Unusually slow internet does not prove your router is part of a botnet. More useful clues are administrative logins you do not recognize, settings or accounts you did not change, and unexplained network traffic. Treat these as reasons to investigate—not as a diagnosis. There is no consumer symptom checklist here that can confirm a botnet infection on its own.

Signs that warrant checking your router

CISA guidance for network defenders recommends reviewing router logs and configurations for unexpected activity, especially administration access. These clues can justify investigating a possible compromise, but none confirms a botnet by itself.

  • Unrecognized administration activity: Router logs show management access or logins you cannot account for. See CISA’s guidance on reviewing router activity.
  • Settings or accounts have changed: The router has an unfamiliar administrator account, DNS setting, port-forwarding rule, or other configuration change. CISA advises looking for unusual router configurations in its 2025 network advisory.
  • Unexplained connections or traffic: Activity appears that you cannot explain by your household’s normal use. CISA recommends monitoring incoming and outgoing traffic for anomalies, but unusual traffic does not identify its cause or prove botnet membership. See CISA’s Internet Exposure Reduction Guidance.
  • The router is out of security support: An unsupported device is at greater risk because it may not receive fixes for newly discovered weaknesses. That status alone does not mean the router is infected; check the manufacturer’s support notices for your exact model.

Slow or unreliable internet is a weak clue on its own. Interference, an ISP outage, a failing router, or ordinary congestion can cause similar symptoms. The cited official material is largely for network operators and does not provide a validated home-router diagnostic test or a prevalence figure for infected home routers.

What to do if you suspect a compromise

  1. Contact the ISP or router maker from a device you believe is clean. Use a known phone number or official support site, and ask whether your exact model and firmware are still supported and what recovery procedure they recommend.
  2. Limit exposure while arranging help, if practical. If the router is actively behaving suspiciously, disconnect its internet/WAN connection. Keep the model name, firmware version, relevant timestamps, alerts, and screenshots or notes of unfamiliar log entries or settings.
  3. Follow the model-specific recovery instructions. Review the router’s logs and configuration with the ISP or manufacturer’s guidance. There is no universal consumer cleanup procedure established by the cited guidance, and a reboot or password change alone should not be assumed to remove a persistent compromise.
  4. Restore secure settings after recovery. Install the latest supported firmware, replace factory and administrative passwords with unique credentials, and disable remote administration and services you do not need where the router allows it. CISA recommends patching, changing default passwords, and reducing unnecessary internet exposure in its exposure-reduction guidance. Older US-CERT/CISA home-router guidance also recommends changing factory credentials.
  5. Protect accounts if traffic or credentials may have been exposed. From a device you believe is clean, change important passwords that may have passed through the router and enable multifactor authentication where available. Contact your ISP if you see altered service or account settings. A suspected router compromise does not, by itself, establish that every connected device is infected.

Restore the router or replace it?

Base the choice on whether the device can be brought back to a supported, controllable state—not on the mere fact that it behaved oddly.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Decision factor Restoring may be reasonable when… Replacement is safer when…
Security support The manufacturer or ISP confirms the exact model still receives security updates. The device no longer receives security support or cannot be updated. CISA recommends replacing equipment that has reached end of security support in its Internet Exposure Reduction Guidance.
Recovery path The ISP or manufacturer provides clear instructions for resetting and recovering this model. No reliable recovery procedure is available or support cannot establish a safe path forward.
Suspicious activity Unexpected logins and configuration changes can be explained or removed through the recommended recovery process. Unrecognized management access or changes remain unexplained after following support guidance.
Exposure controls You can disable unneeded remote management and services and maintain secure settings. The router cannot be configured to reduce exposure in ways the ISP or manufacturer advises.

If replacement is needed, choose a security-supported home Wi-Fi router and confirm compatibility with your ISP. Buying a new router is not a universal infection cure; secure its settings and update its firmware during setup.
