To work out whether an iPhone connection problem is coming from the phone, SIM, or carrier, combine the exact alert with a few checks: review the iPhone’s settings, check the SIM or eSIM line, and ask the carrier to verify your account and local network. “SOS,” “No Service,” and “Searching” describe the connection state; they do not identify the cause.
What the iPhone alert tells you—and what it doesn’t
Apple says “No Service” or “Searching” means the iPhone is not connected to a cellular network. “SOS” or “SOS only” likewise indicates it is not connected to its own carrier network. In the United States, Canada, and Australia, the phone may still be able to make emergency calls using other carrier networks; that does not mean ordinary cellular service is available.
These status-bar messages do not, by themselves, distinguish a temporary settings problem from a SIM, account, coverage, outage, or device issue. A specific “Invalid SIM” or “No SIM Card installed” alert points more directly to the SIM or its configuration, but still does not prove which component has failed. Apple’s SOS, No Service, or Searching troubleshooting guide and its Invalid SIM or No SIM guide outline the checks below.
Start with the phone-side checks
Try the simple connection and settings steps before concluding that hardware needs repair:

- Turn Airplane Mode on, wait at least 15 seconds, then turn it off.
- Restart the iPhone.
- Install any available iOS update.
- Connect to Wi-Fi, then open Settings > General > About and check whether a carrier-settings update is offered. A newly inserted SIM may require updated carrier settings.
If the problem remains, the results of these checks are useful context, but they do not establish that the phone itself is faulty.
Check whether the SIM or cellular line is active
For Dual SIM or eSIM
Open Settings > Cellular, tap the affected line, and make sure it is turned on. If the line is missing, contact the carrier: it may need to set up the eSIM or provide a physical SIM. For an international trip, also ask whether roaming is enabled for the relevant line and plan.

For a physical SIM
Remove and reinsert the SIM, then check that the tray closes properly. If the card is visibly damaged, or an “Invalid SIM” or “No SIM Card installed” alert persists, ask the carrier to test the SIM or provide a replacement. A carrier store may be able to test with another SIM. A SIM-eject tool is optional; this step applies only to iPhones using a physical SIM.
If the alert says “Invalid SIM”
Confirm that the cellular plan is active. You can also check Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock. Apple says an unlocked iPhone displays “No SIM restrictions.” An iPhone locked to a carrier can be used only with that carrier, so contact the carrier if the lock status does not match the SIM you are trying to use.

Ask the carrier to check what the iPhone cannot show you
Contact the carrier if the line or SIM may not be set up correctly, or if the phone has no service despite the basic checks. Ask it to verify:
- Whether the account is active and in good standing.
- Whether your location has coverage and whether there is a local outage.
- Whether the device is blocked or barred.
- Whether the plan is correct for the service you expect.
- Whether the SIM is valid or the eSIM is properly provisioned.
The carrier can check account, local network, and SIM or eSIM provisioning information that is not visible in the iPhone’s status bar. If you are travelling, ask it to confirm roaming for your plan and line.

When to suspect the iPhone and seek service
If the carrier confirms there is no account, coverage, outage, blocking, or SIM/eSIM provisioning issue and the iPhone still cannot connect, device trouble becomes more plausible. On iPhone models running iOS 18 or later, Apple says the Apple Support app can run additional diagnostics to help identify the source; diagnostics can inform the next step but do not, on their own, prove that a particular part has failed.
If the problem persists after the carrier clears its side, contact Apple or a qualified device service provider about possible hardware trouble. Service is a reasonable escalation at that point, not an automatic conclusion from seeing “SOS” or “No Service.”
