Test the customer’s problem and willingness to take meaningful action before investing in a complete AI product. Start with the assumptions that matter most and have the least evidence: interview people in the target segment about what they already do, test a clear offer with a measurable call to action, then ask qualified prospects for a stronger commitment if early signals justify it. Interest in an idea—or a convincing demo—is not proof that customers will buy, keep using, or profitably receive the product.
What “demand” means for an AI product
Demand is not one yes-or-no claim. A prospective customer may have a real problem yet reject your proposed solution, like the offer but lack buying authority, or pay once without using the product again. Keep those questions separate from whether the technology can deliver the promised result and whether the business can do so economically.
- Desirability: Does a defined customer have a consequential problem and want the outcome you propose?
- Feasibility: Can you deliver that outcome reliably enough in the customer’s actual workflow?
- Viability: Can the product’s revenue support the costs of delivering and selling it?
- Adaptability: Can the idea adjust as customer needs or conditions change?
Strategyzer’s guidance on testing ideas recommends identifying the critical assumptions behind an idea rather than treating them all as equally important (How to test your idea). Its assumption-mapping guidance defines a hypothesis as “an assumption that is testable, precise and discrete” (How assumptions mapping can focus teams).
For example, instead of “people want an AI assistant,” write a testable statement such as: “We believe [target role] will [observable action] when offered [specific outcome] at [stated price or commitment].” This is a template, not a market benchmark. Make the role, action, offer, and price explicit enough that the result can challenge the assumption.

Choose the riskiest assumption first
List what must be true for the product to succeed, then prioritize the assumptions that are both important and weakly supported. A useful assumption might concern the frequency of a painful task, whether the buyer will pay to improve it, or whether a proposed AI workflow fits existing operations. Avoid spending your first experiment on an assumption that is easy to test but would not change the decision to build, revise, or stop.
Before running an experiment, record four things: the hypothesis, the test, the measurement, and the threshold that will count as success. Strategyzer’s Test Card is designed to make those items explicit (Validate your ideas with the Test Card). Set a threshold based on the segment, channel, offer, price, and next decision; there is no universal interview count or conversion rate established for AI products.

Run tests in order of increasing commitment
1. Discover the existing problem
Recruit people who match a specific user or buyer profile. Ask them to walk through the last time the problem occurred, what they did, how often it happens, what the workaround costs, who chooses or pays for a solution, and what happens if the problem remains. Questions about past behavior reveal more than asking whether someone would use a hypothetical AI tool.
Interviews are useful for learning the customer’s language, workflow, and pain points. They are not proof of purchase: a person can sincerely praise an idea without changing what they do or spending money.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
2. Test a clear proposition and action
Put the offer in front of the intended segment using a simple landing page, clickable mockup, or narrow prototype. Describe the customer’s problem and desired outcome in plain language, explain how the proposed product addresses it, and include an explicit action—such as requesting a pilot discussion, booking a sales conversation, or signing up for an update.
Measure the action among the people who actually match the target segment. A signup is observable behavior, but it is not equivalent to payment; broad curiosity from an unqualified audience does not establish demand among likely buyers. Strategyzer’s guidance on connecting an experiment to a value proposition recommends focusing on customer jobs, pains, gains, and a clear call to action (How to design a strong experiment).

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
3. Ask for a real commitment when the signal merits it
If early tests produce a credible signal, make the offer more concrete. Ask qualified prospects to book a pilot discussion, commit staff time, sign a letter of intent, or pay for a clearly described pilot or presale where appropriate. Record who made the commitment, whether they have buying authority, what procurement steps remain, and what objections arose.
Be transparent about what exists and what does not. Do not present an unavailable product as ready to ship or collect money without a clear fulfillment and refund plan; obtain jurisdiction-specific advice before taking payment. A stronger commitment can be more informative than stated interest, but it still does not prove retention, accuracy, or product quality unless the experiment actually measures those outcomes.

Keep demand evidence distinct from AI feasibility and economics
A compelling demo can help someone understand a workflow, but it does not establish that the workflow can be delivered consistently in production. Test technical and operational feasibility separately from customer demand. For an AI product, practical cost checks may include model inference, human review, integration, support, and customer acquisition. Estimate them against plausible pricing rather than treating customer interest as evidence that the unit economics work.
Use a prototype when the key uncertainty is whether the product can perform a task or fit into a workflow; it generally takes more time to prepare than an interview or landing page. Strategyzer’s evidence guidance distinguishes stated responses from behavior closer to a real purchase and notes that different experiments vary in speed and strength (How strong is your innovation evidence?).
Compare experiments by the decision they can change
Before choosing a test, compare the options against the uncertainty you need to resolve:
- Assumption: Is the test about desirability, feasibility, viability, or adaptability?
- Evidence: Does it capture an opinion, an observable action, or a commitment near purchase?
- Effort: How much setup is required, and how soon will the result be interpretable?
- Cost and exposure: What cash, team time, privacy or reputational risk, and delivery obligation does it create?
- Audience: Do participants match the people who would use or buy the product?
- Decision relevance: Could the result change the product, segment, offer, price, or decision to stop?
After the test, compare observed results with the threshold you set in advance. Decide whether to continue, revise the assumption or offer, change direction, or stop. Keep the result tied to the assumption it tested: a successful signup test is evidence about the response to that offer, not evidence that the AI works or that customers will remain.
