Test a used PS5 Pro with the seller present: inspect it without opening the case, exercise the included DualSense, read a known-good supported game disc if a drive is fitted, then run a game and watch for temperature warnings or instability. A short inspection can reveal faults, but it cannot guarantee long-term reliability.
What to bring and check before powering on
Ask the seller to provide the console, its power and HDMI cables, the included DualSense controller, and—if the console is meant to include one—a detachable disc drive. Bring or borrow a known-good PS5 game disc. A disc you already know works is more useful than an unverified one.
- Confirm the unit is a PS5 Pro and inspect the exterior, covers, ports, cables, and controller for cracks, damage, liquid residue, missing parts, or signs of tampering.
- Do not open the enclosure. Sony’s PS5 Pro Safety Guide warns, “To avoid electrical shock, do not open the enclosure. Refer servicing to qualified personnel only.” Sony’s 2024 PS5 Pro engineering article also cautions against attempting its teardown at home.
- Ask whether the detachable drive is included. The PS5 Pro has a disc-drive port, and Sony’s manuals index lists a CFI-ZDD1 Disc Drive instruction manual. Check that the exact drive and console are compatible before buying; a console without a drive cannot demonstrate disc-reading function.
- Place the console where air can circulate. Sony describes the PS5 Pro’s intake and exhaust as using the rear and bottom surfaces, so avoid a closed cabinet or anything covering those areas.
- Ask the seller to power it on and show that it reaches the home screen. If the seller will not allow a basic working demonstration, treat that as a purchase risk rather than assuming the console works.
Test the DualSense controller
Use the controller in a game or a system screen that responds to input. Test the sticks slowly across their range and release them to center; a controller that moves on its own, jitters, has a dead area, or catches may have a problem. Repeat the check rather than relying on a single brief movement.
- Connect the controller to the PS5 with USB if it is not already paired, then check that it responds wirelessly after pairing.
- Test both analog sticks, including L3 and R3 clicks; each face button; all D-pad directions; L1/R1 and L2/R2; the touch pad; PS and mute buttons; and vibration. Check speaker or headset behavior if those features matter to you.
- Connect it by USB and confirm it charges. Observe whether it remains connected wirelessly during the inspection. This checks basic charging and connection behavior, not battery capacity or remaining battery life.
If pairing is unclear, Sony’s DualSense troubleshooting guide describes a reset: turn off the PS5, disconnect the controller, hold its reset button for at least five seconds, then reconnect it with the official USB cable and press PS. A reset may help with pairing, but it does not prove the sticks, buttons, or battery are healthy. Persistent problems warrant troubleshooting or repair.

Check whether the disc drive reads and ejects discs
Test with a known-good PS5 game disc and verify more than just insertion: the drive should accept it, the console should recognize it, the game should launch and continue reading, and the disc should eject normally. If possible, repeat with a second known-good supported disc. Sony says that for a console standing vertically on its stand, the labeled side faces left when inserting a disc.
- Insert a known-good PS5 game disc and wait for it to appear in the system interface.
- Launch the game and allow it to load; check for read errors or repeated interruptions.
- Eject the disc and confirm the mechanism releases it normally. If available, repeat the sequence with another supported game disc.
One failed disc does not establish that the drive is faulty. Sony recommends cleaning dirt or fingerprints with a soft, clean cloth and trying another game, Blu-ray disc, or DVD. A scratched, damaged, or unsupported disc can imitate a drive problem. Sony also says PS5 consoles cannot play burned discs or audio CDs, so neither is a valid test. The PS5 Pro Safety Guide lists supported PS5-format Ultra HD Blu-ray and other disc formats, with territorial restrictions potentially applying to media.

If one disc fails but another supported, known-good disc works, suspect the first disc. If several known-good supported discs fail, or loading and ejection repeatedly behave abnormally, treat the drive as suspect. Do not remove covers or turn on and play the console with a cover off; Sony’s stuck-disc guidance says not to do so. A stuck-disc recovery is not an inspection test—leave it to the owner or qualified service.
Check for overheating and instability
With the console in a ventilated position, start a game and let it run while you observe normal operation. Look for an on-screen high-temperature warning, an unexpected shutdown, freezes, or repeated instability. Do not block airflow or deliberately heat the console.

Sony’s PS5 Pro Safety Guide specifies an operating temperature range of 5 °C to 35 °C. This is the stated operating range, not an internal-component temperature reading or a do-it-yourself pass/fail threshold. Sony does not publish a required number of minutes for a used-console overheating test in the cited guidance, so there is no official timed stress-test standard to follow.
Some fan sound or warm exhaust by itself is not an official failure threshold. Sony’s mechanical design lead, Shinya Tsuchida, said, “PS5 Pro is a high performing console, so it requires more air to cool it down,” and described air intake and exhaust through the rear and bottom surfaces. The useful signs during a buyer’s check are warnings and instability, not a guess based on touch or sound alone.

If a temperature warning appears, stop the game and power the console down, let it cool, and check that it is in a ventilated spot with airflow areas unobstructed. Repeated warnings or shutdowns are a reason to walk away or arrange qualified service. Sony lists overheating among its PS5 Pro troubleshooting topics.

Judge the checks together rather than treating one questionable disc or an uncharged controller as a confirmed console fault. A fault that repeats across more than one known-good test is more concerning. Before paying, make sure the seller gives you enough time to complete the checks and clarify what happens if a fault appears after the sale; a brief demonstration cannot establish long-term reliability.
