For automated tests against Safari on physical iPhones or iPads, use a device service that supports Playwright on real iOS hardware; BrowserStack documents this workflow through Automate. Use Playwright emulation and WebKit for faster routine checks, then reserve physical-device runs for flows where actual iOS Safari behavior matters.
Choose the right kind of iOS test
“iPhone testing” can mean three different things: a simulated mobile configuration, a browser-engine check, or a test running in Safari on physical iOS hardware. These are useful at different stages, but they are not interchangeable.

For most teams, a practical split is to run emulation and browser projects frequently, then run a focused set of critical flows on real iOS devices before release. Choose the physical-device matrix based on your audience, supported iOS versions, and known risk areas.
Use iPhone emulation for fast feedback
Playwright device profiles configure properties such as user agent, viewport, screen dimensions, and touch behavior. They help catch layout and interaction problems, but a passing result means the test passed with those simulated settings—not that it passed on an iPhone.

Playwright projects let you group browser and device settings and run a project alone with --project. For example, add a Mobile Safari project to playwright.config.ts:

npx playwright test --project="Mobile Safari"The profile name selects a Playwright device preset; it does not mean Playwright has connected to that iPhone model. Use this layer to check responsive layouts, touch-oriented interactions, and mobile-specific application paths early and often.
Add a separate WebKit project
Playwright’s WebKit project exercises WebKit, which is useful for browser-engine coverage and Safari-oriented debugging. Playwright builds WebKit from the latest WebKit main branch, so its behavior can differ from released Safari. Playwright notes that macOS WebKit is the closest option for Safari-like behavior in some cases, including video playback, but it still does not reproduce iOS hardware or constitute a real iPhone Safari run.

After installing or updating Playwright, install its corresponding supported browser binaries:

npx playwright install webkitYou can define a WebKit project alongside the emulation project and run it independently with npx playwright test --project=webkit if you name the project webkit. Keep the results labeled accurately in CI so a WebKit pass is not mistaken for physical iOS coverage.
Run Playwright on real iOS Safari through BrowserStack
BrowserStack documents a Playwright workflow through Automate for tests on real iOS devices. Its current documentation lists these prerequisites: a BrowserStack username and access key, Node.js 16 or later, and Playwright 1.50.1 or later. The iOS SDK workflow described on that page currently supports Node.js; it directs other language frameworks to a legacy workflow. These requirements and the available device inventory may change, so check the provider’s current instructions before integrating a suite.

- Prepare the project. Use the Node.js workflow and Playwright version required by BrowserStack’s current real iOS Playwright documentation. Install dependencies and confirm the test passes locally before adding a hosted run.
- Set credentials securely. Supply your BrowserStack username and access key through environment variables or your CI system’s secret store. Do not commit account keys in the configuration file.
- Configure the device targets. In
browserstack.yml, define platform entries usingbrowserName: safari, the chosen iOS version, and a device name. BrowserStack’s example lists iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 14, and iPhone 12 Pro as targets; confirm the current inventory before relying on a specific combination. - Run the documented build command. Use the sample test command in the current BrowserStack quickstart, adapting the test selection to your project. Keep the hosted run focused on critical journeys rather than duplicating every rapid emulation check.
- Review provider support before depending on capabilities. The iOS Playwright page lists
playwrightLogs,consoleLogs,resolution, andgeoLocationas unsupported capabilities. Check current supported-command documentation for capabilities your test suite requires.
Because hosted-device integrations are provider-specific, do not assume every Playwright option or debugging feature works identically to a local browser. Validate the exact device, iOS version, configuration fields, and evidence available to your team in the current provider documentation.
Build a useful real-device matrix
A real-device suite is most valuable when it adds evidence that emulation cannot provide. Select a small set of devices and iOS versions based on your users and the application’s highest-risk behavior, then expand when defects or audience needs justify it.

- Prioritize flows sensitive to Safari behavior, such as sign-in, checkout, navigation, media, and interactions that depend on touch or mobile browser UI.
- Keep broad responsive and routine regression coverage in emulation and browser projects; use hosted physical runs for release checks and critical user journeys.
- Confirm that required logs, geolocation, resolution controls, and other capabilities are supported for the selected provider and iOS workflow.
This division is a practical testing strategy, not a claim that any one test layer guarantees defect-free releases.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
The test passes on an iPhone profile but fails on a handset
The profile simulated browser parameters rather than running on iPhone hardware. Reproduce the critical path on hosted real iOS Safari, and keep the emulation result labeled as such.
WebKit passes but Safari behaves differently
Playwright WebKit can be ahead of released Safari and is not iOS hardware. Verify the issue in a real iOS Safari run, especially when it concerns a browser-specific feature.
The hosted run rejects a capability or setting
Check BrowserStack’s current iOS Playwright capability documentation. Its listed unsupported capabilities include playwrightLogs, consoleLogs, resolution, and geoLocation; do not rely on these in the iOS workflow unless current documentation says support has changed.

The hosted job cannot authenticate or start
Check that the username and access key are present in the CI environment, that secrets are being passed under the names expected by the configuration, and that your Node.js and Playwright versions meet the provider’s current minimums. Avoid printing secret values in job logs.
A requested device target is unavailable
Device inventories change. Verify the exact model and iOS version in the current provider documentation or dashboard, and update the target rather than assuming an example device remains available.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
Emulated checks are convenient for frequent feedback inside an existing Playwright workflow. Hosted physical-device tests add the fidelity of actual hardware and Safari, but require provider credentials and should be scoped to the cases where that extra coverage is useful. The cited documentation establishes the workflow and some capability constraints, but does not establish current service prices or a comparative performance benchmark. Check the provider’s current pricing and plan limits before estimating CI cost.
