the production mode.
  • Fields are absent or JSON keys differ: verify the serializer’s naming behavior, annotations, relevant keep rules, and library version.
  • Old payloads fail: compare the historical fixture’s keys with the current model and determine whether an alternate name or migration is required.
  • Generic deserialization or Retrofit behavior changes: inspect the required generic signatures and annotation metadata under the actual R8 mode.
  • Deserialized defaults are missing: Gson says it may fall back to JDK Unsafe when it cannot invoke a constructor. Where appropriate, use a static or top-level model with a no-argument constructor; consider disabling JDK Unsafe to expose constructor problems during testing.

Gson’s troubleshooting guide covers release-only renamed properties, old-payload parsing, mapping files, constructors, and defaults.
