To find out what your PC may need, watch its resource use while you repeat the task that feels slow. In Windows, open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc and check CPU, Memory, Disk, and GPU during the slowdown. A high reading is a clue to investigate—not proof that buying a component will fix the problem.

Start with the task that is slow

Note what you were doing and what went wrong: starting Windows, opening files, loading a game, editing video, multitasking, or getting poor frame rates. A resource reading matters only in context. An idle PC may look fine even when it struggles under the workload that prompted the question.

Keep Task Manager open while you reproduce the problem. Microsoft recommends checking resource use and identifying heavy processes when troubleshooting performance; for a deeper view, Windows also includes Performance Monitor and its resource counters. See Microsoft’s Windows performance tips and performance troubleshooting guidance.

There is no universal percentage or time threshold in Microsoft’s guidance that proves a component needs an upgrade. Look for persistently high use that coincides with the slowdown, and note which app or process is responsible. Microsoft lists consistently high CPU, Memory, or Disk use as a reason to investigate, not a diagnosis by itself: signs it may be time for a new PC.

How to tell whether RAM is the issue

Memory is a stronger suspect when the PC slows during a task that uses a lot of memory, or when several apps together keep Memory use high. In Task Manager, check the Memory column and identify whether one app or a combination of open apps is consuming most of it. A high reading on its own does not show that more RAM is the right fix; first check whether a particular app, workload, or unnecessary process is responsible.

Capacity needs depend on the work. Microsoft says 16 GB or more might suit photo and video editing or other projects needing high performance; this is workload-specific guidance, not a universal minimum or a guarantee of smooth performance. Conversely, Windows 11’s published minimum is 4 GB of memory, but that minimum is not a recommendation for a demanding workload. Microsoft notes that some devices with less than 4 GB may have upgrade options. See Microsoft’s memory guidance and Windows 11 system requirements.

Before buying RAM, check the PC or motherboard documentation for supported memory generation, maximum capacity, available slots, and supported configurations. A kit that does not match the system may not work, even if its capacity looks suitable.

How to distinguish low storage space from a slow drive

Storage capacity and storage performance are separate questions. Check how much free space remains on the drive, then watch Disk use in Task Manager while repeating the slow task. Low free space is a reason to investigate and may call for freeing space; it does not by itself prove that you need a new drive. Microsoft includes “Your PC is low on storage space” among signs to consider, but that wording is not a diagnosis of drive speed.

Also identify whether the system drive is an HDD or SSD. HDDs and SSDs differ in how they store and access data; seeing high Disk activity at the same time as a slowdown is more informative than drive type alone. Microsoft’s overview of PC component terms explains the distinction.

Do not assume every PC needs NVMe storage. Microsoft specifies NVMe in connection with DirectStorage workloads, a feature-specific requirement rather than a universal Windows performance rule. Check the system’s drive interface and physical form factor before choosing a replacement. See Windows 11 requirements and DirectStorage.

How to tell whether the GPU is holding back a workload

GPU use is most relevant for graphics-heavy apps and games. Identify the graphics device in Task Manager, then compare it with the system requirements published by the app or game’s developer. Windows PCs may use integrated or discrete graphics; integrated graphics can suit one workload and fall short for another, so the mere presence of integrated graphics does not establish a need for a separate card. Microsoft’s GPU overview describes the component and its role.

Before selecting a graphics card, verify that it fits the particular PC: check case dimensions, power-supply capacity and connectors, the motherboard slot, and the software’s requirements. A card’s performance cannot be evaluated in isolation from those compatibility constraints.

Rule out causes that do not call for a component upgrade

Before spending money, check which process is using resources and whether startup apps, updates, low free space, or other software factors are contributing. Microsoft’s Windows performance tips cover several of these checks. If the readings during the affected task do not point clearly to RAM, storage, or GPU, do not infer that one of them needs replacing from the symptom alone.

Compare the likely upgrade against your PC and workload

If more than one component seems plausible, compare the task affected, the resource that stays under pressure while you do it, the app’s published requirements, and whether the PC supports the proposed part. There is no single universal score or threshold that compares RAM, storage, and GPU needs.

Option Evidence to look for during the slow task Compatibility checks
RAM Memory use stays high while the task or combination of apps slows down; identify the process using it. Memory generation, capacity limit, available slots, and supported configuration in the PC or motherboard documentation.
Storage Check free capacity separately from Disk activity; note whether activity coincides with the slowdown and whether the drive is an HDD or SSD. Drive interface and physical form factor supported by the system. NVMe is not a general requirement for every PC.
GPU A graphics-heavy app or game performs poorly; compare the installed graphics device with that software’s requirements. Case clearance, power-supply capacity and connectors, motherboard slot, and workload requirements.
