Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchTo tell whether an image was made with generative AI, check its original file for signed Content Credentials, then use a watermark checker that supports the likely generator. Corroborate those findings with the image’s source and context. A positive result can document a supported tool or recorded edit; a negative result does not prove the image is camera-made. Visual clues and generic detector scores are not conclusive.
Check the image in this order
- Preserve the best available copy. Use the original file rather than a screenshot or social-media preview when possible. Keep its source URL and the context in which it appeared. Editing, conversion, and sharing can remove metadata or weaken other signals.
- Inspect its Content Credentials. Open the file in a viewer that reads C2PA Content Credentials. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Research Integrity points to a free, open-source C2PA Viewer for examining origin, creator, and edit-history information. A record may identify a creator or tool, creation or edit details, and changes recorded by participating software. It describes the signed record—not every event that may have happened outside that chain. Learn about Content Provenance from the Office of Research Integrity.
- Check for a relevant provider watermark. If you suspect a particular generator, use a checker that supports its signals. OpenAI’s documentation and public verifier cover supported OpenAI provenance signals, including C2PA credentials and SynthID. This is not a universal AI-image detector: a negative result may mean a signal is missing, unsupported, stripped, degraded, or from another provider. OpenAI’s Content provenance documentation explains the supported signals.
- Look for platform history if available. In Google Photos on Android or iOS, open the image’s About panel and look for “How this was made.” For compatible files, the panel can summarize composition, edits, and recorded AI use. Google says the feature is not available for every file or on Google Photos Web, and it does not decide whether media is real or fake. Google Photos Help: How photos and videos were made.
- Corroborate the image and its claim. Look for the earliest known publication and other versions. Check whether reputable sources independently report the event, and compare the image’s details with reliable information about the place, people, or event. A provenance record cannot establish that the scene shown actually happened.
- Describe the result precisely. For example: “The file contains a valid credential indicating it was edited with [tool]” or “This checker found no supported signal.” Avoid saying a tool “proved” an image real or AI-made. If the image affects a consequential decision, seek expert review.
What a check can—and cannot—tell you
Images can be generated, AI-edited, or authentic camera captures, and those categories can overlap in a file’s history. A credential may record that an edit occurred, but it does not say whether the edit was ethical, deceptive, or material to the claim. The Office of Research Integrity notes that a credential can show an edit happened without explaining why.
| Evidence | What a positive finding supports | What a negative finding does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| C2PA Content Credentials | A signed, traceable record of origin or changes recorded by participating software. | That the image is human-made. Metadata may be lost through editing, conversion, or sharing; absence of a record is inconclusive. |
| Embedded watermark, such as SynthID | A supported signal associated with the provider or system whose checker recognizes it. | That no AI was used. The checker may not cover that provider, or transformations may affect the signal. |
| Platform creation history | For compatible files, a summary of recorded creation or editing details shown by that platform. | That the depicted event is true, or that every file will have a history available. |
| Visual inspection or a generic detector | A reason to investigate a specific detail or seek corroboration. | A reliable verdict on origin by itself. The primary sources reviewed do not establish a consumer detector accuracy rate that can be responsibly applied to an individual image. |
C2PA credentials are signed metadata; SynthID is an embedded watermark. They are different signal types, with different coverage and failure modes. A valid signal can be useful evidence about a tool or recorded history, but neither one independently verifies that the image depicts a real event. For a broader overview of technical approaches and their limits, see NIST’s overview of approaches to digital content transparency, published November 20, 2024 and updated April 8, 2026.
Choose a checker that matches the question
- C2PA Viewer: Use it to inspect Content Credentials. It does not check SynthID or every other watermark.
- OpenAI verifier: Use it for supported OpenAI signals, not as a universal detector. A “not detected” result cannot rule out OpenAI generation if evidence was removed or degraded, and it cannot rule out generation by another provider. OpenAI says uploaded files are not stored unless legally required and are not used to train its models; check the current verifier information before relying on that policy.
- Google Photos on Android or iOS: Check the About panel’s “How this was made” section for compatible files. The feature is not available on the web version or for every file, and it is a provenance summary—not a real-versus-fake judgment. See Google’s availability and feature details.
Google has also announced SynthID verification in Gemini and an AI Content Detection API for organizations. Availability, access, supported content, and rollout can change; consult Google’s announcement for the applicable details rather than assuming a feature is available to every user.

Why visual “tells” are not proof
Odd hands, reflections, shadows, or textures may prompt a closer look, but none proves AI origin. Conversely, a plausible-looking image is not necessarily a camera original. NIST treats detection as one part of a broader set of technical approaches—including provenance, watermarking, testing, and auditing—not as a single definitive solution. Use visual observations to identify questions to check against source material and independent reporting, not as a verdict.

How to report what you found
- Name the checker and the signal type it supports.
- Separate what the file records from what the image depicts.
- For a positive result, state the specific credential or watermark finding and the tool or history it indicates.
- For a negative result, say that no supported signal was found; do not infer that AI was not used.
- Keep the original file and source when possible, and note if you only had a screenshot or compressed copy.
