For Cypress component tests, wrap the connected component in React-Redux’s Provider and give it a new Redux store created for that test. Seed that store with preloaded state or dispatch setup actions before mounting. For end-to-end tests, normally exercise the app through its visible behavior; expose the store to Cypress only when direct inspection or dispatch is genuinely necessary.

Choose component testing or end-to-end testing

These test types answer different questions. A component test gives you control over the component’s store and starting state. An end-to-end (E2E) test checks the application as it runs in a browser, with Redux wired as it is in normal use.

Test type Use it for Redux setup Prefer this assertion
Cypress component test Focused behavior of a connected component A cy.mount wrapper with a fresh store, optionally seeded for the scenario What the component displays or does after an interaction
Cypress E2E test A workflow through the running application The application’s normal initialization; expose the store only when there is a specific need Visible UI and public browser behavior, such as network activity

Cypress’s usual E2E approach is to interact through browser-facing behavior such as the DOM, network, and storage. Its FAQ describes direct app or store access as an option when those public interfaces are insufficient, not the default. See the Cypress FAQ.

Set up component tests with a fresh store

Create a store factory and use it to create a distinct store for each test. Do not import and reuse one mutable store across specs or tests: dispatched actions can leave state behind and make results order-dependent. Cypress’s React examples show a custom mount command that wraps the component in a Redux Provider and accepts a store.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Define a store factory

Adapt the imports and reducer setup to your application. The essential point is that setupStore creates a new store whenever it is called.

import { configureStore } from '@reduxjs/toolkit'
import rootReducer from '../../src/store/rootReducer'

export const setupStore = (preloadedState) =>
  configureStore({
    reducer: rootReducer,
    preloadedState,
  })

Add a Provider-wrapped Cypress mount command

In your Cypress component support file, wrap the component in Provider. The default parameter creates a fresh store when a test does not supply one; a test can pass an explicitly seeded store when needed.

import { mount } from 'cypress/react'
import { Provider } from 'react-redux'
import { setupStore } from '../../src/store/setupStore'

Cypress.Commands.add('mount', (component, options = {}) => {
  const { reduxStore = setupStore(), ...mountOptions } = options

  return mount(
    <Provider store={reduxStore}>{component}</Provider>,
    mountOptions
  )
})

Use the mount import appropriate to your installed Cypress version and project configuration. Cypress’s documented pattern is the Provider wrapper and injectable initialized store; the names and paths above are illustrative and should match your app.

Seed the scenario the test is meant to cover

Use preloaded state when the scenario is defined by a starting state. Dispatch an action on the new store before mounting when the action itself is a convenient way to establish the starting condition. Keep the test focused on behavior after mount if the setup action is not what you intend to test.

import Profile from '../../src/Profile'
import { setupStore } from '../../src/store/setupStore'
import { setUser } from '../../src/store/userSlice'

it('shows the signed-in user name', () => {
  const store = setupStore()
  store.dispatch(setUser({ name: 'Ada Lovelace' }))

  cy.mount(<Profile />, { reduxStore: store })
  cy.contains('Ada Lovelace').should('be.visible')
})

This tests the connection between Redux logic and rendered UI: it does not mock a selector or React-Redux hook. Cypress’s Redux component example uses this general approach of initializing a store before mounting and asserting the displayed profile.

Test end-to-end behavior through the app

For E2E tests, start the app with its ordinary store setup and perform the workflow through the browser. Assert what a user can observe rather than reaching into Redux for every intermediate state. If data comes from an external API, mock that network boundary where useful; this preserves the real reducer, selector, and component integration while keeping the scenario controlled.

Expose Redux deliberately only when needed

If a diagnostic check or a hard-to-reach state makes direct store access worthwhile, expose an application reference and store from app code under a controlled test-only condition. Then retrieve it through cy.window(). The app must explicitly provide that reference; Cypress cannot infer or access an arbitrary Redux store automatically.

// Application bootstrap: expose only in the test environment.
if (window.Cypress) {
  window.store = store
}

// Cypress E2E test
cy.window().its('store').should('exist')
cy.window().then((win) => {
  win.store.dispatch(setUser({ name: 'Ada Lovelace' }))
})
cy.contains('Ada Lovelace').should('be.visible')

Adapt the condition to your build and test setup, and avoid exposing the store in production. A direct dispatch can be useful for diagnostics or setup, but a test that dispatches state and then asserts only the DOM may be clearer as a component test with an injected store.

Keep Redux integration real

The Redux team recommends integration tests for connected React behavior: render with a real store and Provider, exercise the interface, and verify user-visible outcomes. Mock external requests as needed rather than mocking selector imports or React-Redux hooks, which can bypass the behavior the test is intended to cover. Keep isolated unit tests for complex pure logic where they add value.

Redux’s guidance also names Vitest Browser Mode and React Testing Library for connected-component testing. Those are alternatives in its guidance, not a restriction on using Cypress. See Redux: Writing Tests.

Troubleshoot common Redux/Cypress test failures

  • “Could not find react-redux context value” or a related missing Provider error: The mounted component is not under Provider. Route it through the custom mount command or wrap it explicitly.
  • A test passes alone but fails in the full suite: Check for a shared store instance or state modified by a previous test. Create a new store from a factory inside each test.
  • The component renders default or empty data: Confirm that the test passed the intended store to the mount command, or that the preloaded-state shape matches the reducer tree. If using a setup action, dispatch it before mounting.
  • cy.window().its('store') cannot find the store: The running application has not exposed a reference on window, or the exposure condition is false in that test build. Add a deliberate test-only exposure or use public UI behavior instead.
  • An E2E test is brittle because it checks internal state: Prefer asserting the rendered result or network behavior. Reserve direct state inspection for cases where it answers a question that the public interface cannot.
  • A test mocks selectors or hooks and misses a real integration problem: Replace those mocks with a real store and Provider, then mock only the external boundary that needs control.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is to capture a page screenshot while documenting or debugging a UI, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a replacement for Redux state tests. Its API returns an image or PDF from one GET request. Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. AI agents can take screenshots through its MCP server. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

For example, with your API key:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot"
  -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY
  --data-urlencode url=https://example.com
  -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters. ScreenshotNeo is built by Yorker Media. Sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Cypress test a Redux store without mounting a React component?

Yes. An E2E test can reach a store that the running app deliberately exposes, using `cy.window()`. For normal app behavior, UI and browser-facing assertions are usually the better interface.

Should I use preloaded state or dispatch an action before mounting?

Use whichever setup best expresses the scenario: preloaded state for a defined starting snapshot, or a dispatched action on a new store when that action is a convenient way to arrange it.
