To test an Ethernet cable after installation, disconnect it from network equipment and test both ends with a tool suited to what you need to know. A basic wiremap tester can find common wiring faults; a qualification tester checks whether the link can support a target speed or application; and a certification tester checks an installed link against a specified cabling standard. A pass on one type of test does not mean the same thing as a pass on another.

Choose the test that answers your question

Your question Test to use What the result tells you What it does not prove
Are the conductors connected correctly? Verification or wiremap tester Basic connectivity and, depending on the model, faults such as opens, shorts, or crossed wires. That the cable meets a full Category or Class specification.
Can the run support my intended speed or application? Qualification tester Whether the link supports the applications or speeds covered by that tool and its test settings. Formal standards compliance.
Does the installed link meet a specified cabling category or class? Certification tester Measured results against the selected standard, test limit, and link configuration. Compliance with a different standard, limit, or setup than the one tested.
Could the problem involve the network or PoE, not just wiring? A cable and network tester with those functions May provide added diagnostics such as ping, switch identification, or PoE information. That a basic wiremap tester includes these features; capabilities vary by model.

Verification, qualification, and certification are distinct levels of testing. Fluke Networks explains the roles and limits of each in its Network Engineer Tools and Troubleshooting Guide and Overview: Cable Testing. A link light or successful device connection is not a standards-based certification result.

How to run a basic wiremap test

  1. Isolate the cable run. Unplug both ends from switches, routers, computers, and other network equipment before connecting a cable tester.
  2. Check the tester’s compatibility. Confirm it supports the cable and connector types you installed, then follow its instructions for connecting the transmitter and remote to opposite ends.
  3. Run the wiremap or verification test. Review the result for continuity and wiring faults the tester can detect, such as an open conductor, short, or crossed wire.
  4. Interpret a pass narrowly. A pass means the run passed the checks that this instrument performs. It does not certify a Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6A, or other category installation.

Fluke’s cable-tester guidance describes connecting the tester’s transmitter and remote to opposite ends and running the test. The manufacturer also outlines tester types and common wiring faults in its Copper and Ethernet Cable Testers guide.

When to qualify a run for speed or application

If your question is whether the installed link will support a particular Ethernet speed or application, use a qualification-capable tester and select a supported test setting for that intended use. Qualification assesses capability; it is not official proof that the cabling meets a category or class standard. The supported speeds and applications depend on the tester, so check its specifications rather than assuming any tester can qualify every link.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

When certification is necessary

Use a standards-based certification tester when a project, client, or cabling warranty requires evidence that the installed link meets a specified Category or Class. Select the correct standard and test limit, and use the setup and adapters appropriate to the link being tested. There is no single test limit or configuration that applies to every installation.

Certification measures parameters specified by the relevant standard. Common datacom cable measurements include length and wiremap, as well as transmission and electrical characteristics such as attenuation, NEXT, DC loop resistance, and return loss. The required measurements vary with the standard and selected limit.

Permanent-link testing

A permanent-link test is used to certify the fixed cabling infrastructure and is typically performed during installation. Fluke Networks explains the purpose and test methods in Twisted Pair Certification Testing Methods. Do not substitute a patch-cord test or basic wiremap check for the required permanent-link configuration.

Keep the results

Save the certification report with the project records when handover or warranty documentation matters. Fluke says many structured-cabling manufacturers require certification for warranties; requirements differ, so confirm the specific warranty terms rather than assuming certification is required in every case.

What to do if the cable passes but the connection still fails

A wiremap pass only addresses the wiring checks performed by that tester. If the connection still does not work, the remaining issue may involve network equipment, configuration, patch cords, PoE, or a connected device. Use suitable network diagnostics for those possibilities; some tools provide separate ping, switch, and PoE functions, but these features are not universal to basic cable testers.

Which tester should you use?

Search for an Ethernet cable tester, but check the test class and functions before choosing. A basic wiremap tester is appropriate for finding common termination faults. Choose a qualification tester when you need to assess support for a target application or speed. For standards-compliance evidence, use a certifier configured for the required standard and link type.

For a one-off commercial installation, renting a suitable certifier or hiring a qualified cabling contractor may be more practical than purchasing a professional tester. Confirm that the service will test the correct link type and provide the report your project or warranty requires.

As one higher-capability example, Fluke says its LinkIQ validates cable performance up to 10 Gb/s using frequency-based measurements and wiremap, and offers ping, nearest-switch, and PoE information. Those are manufacturer-stated capabilities, not a substitute for checking whether a particular test meets your project’s certification requirement.
