Check your device’s privacy indicator first, then open its privacy controls to see which app used the camera or microphone and review that app’s access. The indicator’s color and location depend on your device. If the activity came from a website, check the site’s permission in the browser as well as the operating system’s controls.
What a camera or microphone indicator tells you
A privacy indicator is the quickest way to notice that an app is using a sensor. Depending on your device, a privacy screen may also identify the app currently using it or show recent access.
That signal is evidence of sensor access; by itself, it does not establish that the app recorded, saved, or transmitted audio or video. If access is unexpected, identify the app in the operating system’s controls and revoke its permission if it does not need the sensor.
Check camera and microphone use on iPhone or iPad
On iOS 14 or later, an orange dot or square indicates microphone use. A green indicator means the camera is in use, either alone or together with the microphone. With the accessibility setting Differentiate Without Colour enabled, the microphone indicator may appear as an orange square. Apple notes that the indicator can appear even when the app is not in the foreground.

Desktop apps may not appear individually in Windows’ settings. Windows provides a broader control and a list of detected desktop apps in applicable settings, but Microsoft warns that desktop apps may not always be listed or may access devices through supported methods differently. Windows Hello is a documented exception: it can use the camera to sign in even when the camera app-access setting is off. Microsoft explains the indicators and these limitations in its Windows camera privacy guidance and Windows microphone privacy guidance.
