Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →To tell whether a Wi-Fi extender is working properly, check its router-link status, connect a device through it and confirm internet access, then compare the connection with the router’s Wi-Fi in the same location. A light showing “connected” is useful, but it does not prove the extender is improving coverage where you need it.
1. Check the extender’s link to the router
Use the indicator or status page that reports the connection between the extender and the main router. Light names and meanings vary by model, so check the device’s manual rather than relying on a universal color chart.
For TP-Link models, the Signal light is the relevant indicator after setup: a solid light means the extender is connected, while its color or bars can show the signal strength it receives from the router. TP-Link explains this in its extender status and placement guide. NETGEAR models may use Router Link and Client Link indicators; its support guidance for supported extenders describes green or amber on both as an expected working state.
Do not confuse a WPS or pairing light with an ongoing health check. On some TP-Link models the RE/WPS light remains on after setup; on others it turns off after a short time. Check the model-specific Signal indicator or management page instead, as described in TP-Link’s WPS-light guidance.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Check whether a device can get online through it
- Connect a phone or computer to the extender’s Wi-Fi network. If your setup uses a shared network name, check the connected access point in the device’s Wi-Fi details if available.
- Open a website or use another internet-dependent service. If it works, the extender has passed a practical connection test through to the router for that device at that time.
- If your extender has an Ethernet port and its setup supports client connections through that port, you can test with a wired device as well.
TP-Link recommends checking the extender’s management page for router and internet status as another confirmation. Its support guide summarizes the client test this way: “If your devices connected to the extender can access the Internet, your extender is successfully connected to your router.” That test confirms a working path; it does not establish that the extender is fast enough or well placed for your needs.
3. Find out whether it actually helps in the weak-signal area
Test in the room or spot where coverage has been a problem. With the same phone or computer in the same location, compare its connection through the extender with its connection directly to the router. Keep other high-bandwidth activity off during the comparison so it is easier to interpret. TP-Link recommends this same-device comparison and cautions that a stronger-looking Wi-Fi signal can still produce slower downloads: how to check extender performance.

Record what you compared: the device, location, whether it was connected to the extender or router, and any relevant conditions. A single speed test is a diagnostic snapshot, not a guarantee. Internet service, router condition, device capability, Wi-Fi band, walls and interference can all change the result. A Wi-Fi icon or stronger signal display alone does not show that internet performance has improved.
4. Improve placement if the router link is weak
Start with the extender roughly halfway between the router and the area with poor coverage, but keep it where it can still receive a stable signal from the router. If its status indicator shows a weak router link, move it closer to the router and repeat the client and performance tests.

- Place it around the router’s height rather than on the floor.
- Avoid corners and locations blocked by walls or large objects.
- Keep it away from masonry, metal surfaces, mirrors and electronics that may interfere with the signal.
These are placement principles, not a fixed distance prescription. The useful position depends on the building, router, extender and obstacles; use the link indicator and retest after moving it. See TP-Link’s placement recommendations.
If you cannot get a stable wireless link because of distance or obstacles, a compatible extender may support access-point mode: connect it to the router with Ethernet and configure it as an access point. Confirm that your particular model supports this mode before relying on it; the wired setup is described in TP-Link’s guide.

5. Troubleshoot based on how many devices are affected
If every device connected through the extender is offline
- Check whether the router itself can access the internet.
- Inspect the extender’s router-link indicator or management status.
- Move the extender closer to the router if its received link is weak, then retest.
- Restart or reconnect the extender according to the instructions for its model.
An extender depends on the router and its internet connection; it does not provide internet independently. TP-Link makes this distinction in its guide to devices disconnecting from an extender.
If only one device has trouble
Connect that device directly to the router. If it also fails there, the issue may be with the device or its network settings rather than the extender. You can also remove the device’s saved Wi-Fi profile and reconnect to the appropriate network.

If the problem continues
Before contacting the manufacturer, note the extender’s exact model and hardware revision, its firmware version, the router model, the affected Wi-Fi band, and whether one or multiple clients are affected. TP-Link’s troubleshooting guidance recommends gathering model and network details for support.
