To check the connection used by a Chromecast, run a network check on the TV-connected device when possible. Netflix documents an in-app check at Get Help > Check your Network. Google TV’s network settings show which network the device is using, but are not a built-in speed test. A phone test can help assess the household connection, but it does not directly measure the Chromecast’s Wi-Fi link.
First, identify which Chromecast you have
The steps depend on whether your device is a cast-only Chromecast, Chromecast with Google TV (HD or 4K), or Chromecast Ultra. Cast-only models do not have the same app interface as Google TV devices, and supported network options vary by generation.
- Chromecast with Google TV: Open the TV’s Settings and go to Network & Internet to check the connected network. This confirms network details; Google does not describe it as a speed test. See Google’s Chromecast connection troubleshooting.
- Older cast-only Chromecast: In the Google Home app, select the device tile, open Settings, then Device information and Wi-Fi. This shows Wi-Fi information, not measured throughput.
Run a speed check on the TV-connected device
Use Netflix’s in-app network check
- Open Netflix on the TV-connected device.
- Open the Netflix menu and select Get Help, then Check your Network.
- Record the result and whether the Chromecast is connected over Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Menu placement can vary by Netflix app version.
Netflix documents this check for devices running its app. For browsers, Netflix says to visit Fast.com and wait for the test to finish. The Netflix app route is the more direct option when available because it runs on the TV-connected device. Details are in Netflix’s connection speed testing guidance.

If the Chromecast does not have a Netflix app interface
For cast-only models, use a network check in an app available on the connected TV if one provides it. Otherwise, you can test from a phone or another device, but label that result as the phone’s connection—not the Chromecast’s own Wi-Fi performance.

- The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
- HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
- See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
- Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
Interpret the result against the service you watch
Speed targets are not universal: Google’s device guidance and Netflix’s service recommendations differ in scope. Use the figure from the service or device maker that applies to your setup, rather than treating one number as a guarantee for every app.
| Publisher and scope | Published speed guidance | What it applies to |
|---|---|---|
| At least 20 Mbps for 4K content | Supported Google streaming devices; Google also specifies a 4K-capable display. See Google’s device requirements. | |
| Netflix | 3 Mbps or higher for 720p HD; 5 Mbps or higher for 1080p Full HD; 15 Mbps or higher for 4K UHD | Netflix’s recommended internet speeds for those resolutions. See Netflix’s recommendations. |
Neither set of figures guarantees a particular resolution or uninterrupted playback. App and device limits, congestion, weak Wi-Fi, local network conditions, content availability, and ISP performance can affect what plays.

Why a phone speed test may not match Chromecast playback
A speed test measures a particular device’s path to a test server at a particular moment. A phone in the same room may have different radio conditions, antenna characteristics, or Wi-Fi band from the Chromecast. Its result cannot establish the Chromecast’s actual throughput or signal quality.
For a useful comparison, run the test on the TV-connected device where possible. Keep the test service, approximate time, router and internet connection consistent; note the Wi-Fi band and whether other household devices are active. If comparing Wi-Fi with Ethernet, change only the connection path where practical. A wired result can help distinguish a Wi-Fi problem from a broader internet issue, but does not prove every app will perform the same way.

- Chromecast is easy to install and compatible with almost any TV that has an HDMI port; to get started, just plug it into your TV’s HDMI port, connect to Wi-Fi, and start streaming
What to check when the result is low or playback buffers
- Confirm the network. Check that the streaming device is connected to the intended Wi-Fi network. If you are casting from a phone, Google recommends confirming that the phone and streaming device are on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Check the band your model supports. Google suggests 5 GHz where supported. First-generation Chromecast supports only 2.4 GHz, so it cannot be moved to 5 GHz. See Google’s Wi-Fi connection guidance.
- Reduce Wi-Fi obstacles and interference. Move the router closer where practical. Google also suggests moving the streaming device away from the TV and nearby wires or equipment that may interfere.
- Restart and update network equipment. Restart the streaming device and modem/router, and check for router firmware updates.
- Check network load. Many active devices can compete for available capacity. Retry when fewer devices are using the connection to see whether the result changes.
- Consider network isolation restrictions. Access-point or client isolation can prevent communication with Google streaming devices. Public, hotel, school, or business networks may restrict setup or connectivity.
Use Ethernet as an optional comparison
A wired test can help determine whether Wi-Fi is the weak link, but an Ethernet connection is optional and compatibility depends on the Chromecast model. Google says Chromecast and Chromecast with Google TV use a separately sold Ethernet adapter rather than a built-in Ethernet port; verify model compatibility before choosing an adapter. Its setup guide covers Ethernet adapter setup for Chromecast.
- Connect the compatible adapter to the Chromecast.
- Connect an Ethernet cable from the adapter to a working router.
- Connect power to the adapter.
- Complete setup with the Google Home app on Android or iOS.
For a fair Wi-Fi-versus-wired comparison, use the same device, test, approximate time, and router/internet connection where practical. If Ethernet is much faster, that points toward a Wi-Fi coverage or interference issue; it does not by itself identify the precise cause.
