To test your app on an iPhone before App Store review, connect or pair the iPhone with your Mac, select it as the run destination in Xcode, configure development signing, then choose Product > Run. For feedback from other people, distribute a beta through TestFlight or, for a small group of known devices, use Apple’s registered-device distribution route.
Run the app directly on your iPhone from Xcode
This is usually the quickest option for the developer’s own device: Xcode installs and launches the app, and provides a debugging session. Apple’s physical-device instructions cover pairing, run destinations, signing and running.
- Pair the iPhone with your Mac. Connect it with a cable, or pair wirelessly through Xcode’s Device Hub.
- Choose the app and device. Open the project in Xcode, select the scheme containing the app target, and choose the iPhone from the run-destination menu.
- Set up development signing. In Signing & Capabilities, select a development team. With Automatically manage signing enabled, Xcode can register the device and create a development provisioning profile. You must first sign in with an Apple account.
- Enable Developer Mode if prompted. The iPhone may ask you to enable Developer Mode for locally installed apps.
- Build, install and launch. In Xcode, select Product > Run. Xcode builds the app for the iPhone, installs it and starts the debugging session.
This workflow depends on having the Mac and signing setup available; it is suited to development and debugging, rather than inviting a group of testers to install builds independently.
Choose how to distribute builds to other testers
Use direct Xcode installation for hands-on debugging, TestFlight when you want to gather beta feedback from a broader group, or registered-device distribution when the testers’ devices are a limited, known set.

| Route | Best fit | What you do | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct Xcode run | Your own iPhone and interactive debugging | Pair the phone, select it as the run destination, sign and run the app. | Requires your Mac and development signing setup. Apple’s Xcode instructions. |
| Registered-device distribution | A limited group using known devices | Register the devices, archive and export the app, then distribute the package to those devices. | Only registered devices are covered; applicable installations require Developer Mode. Apple’s registered-device instructions. |
| TestFlight | Beta testing with internal or external testers | Upload a build to App Store Connect, provide beta information, create groups, assign builds and invite testers. | The first build added to an external testing group is sent to beta App Review; later builds may not need a full review. A build can be tested for up to 90 days. Apple’s TestFlight overview. |
Use TestFlight for a wider beta
Apple’s current App Store Connect Help documentation, accessed October 7, 2026, lists limits of up to 100 internal testers and 10,000 external testers. TestFlight builds can be tested for up to 90 days. These are published program limits and may change. The first build added to an external testing group is sent to App Review; subsequent builds may not require a full review. See TestFlight overview.
In App Store Connect, provide beta app information and a feedback contact, upload the build, create tester groups, assign the build and invite testers. Then collect feedback and monitor sessions and crashes. Apple’s App Store Connect workflow describes how beta testing fits into the larger submission process.

- 【Comprehensive Cable & Charger Tester】 Easily test Apple Lightning cables, USB-C data cables, and power adapters. It's compatible with iPhones, iPads, and other Lightning devices, and identifies original versus third-party accessories to ensure safe charging performance. (Note: The device can only read USB-C cables with a built-in E-Marker chip. It won't be able to read information from cables that don't have one.)
- 【Lightning Connector Authentication】 Reads Apple Lightning connector serial numbers and chips (Original, Certified, Taiwan, or Inferior). Detects essential protection features including ESD (electrostatic protection), OVP (over-voltage protection), and OCP (over-current protection). Perfect for verifying cable authenticity and quality.
- 【Data Cable Read & E-Marker Detection】 It detects whether a cable has an E-Marker chip and displays the information. If a cable lacks an E-Marker chip, the device won't respond or show any information.
- 【Charger & Adapter Analysis】 Tests USB-C/Lightning power adapters, supporting PD (Power Delivery) and QC2.0/3.0 fast charging protocols. Measures open voltage, rise/fall time, and maximum output wattage. Detects if the charger is original, certified, or copycat, helping users avoid unsafe adapters.
- 【Advanced Charging Simulation】 Features PD Decoy and QC Decoy functions, allowing manual switching of output voltages for in-depth charger testing. Provides real-time voltage/current graphs under load, ensuring reliable performance for phones, tablets, and other electronics.
Use registered-device distribution for a small, known group
Apple also documents a route for distributing an exported app build to registered devices without beta app review. It requires registering the devices and exporting the build; it is not a way to distribute to arbitrary devices. Follow Apple’s registered-device distribution instructions for the workflow and applicable Developer Mode requirements.
What to test on a physical iPhone
A simulator is useful for debugging and checking different configurations, but it does not reproduce every hardware feature or the performance of a physical device. Test features that depend on iPhone hardware on an actual device. Apple recommends physical-device testing to verify that an app behaves as intended; see Running your app on simulated or physical devices.

Test against the devices and operating-system versions your app claims to support. A single iPhone cannot establish compatibility across every supported combination. Apple notes that behavior can differ with device model and OS version, migrations, keychain and defaults state, memory, power and network conditions. Its release-build guidance recommends testing release builds on real devices and across supported device and OS versions.
Prioritize realistic release checks
- Install cleanly, and test an upgrade path if the app has existing user data.
- Exercise the app’s critical flows on the oldest and newest supported device and OS combinations available to your team.
- Test hardware-dependent features on the iPhone rather than assuming simulator behavior is sufficient.
- Try realistic network conditions, including the availability and connectivity scenarios relevant to the app.
- Check state and resource-sensitive behavior, including migrations, keychain or defaults data, memory and power conditions.
If testing every combination is impractical, narrow the device and OS combinations you support; Apple gives raising the deployment target as one way to do that. The right test matrix follows the app’s supported range and features, not the fact that it ran on one phone.

Testing is separate from App Review
Testing before submission can uncover problems and gather feedback, but it does not guarantee that Apple will approve the release. TestFlight beta review, where required for external testing, is separate from submitting the release build for App Review through App Store Connect when you are ready.
