To check for RAM errors in Windows, save your work, open Run, enter mdsched, and choose Restart now and check for problems. If the test reports errors, repeat testing at default memory settings and then test modules and slots methodically: a memory-test error is serious, but it does not by itself identify a faulty RAM stick or prove RAM is the only cause.
Before testing: note the symptoms and protect your work
Write down what is happening and when: a repeatable crash, random restart, freeze, blue screen, application launch failure, or corrupted data can all justify checking memory. A stop code or application crash alone does not prove that RAM is defective; memory testing is one part of diagnosing a broader system problem.
- Save open work before a reboot-based test.
- Back up important files before extended diagnosis or continued use of a system with repeatable memory errors. Marginal memory can cause data loss or disk corruption, according to PassMark’s MemTest86 troubleshooting guidance.
- If you plan to remove or move memory modules, shut down and follow the computer or motherboard maker’s instructions for safe handling.
Run Windows Memory Diagnostic
Windows includes a built-in diagnostic that runs after a restart. Microsoft documents Standard as the default test mix; Extended performs more thorough tests but takes longer. The steps below reflect Microsoft’s documentation available on October 7, 2026.
- Save your work, then open Run from Start or press Windows key + R.
- Enter
mdschedand press Enter. - Select Restart now and check for problems. The computer will restart and run the diagnostic.
- To choose Extended rather than the default Standard test, press F1 on the diagnostic screen, change Test Mix to Extended, then press F10 to apply the setting and continue.
- After Windows restarts, check the result notification after signing in. If it does not appear, open Event Viewer and navigate to Application and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > MemoryDiagnostics-Results > Debug. Microsoft identifies Event ID 2001 as a result indicating that no memory errors were detected.
See Microsoft’s Windows Memory Diagnostic instructions for the documented test options and result location.

- FAST CHARGING: The memory tester use LED lights to test all data cables in the memory. When hardware faults occur in these data cable circuits, the brightness of the LED indicator light will change, whether they are particularly bright or not. Insert the memory module that need to be tested into the slot of the memory tester. If all indicator lights are on and the brightness is consistent, indicate that there is no open circuit or short circuit fault in the data line circuit of the
- USING TIPS: If the indicator light flashes during testing, indicate poor with the gold finger. If the indicator light does not light up, indicate an open circuit fault in the hardware. Check the wear of the gold finger, whether the is damaged, and whether the PCB circuit is open, identify the faulty pin based on the numerical indication of the indicator light, and then use a multimeter to identify the specific cause of the fault. After passing the hardware test of

When to use a bootable memory test
A bootable test runs outside the normal Windows session, which can be useful as a separate check when Windows testing is inconclusive or symptoms persist. PassMark distributes MemTest86 for booting from USB media. Preparing the USB drive involves physical media; back up its files first because preparation may erase them. No particular brand or capacity is required by the cited documentation. See the MemTest86 product page for its current download and setup details.
Memtest86+ is another project with public technical documentation. It is a distinct project, not a guarantee that the same errors will be found as with MemTest86. Its documentation, like PassMark’s, notes that testing also exercises the CPU, caches, and motherboard; a test crash therefore does not automatically establish a RAM fault. See Memtest86+ documentation.
| Approach | Useful for | What it cannot establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Memory Diagnostic | Running a built-in Windows check with Standard or Extended test mix and a documented Event Viewer result. | A clean run does not rule out an intermittent problem; it requires a restart. |
| MemTest86 from USB | Running a bootable diagnostic outside the normal Windows session. | An error or crash does not necessarily identify a particular DIMM; CPU, motherboard, firmware, and compatibility can affect results. |
| Memtest86+ | Using a separate project’s bootable test and technical documentation. | It also cannot independently identify every cause or guarantee that a module is defective. |
| One-module and slot swaps | Process-of-elimination checks when you can safely access the memory. | They require careful records; reseating and system-specific memory mapping can affect results. |
What a memory-test error means
Treat a reported error seriously and try to reproduce it, but do not assume it names the failed component. PassMark says most reported memory errors are valid, while also documenting system-level complications, including cases where a test may misidentify memory size. A small number of failing addresses and one or two bits can be strong evidence of a real error, and intermittent errors can still be valid. Its practical guidance is direct: “All valid memory errors should be corrected.”

- [Compatibility] RAM memory diagnostic analyzer Suitable for desktop ddr3, ddr4, ddr5udmm, ddr5rdimm memory, making it an ideal choice for repairing computers without causing any harm.
- [User-friendly Design] RAM tester ddr3 ddr4 easy-to-use memory diagnostic analyzer with indicator lights for quick fault detection and memory module testing.

A test exercises more than the RAM chips. CPU, caches, motherboard, firmware, and memory compatibility can influence the outcome. Address-to-module mapping also varies with CPU and motherboard design, channel mapping, and interleaving; a failing address is not a universal way to identify a specific stick. Consult PassMark’s troubleshooting documentation and MemTest86 support information for these limitations.

Establish a baseline at supported default settings
Before concluding that a module is bad, test with memory settings that the system supports by default. XMP or other aggressive timings may be involved in instability. PassMark recommends trying default or conservative settings, disabling XMP, and checking for a relevant BIOS update. Check the motherboard manual for the recommended slots and supported module configurations before changing the arrangement.

Do not casually adjust memory voltage to try to clear errors. PassMark discusses voltage changes but warns that excessive voltage can damage components; a general diagnostic should start with supported defaults, not voltage tuning. AMD also recommends checking configuration and stability with modules installed one at a time; see AMD’s memory stability guidance.

Keep a written record for each run. Note the physical stick, slot, memory settings, test used, and result. Follow the motherboard manual’s slot recommendations, and test one module at a time where practical.
- At supported default settings, run the same test with one module installed in a recommended slot.
- Repeat for each module, recording whether errors recur.
- If a module reports errors, test it in another supported slot if practical; if the system has multiple modules, compare results by swapping one variable at a time.
- Compare whether the error follows a particular stick, stays associated with a slot, or appears only with a particular multi-module configuration.
- Repeat the relevant runs to confirm the pattern rather than relying on a single result.
If errors follow one stick across supported slots, that supports a module fault. If they remain associated with one slot or appear only with multiple modules, investigate seating, the slot, memory controller, firmware, or compatibility. These are diagnostic inferences, not guarantees: memory mapping is system-specific. Moving a module also reseats it, so an error disappearing after a move does not by itself prove the memory silicon is healthy.
What to do when errors persist
- Errors follow one module at default settings: Check the system or memory maker’s warranty and replacement process. Before buying a replacement, verify the motherboard’s supported configuration and qualified-vendor list.
- Multiple modules fail in one slot or configuration: Investigate the slot, motherboard, CPU memory controller, firmware, seating, and compatibility rather than immediately replacing every module.
- The test repeatedly locks up or crashes: A platform problem can cause a test failure too. Consult the system or component manufacturer if supported configuration and stability checks do not resolve it.
- The test passes but symptoms continue: Consider repeating a test and investigating other causes of the crashes or freezes; a clean run does not establish that intermittent memory trouble is impossible.
PassMark advises replacing modules once failure is established. For broader guidance on platform and test limitations, see MemTest86 support.
