For a same-page link, check the URL hash and that the target exists. These checks answer different questions; none alone proves every possible destination is reachable.
Choose the behavior your test needs to verify
“Anchor link works” can mean several things. Pick the assertion that matches the requirement rather than treating an href check as proof that navigation succeeds.

Cypress’s first end-to-end test guide demonstrates clicking a link and checking the URL. Its cy.url() command yields the active full URL, and chained assertions retry until they pass or time out. Use a configured baseUrl where possible so exact URL expectations do not depend on a hard-coded host or port.
Test navigation by clicking the link
When the user journey includes clicking a link, assert the resulting location and a meaningful piece of the destination page. Replace the example selector, route, and heading with values from your application.

})The URL assertion checks that the browser location changed as expected; the DOM assertion checks that the referenced content is present. If the requirement is that a visitor can see the target after navigating, assert the visibility or other relevant state explicitly. A URL-only check does not establish that the target is visible.
Cypress documents .click() as an action. The page may rerender or remove the clicked element, so query from cy again for assertions about the resulting state instead of continuing a chain from the clicked element. See the Cypress click reference.
Test same-page fragment links
A fragment such as #pricing identifies a location in the current document. Check the hash and the target element separately:

cy.get('#pricing').should('exist')cy.location('hash') focuses the assertion on the fragment; cy.url() instead returns the full active URL. If scrolling to the target is part of the requirement, test that behavior too. The presence of the hash and element does not itself prove the target is in view. Assert the declared href without navigating
If the requirement is that a link points to a particular address, assert the attribute directly. This isolates markup correctness from the destination server’s availability. Cypress recommends this approach for external sites that your team does not control, rather than making a test depend on a live third-party page. See the Cypress cross-origin testing guide.

If the application intentionally generates relative URLs or derives destinations from test data, validate the appropriate path or fragment against that data. A loose substring assertion can pass for an incorrect destination that merely contains the same text.

Handle internal and external destinations differently
Internal routes
For a normal same-origin link, click it and check both the route and identifying destination content:

cy.get('h1').should('contain', 'Account')The URL confirms the navigation result; the heading provides evidence that the expected page loaded. Use a stable, application-owned selector for the link where possible. Cypress’s selector guidance explains why tests should make clear which element is being manipulated.

For an uncontrolled external destination, verify the configured href instead of relying on a live remote site. When the destination origin is under your control and testing that page is necessary, Cypress provides cy.origin(); consult the cross-origin testing guide for the supported flow. The guide also notes that secure-to-insecure navigation can fail and may indicate a real mixed-content security problem. Do not disguise that issue as a test workaround.

Check generated anchors across a page
For generated content or navigation, iterate over the intended link set and report enough context to identify failures. This example checks for an href and rejects values containing undefined:

})This verifies markup values, not whether every URL returns a successful network response. If the selector is expected to match at least one anchor, an empty set can fail before these integrity assertions run. Decide deliberately how pages with no content links should behave: scope the check only to pages expected to contain links, or use a selector that includes a known-present element when that matches the test’s purpose. Cypress’s older anchor-link testing example also highlights the need to account for empty link sets and include nearby text to make failures easier to diagnose.

- The URL never matches: Confirm the test is exercising the intended link and that the expected route or fragment is correct. Prefer retryable URL assertions such as
cy.url().should(...)over a fixed sleep. - The target assertion fails after a click: Query the target again from
cy; the click may have caused a rerender or removed the original element. Check that the asserted selector identifies the actual destination state. - An href test passes but navigation is wrong: The attribute check only establishes the declared value. Add a click and resulting URL and DOM assertions if the user journey is the requirement.
- An external-link test is flaky: If the third-party destination is not under your control, assert its href instead of depending on its availability or behavior.
- A bulk scan fails on a page with no anchors: Treat the empty set as a specific case rather than assuming every page has content links.
- A cross-origin navigation fails between HTTPS and HTTP: Investigate mixed content rather than suppressing the failure without understanding it.
Cypress documents automatic retries for URL assertions in its URL command reference. A condition-based assertion is generally more meaningful than an arbitrary delay because it waits for the state under test.

Frequently asked questions
Does checking an href prove the link works?
No. It confirms the value declared in the markup. To verify the navigation a user experiences, click the link and assert the resulting URL and relevant destination state.
Should a fragment link be tested as a new route?
Usually not: a fragment such as #pricing identifies a location in the current document. Check the hash and the target; test scrolling separately if it is required.
Can a bulk anchor test verify that URLs resolve?
No. Iterating over anchors can find missing or malformed href values, but it does not establish that every destination responds successfully.
