Check the A-number printed on the underside of an AirPods Pro earbud—or find it in your connected iPhone or iPad’s Settings—and match it to Apple’s model list. That number identifies the earbuds. Check the charging case separately if you need to know whether it has Lightning or USB-C, because a case can be a replacement or belong to a different version.
AirPods Pro generation by earbud model number
Apple’s identification guide maps these A-numbers to AirPods Pro models and introduction years. The 2022 and 2023 entries are both AirPods Pro 2; Apple lists them separately for their different case versions, not as separate generations. Apple’s AirPods identification guide

How to find the A-number
On an iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings and tap Bluetooth, or tap the AirPods’ name in Settings.
- Find your AirPods in the device list and tap More Info.
- Read the model number in the device details. If the AirPods are not listed, pair them with the device first.
Apple also documents a path for older connected Apple devices: open Settings > General > About, then select the AirPods name. Apple’s identification steps
On the earbuds
Look for the small model number beginning with “A” printed on the underside of each earbud. Match that number to the table above. If the left and right earbuds show different numbers, record both: that may indicate a mixed set, such as replacement earbuds. Apple’s identification guide does not describe a specific procedure for diagnosing mixed pairs.

Check the charging case separately
The case has its own model number, so use it to identify the case—not as a substitute for the earbud model number. Apple lists these case models: Apple’s case identification list

The original and 2021 MagSafe AirPods Pro 1 cases share model number A2190. Apple’s European guide uses different final-four serial-number suffix pairs to distinguish those case variants; the A-number alone is not enough. Apple’s European AirPods identification guide

Because a charging case may have been replaced, inspect the earbuds and case independently. Apple’s guide includes case compatibility information; check it before ordering a replacement rather than assuming the case is the one originally supplied.

The AirPods and charging case share a primary serial number, printed on the underside of the charging-case lid. AirPods Pro 1 and AirPods Pro 2 earbuds also have individual serial numbers printed on the earbuds, but Apple says to use the primary case-lid serial number for service. Apple’s cited serial-number guidance does not establish serial lookup as proof that a product is genuine. For generation identification, use the earbud A-number instead.
