Check any available Content Credentials or watermark signal, search for earlier appearances, and inspect the original file’s metadata if you have it. Treat odd visual details and detector scores as leads to verify—not proof. A photo may be AI-generated or edited, stolen from a real person, or genuine but presented out of context; those are different claims.
What you can—and cannot—establish from a profile photo
An image check can provide evidence about a file’s origin, editing history, or earlier public appearances. It cannot, by itself, establish who owns the account or whether the person shown is who they claim to be. A genuine photo can be used by an impostor, and an AI-generated portrait alone does not prove an account is fraudulent.
Content Credentials, visual inspection, image-history searches, metadata, and automated detectors answer different questions. The strongest assessment comes from independent evidence that points in the same direction, not from stacking several weak clues from one image.
How to check an image carefully
- Record the context. Save the image as presented and note the account, post date, and claims attached to it. Avoid accusing or reporting someone based only on a quick visual impression.
- Search for earlier appearances. Try Google Lens or another reverse-image search to find other copies, crops, and pages where the image appears. Google’s “About this image” feature may show when similar images were first indexed, where an image may first have appeared, and other places it appears. Search coverage is incomplete: no results do not prove an image is new or AI-generated. Google’s overview of About this image and Gemini Help describe these kinds of checks.
- Look for provenance or a watermark. Check for Content Credentials where supported, or ask an available Google image tool about the image’s origin. Google announced on May 19, 2026 that verification of C2PA Content Credentials was starting in Gemini, with Search and Chrome planned in the coming months. Gemini Help also describes an in-app verification feature for signed-in users. Availability can vary by date, region, and account. Google’s announcement and Gemini Help have the current details.
- Inspect the original file’s metadata if you have it. The original may contain camera, date, or software information. Metadata can be absent, changed, copied, or stripped, and ordinary-looking metadata does not rule out editing. A screenshot or social-media download may not preserve the original file’s information. Google’s guidance discusses image checks, while C2PA implementation guidance explains how credentials can become separated from an asset.
- Inspect the full-size image for several anomalies. Look for small-detail errors, inconsistent lighting or shadows, and unnaturally repeated patterns. These can prompt further checking, but they are fallible—particularly in a small, compressed profile image. Google Gemini Help lists examples of visual clues.
- Treat detector output as one additional signal. Prefer tools that explain what they detect and their limits. A probability score is not a fact; do not use one alone to identify, report, or accuse a person. NIST’s identity-proofing guidance says image-analysis algorithms should be evaluated on genuine and manipulated samples for false positives and false negatives, with manual review supplementing automated analysis. That guidance concerns identity-proofing systems, not the accuracy of any particular consumer detector. NIST identity-proofing guidance
- Verify the account separately. If you suspect impersonation, compare the account with the person’s official site or established social accounts, check corroborating details, and use the platform’s reporting channels. An image-origin check cannot prove account ownership.
What Content Credentials and AI watermarks mean
C2PA Content Credentials can record an asset’s origin, editing history, and AI involvement in a cryptographically signed structure. The signature can make changes to the recorded credential detectable, but C2PA adoption is opt-in. An image without credentials has no such record; their absence is not evidence that the image was generated by AI. Credentials may also be lost when a workflow removes embedded manifests. A fingerprint can sometimes help locate a separately stored manifest, but a match is approximate and should be reviewed manually. C2PA’s explainer and implementation guidance describe these limits.

Credentials are evidence about recorded provenance, not an independent judgment that the depicted person or event is real. The C2PA Technical Working Group explains that Content Credentials do not provide value judgments about whether provenance data is true; they indicate whether it is well-formed, untampered, valid, and trusted under the signer trust model.
Google says SynthID embeds imperceptible watermarks in eligible media made with Google AI tools, and its verification features identify content made or edited by Google AI. A positive result is evidence of that system’s watermark. A negative result does not rule out use of another AI system, transformations that defeat detection, or synthetic media without that watermark. Google Gemini Help

| Content Credentials | Recorded origin, editing history, or AI involvement in a signed provenance record. | Opt-in; records can be absent or separated from the file, and do not independently prove the depicted person or event is real. C2PA explainer |

| Reverse-image search | Earlier public appearances, related copies, or possible sources and context. | Indexing is incomplete. An earlier appearance supports a timeline or context, not the identity of the person pictured or the absence of later edits. Google About this image |
| File metadata | File-level traces such as camera, date, or software information, when preserved. | Metadata may be stripped, altered, copied, or misleading; a downloaded copy may not be original. Google Gemini Help |
| Visual inspection | Possible inconsistencies that merit closer review. | Clues are fallible and especially hard to assess in small, compressed images. Google Gemini Help |
| Automated detector | A model’s classification or probability estimate for the image. | Performance varies; NIST guidance calls for testing on genuine and manipulated examples and human review. It does not establish the accuracy of a particular consumer tool. NIST guidance |
Before uploading someone’s face to a tool, consider whether it requires sign-in, what happens to the image, and whether uploading it is appropriate. A signed provenance record plus independently corroborated source history is stronger than several visual oddities or detector results derived from the same file.

There is no universal accuracy figure established here for detecting AI-generated profile photos. NIST’s August 2025 figures on face-morph detection concern a different problem: morph attacks and detectors, not AI-generated profile portraits. They should not be used as performance claims for consumer AI-image detectors. NIST’s face-morph guidance summary
