Test light and dark states separately when both are requirements, keep the browser and capture environment consistent, and review image diffs before accepting a new baseline.
Set up a dark-mode screenshot test
Install Playwright Test in your project if it is not already present, then create a test file such as tests/dark-mode.spec.ts. The example below uses the documented Playwright Test API; replace / with the route you want to test.

});Run the test with npx playwright test. On its first run, Playwright creates the expected screenshot. On later runs, it captures the page and compares the result with that baseline. Review and commit approved reference images with the test code; a baseline is part of the test’s expected behavior, not disposable output.
Choose where to configure the color scheme
Playwright supports light and dark color-scheme emulation. Configure the scheme at the scope that best matches your test setup:

For products that support both appearances, create distinct dark and light tests or projects, with explicit screenshot names such as home-dark.png and home-light.png. Separate names make each reference image’s intended state clear and prevent one appearance from standing in for the other.
Make the screenshot comparison reliable
Wait for the page state you intend to test
Set the emulated scheme before checking the page, navigate to the target route, and wait for app-specific content to be ready when navigation alone is not enough. If fonts, images, animations, or asynchronous data are still changing, the image may differ for reasons unrelated to the color theme.

Keep capture conditions consistent
Playwright warns that screenshot output can vary with the host operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Use consistent environments to create and compare baselines. If you intentionally test multiple browsers or platforms, maintain the corresponding expected images separately rather than comparing unlike environments against one reference.
Use screenshot assertion options selectively
Playwright’s screenshot assertion waits until two consecutive page screenshots match before comparing the last capture with the baseline. This can reduce transient rendering noise, but it does not eliminate differences between machines or hide a genuinely unstable page.

The assertion’s stylePath option applies a stylesheet during capture. Use it only to suppress content that is genuinely outside the test, such as a clock or rotating advertisement. Hiding a component because it renders incorrectly in dark mode would mask the defect the test should detect.
Visual comparison options include a perceived color-difference threshold and limits on the number or ratio of differing pixels. Playwright’s API reference documents a default YIQ color-difference threshold of 0.2. Set stricter or looser limits to match the visual contract for the page, then inspect the generated diff when a comparison fails. A larger allowance can reduce noise but may also let real regressions pass.

Review and update reference images
When a design change is intentional, regenerate screenshots with:
npx playwright test --update-snapshotsInspect the new images and comparison output before accepting the change. Commit approved snapshots to version control so that future test runs compare against the reviewed appearance. Do not update snapshots just to turn a failing build green: first establish whether the difference is an intended design change, environmental drift, or a visual regression.

Troubleshoot common failures
- The screenshot shows light colors. Confirm the application responds to the
prefers-color-schememedia feature and that the emulated scheme is set before the screenshot. If the app uses a separate in-app theme control instead, exercise that control as part of the test; media emulation alone cannot select an unrelated application setting. - The test fails with a large or unexpected diff. Check the route, loaded content, selected color scheme, browser version, operating system, and capture mode against the environment used for the baseline. Inspect the diff before deciding whether to change the test or update the expected image.
- Only small regions differ from run to run. Look for changing clocks, ads, animations, asynchronous content, or other volatile elements. Wait for the relevant state to settle, or use
stylePathto hide only content that is not part of the behavior under test. - The test is too sensitive to harmless rendering variation. Consider a justified color threshold or differing-pixel limit. Keep the allowance narrow enough to catch the dark-mode defects that matter, and review failures rather than treating tolerance as a substitute for stable capture conditions.
- Snapshots change after a browser or platform change. Generate and review the reference images under the intended browser and platform. If the project deliberately covers different environments, keep their expectations distinct.
