Check the exact model and hardware revision of each device, then look for explicit Wi-Fi 8 or IEEE 802.11bn support in its manufacturer specifications and verify the finished product in the Wi-Fi Alliance certification database. A router, a phone, and a laptop must be checked separately. As of October 7, 2026, IEEE still lists 802.11bn as an in-process project, so a Wi-Fi 8 label may refer to draft-based hardware rather than certification against a finalized standard.

What does Wi-Fi 8 mean?

Wi-Fi 8 is the consumer-facing name associated with IEEE 802.11bn, the Ultra High Reliability (UHR) project. IEEE currently lists P802.11bn as an in-process project; its later milestones are forecasts, not completed approvals. Check the IEEE 802.11 timeline for the current project status.

Hardware announcements, product specifications, retail availability, and certification are different signals. A vendor may describe a chipset or platform as Wi-Fi 8-capable while the finished router or client has not been released or certified. Qualcomm projects final IEEE approval in 2028 and Wi-Fi Alliance certification in January 2028, but those are vendor forecasts, not confirmation that certification has occurred. The Qualcomm Wi-Fi 8 overview describes its expectations; the Wi-Fi Alliance certification database is where to check actual product records.

How do I know if my router supports Wi-Fi 8?

  1. Find the exact model and hardware revision. Check the label on the router or its settings page. A similar model name, suffix, or different hardware revision may have different capabilities.
  2. Open the manufacturer’s specification page for that exact product. Look for an explicit Wi-Fi 8 or IEEE 802.11bn statement. Note whether the manufacturer says support is based on draft specifications. A brand-level announcement or a chip inside a platform is not enough to establish the retail router’s capabilities.
  3. Search for the finished product in the Wi-Fi Alliance certification database. Use the product name or model and check the listed generation and features. Do not treat a forecast for when certification might begin as evidence that a model passed.
  4. Check release and regional availability. A roadmap is a plan, not proof of shipment. A May 28, 2026 Tom’s Hardware report described TP-Link’s tentative schedule for its Archer 8 router as October 2026, with later plans for mesh and travel products. That report does not establish that any of those products actually launched or gained certification. Verify current official product pages and certification records.

Chip announcements are useful evidence that silicon is being developed, but they do not prove a particular router is available, final, or certified. For example, Broadcom’s BCM6718 product brief dated May 18, 2026 specifies IEEE 802.11bn (Wi-Fi 8) Release 1.0 compliance for access-point silicon and also lists support for Wi-Fi 7, Wi-Fi 6/6E, and earlier generations. That describes a component, not the certification status or final feature set of every product built with it. Qualcomm’s F8 platform page likewise describes planned compliance based on draft specifications: Qualcomm F8 networking platform.

Does my phone or laptop support Wi-Fi 8?

Check the phone, laptop, or other client device’s own specifications; router support does not add Wi-Fi 8 capability to a client. Search the manufacturer’s documentation for the exact model and revision, and look for an explicit 802.11bn or Wi-Fi 8 listing. Where available, check the device’s driver or firmware documentation as well as its marketing page.

Then search the certification database for the client model itself. A Wi-Fi 8-capable chipset announcement does not establish that a finished phone or laptop supports the standard or has been certified. The sources available as of October 7, 2026 do not establish a currently certified consumer Wi-Fi 8 client model.

What if a product says it supports Wi-Fi 8 based on a draft?

Read the qualification carefully. Draft-era hardware may implement features intended for 802.11bn, but a statement that planned compliance is based on draft specifications is not equivalent to certification against a final standard. Qualcomm’s F8 platform page makes that distinction explicitly. Also distinguish a component’s listed features from the capabilities of the finished device: manufacturers select, implement, and document the hardware and software in their products.

For context, Broadcom’s BCM6718 product brief is a dated component specification, while Qualcomm’s F8 page describes planned draft-based compliance. Neither alone proves a specific consumer router or client is certified. Treat a product claim as strongest when the exact model has clear manufacturer documentation and a matching finished-product certification record.

Will my old devices work with a Wi-Fi 8 router?

Qualcomm says Wi-Fi 8 is intended to be backward compatible. Older devices can connect to a newer router using the generation their own hardware supports; that connection does not make them Wi-Fi 8 devices. To use Wi-Fi 8 between an access point and a client, both ends need suitable support and implementation.

How should I judge Wi-Fi 8 claims and performance figures?

Qualcomm attributes targets in the IEEE scope document of up to 25% higher throughput in challenging signal conditions, up to 25% lower latency at the 95th percentile, and up to 25% fewer dropped packets during access-point transitions. These are target improvements as reported by Qualcomm, not measured results from shipping Wi-Fi 8 products. Do not use the figures as a guarantee of what a specific router or device will deliver.

Its project page, updated September 30, 2026, is Wireless Broadband Alliance Wi-Fi 8 project. For a product decision, prioritize its exact model, certification status, role as router or client, documented bands and features, and actual regional release rather than chipset claims or projected dates.
