Use cy.origin() whenever a Cypress end-to-end test needs to interact with a page after navigation to a different origin. Match the destination’s scheme, hostname (including subdomain), and port exactly, and put commands for that page inside the matching callback. In Cypress 14 and later, sibling subdomains count as different origins too.
What Cypress considers a different origin
An origin consists of a URL’s scheme, hostname, and port. A change to any of these makes it a different origin: for example, https://app.example.test and https://login.example.test differ by hostname, while http://app.example.test differs by scheme. A non-default port is part of the origin as well. A path or query string alone does not make a new origin.
The string passed to cy.origin() must match the destination origin, including its subdomain and port. You can include the scheme and port explicitly; if you omit the scheme, Cypress defaults to HTTPS.
Use cy.origin() in a multi-domain test
Start on the application, trigger or perform navigation to the other site, and run the destination’s Cypress commands inside a top-level cy.origin() block. Once navigation returns to the original origin, commands can continue there.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
const email = 'person@example.test'
cy.visit('https://app.example.test')
cy.get('[data-cy="sign-in"]').click()
cy.origin('https://login.example.test', { args: { email } }, ({ email }) => {
cy.get('[name="email"]').type(email)
cy.get('[type="submit"]').click()
})
// After the application redirects back to its own origin:
cy.get('[data-cy="account-menu"]').should('be.visible')
Adapt the URL, selectors, and flow to the application. A click can take the browser to the secondary origin before the block, as shown. You can also place cy.visit() inside the origin callback when directly visiting that destination.
Visit the secondary site directly
cy.visit('https://app.example.test')
cy.visit('https://docs.example.test')
cy.origin('https://docs.example.test', () => {
cy.get('h1').should('be.visible')
})
Pass values with args, not closures
Cypress serializes the callback and evaluates it in the secondary origin. It cannot access lexical variables from the surrounding test. Pass values that can be serialized through the args option, then receive them as callback parameters. Do not rely on an outer variable being available inside the callback.
Use a separate top-level block for each origin
For a flow that visits several origins, use successive top-level cy.origin() blocks, each with the precise origin for the page being tested. Do not nest origin blocks. cy.intercept() and cy.session() are also prohibited inside an origin callback.

Choose the right test boundary
For a destination your team controls
Exercise the real navigation and interact with the destination inside cy.origin(). This can cover the parts of an SSO, OAuth, or OIDC journey that your team intends to test.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For an uncontrolled third-party site
Cypress recommends checking the outbound link’s href instead of navigating to and automating an external site. That keeps the test from depending on another organization’s availability or behavior.
When you only need to check a response
cy.request() may be suitable for some response checks. It does not test the destination’s browser-based user interaction, so it is not a substitute when that interaction is what the test must verify.

For an iframe, another tab, or a popup
cy.origin() supports top-level page navigation; it does not make commands in a different tab or window, or a cross-origin iframe, available to the test. Cypress documents iframe access as unsupported. Keep the test at an integration boundary your application controls rather than treating an iframe as a top-level origin.
Version behavior and migration
cy.origin() became generally available for end-to-end testing in Cypress 12. Cypress 14 changed cross-origin behavior: it no longer injects document.domain by default, so tests must use cy.origin() for distinct origins, including sibling subdomains.

Do not treat disabling web security as the normal solution. It is described as a bypass for cases that cannot otherwise be worked around, comes with browser limitations, and does not turn cross-origin iframe access into a portable Cypress feature.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom or cause | What to check and change |
|---|---|
| A selector command runs while the browser is on the destination, but Cypress cannot interact with it. | Move commands that inspect or act on the destination into a cy.origin() callback for that page’s origin. |
| The origin block does not match the current page. | Compare scheme, full hostname including subdomain, and port with the destination URL. A path or query is not part of the origin. |
| The callback cannot read a test variable. | Pass serializable data through { args: ... } and accept it as a callback parameter. |
The callback contains a nested origin block, cy.intercept(), or cy.session(). |
Move origin changes into successive top-level blocks. Keep the prohibited commands out of origin callbacks. |
| The test targets an iframe, tab, or popup. | Use a test boundary that does not require Cypress to interact with those contexts; cy.origin() is for top-level page navigation. |
| The flow changes from HTTPS to HTTP or uses a different port. | Cypress documents HTTPS-to-HTTP navigation as an error and requires URLs navigated in one test to use the same port. Align the test URLs and application flow accordingly. |
Or skip the browser setup:
If the task is to capture a page screenshot rather than test its browser interaction, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-call screenshot API. It is not a replacement for Cypress assertions or multi-domain workflow tests.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Its capture flow accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. ScreenshotNeo also offers an MCP server for AI agents, with 1,000 screenshots a month free without a card and paid plans starting at $5 for 3,000. Learn more at ScreenshotNeo.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a path or query string go in the cy.origin() origin argument?
No. The origin is defined by the scheme, hostname, and port; a path or query string does not distinguish an origin.
Does cy.origin() work for cross-origin iframes?
No. It supports top-level page navigation, not interaction with a cross-origin iframe.
